True but despite getting two there' date=' I think the Sox let an incredibly wild Phil Hughes off the hook in the second inning. A lot of balls left up in the zone.[/quote']

Unfortunately, not only do I agree, but you last sentence applies to more than just this start. I've been saying on this site for awhile that I don't think Hughes has good fastball command, leaving it up in the zone more often that not (and even doing it when he's successful). Beltre's AB from the first inning is a perfect example.

do you think it's mental or physical? at first i thought he was fatigued but looking at his stats, he started pitching like this less than 50 innings into the season

i think he's a much more talented pitcher than this

In my opinion, this is how he has been the entire year, and even last year out of the pen. His fastball just has so much late life, that, at times, he's able to get away with it. I just don't think he has great fastball command. If he corrects that, and improves his change-up, he has a chance to be a fantastic starting pitcher - but I'm getting way ahead of myself.

Anyway, I've got to run. Enjoy the rest of the game guys.

i wouldn't dump on hughes too much. he's still only 24 and he has shown an ability to pitch much better than this. as bad as he's been, his era is only 4.01. remember, buchholz had a 4.21 era, 1.38 whip last year at the same age that hughes is now

Ells gets the benefit of the doubt. Way too small of a sample size' date=' and he's been contributing with good defense.[/quote']

ellsbury could be hitting .400 since his return from the dl and it would still be a disappointing year for him given all the time he's missed. i am really liking the improved defense however

I think that the media should make a huge deal out of every one of A-rod's HR's. Granted, it'll be annoying to watch TV with constant A-rod coverage, but that means he'll go weeks in between HR's.

ells is way too anxious. he's jumping out at every pitch. he needs to relax' date=' let the ball come to him and take some pitches[/quote']

He's doing what he's done since his first full season.
