The deal is done and Berkman has approved it, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The Yankees have to wait 24 hours before the deal is officially complete because of Berkman's ten and five rights.

Got it from MLBTR and they have all Twitter links at the moment.

The Astros are picking up a lot of the money owed to Berkman and won't obtain top prospects in return, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney. The Yankees expect to make one or two more moves and continue working on trades

So the Astros are footing the bill and not getting anyone of note back? Ed Wade is the worst GM ever...

This is a magnificent deal for NY. Berkman will probably slot into the #2 spot in the lineup. He missed a good chunk of April with injury, then struggled for a month, had a good OBP month but no power in June, and now is having a solid power month in July. He's got a .372OBP right now and will be moving to one of the best offenses in the game as well as one of the best parks for lefties in the game. There is a very good chance that Lance breaks his doldrums and comes back as a .900OPS hitter for the Yanks. Right now, the lineup should look like...

1. Jeter SS

2. Berkman DH

3. Teixeira 1B

4. Rodriguez 3B

5. Cano 2B

6. Swisher RF

7. Granderson CF

8. Posada C

9. Gardner LF

That is a hell of a lineup, especially with Granderson showing signs of life

Swisher is mashing in the 2 hole.... He's always put up good numbers there too.

I think this is a good deal for the Astros.

They lose a quality player but they get nothing in return, so there's no added burden of having to wait around to become competitive again. Now they can lower expectations all around and not give anyone false hope that they might be good sometime soon.

I hope it doesn't hurt too much to remove the gigantic baseball bat that Hank Steinbrenner shoved into their anus.

And it wasn't even a complete salary dump, as the Astros are picking up more than half of the remaining money that Berkman is due this year. Great deal by the Yankees.

I was just going to ask what handicapped player the Astros received in return, but it appears they aren't even getting that for Berkman. What a quality front office they have in Houston. It really boggles the mind how people that high up can be so incompetent.

The rumor is Kevin Russo and Jimmy Paredes. Russo, IMO, needed a change of location. His bat should carry in the NL and he will probably profile as a minus defender at SS or an avg defender at 2b with a league average bat or better at the position.

Paredes is the wild card. He's 21 in A ball, but he has a ton of speed (30+SB already) and a lot of potential. He's a 5 tool SS prospect who could make this deal look bad in a few yrs. Or he could completely flame out and make this one of the better deals at the deadline.

Regardless, Paredes is somewhere in the 25-30 range in the prospect rankings and Russo is in the 30-40 range. Not bad

Actually, it is Mark Melancon and Jimmy Paredes.

Sad to see Melancon go, as I think he will flourish in Houston. He's got all the stuff to be a closer in the game, but he just looked like a deer in headlights when he came to NY. Expect him to be a solid setup man to start in Houston and move to the closers role.

Paredes is as stated above, a guy with a ton of potential, but a long way to go

I wouldn't want Berkman clogging the bases in the #2 spot. I have read his right knee still isn't 100%. So he's not exactly light of foot.

All in all it's good pick up for the Yankees. Glad to see they sent something back. My mind was blown when I read the Astros weren't getting anything back lol.

He's not fast, but he isnt Teixiera slow.

I honestly think our best lineup has Gardner leading off with Jeter hitting second, but Girardi has been reluctant to do that. Gardner leads the majors in P/PA by 0.17 over Ortiz, is 7th in the majors in OBP at .399, and is 6th in SBs with 30. He's a prototypical leadoff hitter

Yes and you definately don't want those to back to back then. Or is someone else hitting 3rd?

Ya I tend to agree with you there. Gardner should be the lead off hitter. But I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it.

But it is broke, Jeter is getting 23 mil to A) leadoff with an OBP of .337 and B) not steal bases anymore. Gardner would represent a significant upgrade.

Well yes that's what makes me say it should be changed. But they're winning games and are in 1st place. So technically, it ain't broke ;)
