what are our chances of making the playoffs if buchholz continues to have an era in the mid 2's, lester has an era around 3, beckett continues to be dominant and matsuzaka continues to go 6+ innings a start with an era under 4?

If Pedroia comes back raking and the rest of the team stays healthy, I think we have a real shot. However, we will need the pitching to be perfect and odds are that at least one of those guys (and lackey) regress a bit. Also, the bullpen might be what does us in. Paps needs to regain his form and everyone else needs to step it up.

john lackey may have the worst overall stats of any of our starters but he's pitched much better lately (3.25 era, 1.23 whip since the asb) and has a history of being better in the second half. i didn't mention him because it's unlikely that we have 5 starters all pitching really well at the same time but if one of our starters regresses, lackey may be able to pick up some of the slack

Why aren't you bring up the pen?

Why aren't you bring up the pen?

because it hasn't changed at all. it's still the same pen with poor middle relief and a good 8th/9th inning combo that it's been all year, so what's to discuss about it?

i bring up the rotation because it's improved dramatically. beckett is back and pitching like beckett, daisuke and lackey are pitching much better and wakefield with his 5.50+ era is no longer starting for us every 5 games

I have a feeling Okajima has pitched his last game in Boston. I feel a DFA coming tomorrow.

Dice has been really good here of late. His last 5 starts:

8/5 vs Cleveland: 8 IP, 5 H, ER, 6 K

7/31 vs Detroit: 6 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 5 K

7/25 @ Seattle: 6 IP, 4 H, ER, 4 K

7/19 @ Oakland: 6 2/3 IP, 2 H, ER, 6 K

7/11 @ Toronto: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 5 K

I'll take that any day of the week.

Well' date=' when talking about playoff chances you might want to bring up their s***** bullpen.[/quote']

if our pitchers continue going 7-8 innings every time out, we can get by with s***** middle relief

Right now, between Lackey, Lester and Buch, they're averaging close to 6.5 innings per game. Beckett and Dice-k both have the potential to get it up there too.

Your starters will not got 7-8 innings every night

i didn't mean it literally. buchholz, lester, beckett and lackey all have the potential to go 7-8 innings and throw 115 pitches every time out, even daisuke is going more than 6 innings a start. the sox starters have been getting pretty deep into games, we haven't been seeing much of our middle relief outside of blowouts
