RHP Dan Haren traded to Angels for LHP Joe Saunders, LHP Patrick Corbin, and RHP Rafael Rodriguez

Just reported on MLB Network.

You were still one in the first place?

I was kind of on the fence. He's done some good things, and some bad things. But hanging onto Joba Chamberlain, when you have the chance to acquire Dan Haren (who is signed through 2013 with a below market value contract) is pretty much a fireable offense.

In his defense, we don't know what the actual pieces of the deal the Diamondbacks wanted, all we got were rumors.

Every single rumor, from many different sources, said pretty much the same thing. I'm wiling to bet it's accurate.

If it weren't for his trading ability (because his drafting abilities are well...you know) he'd probably have been fired years ago. I think that good trades is all that you have to count on from him.

I'd be careful with that. The desire to be in on breaking news will have multiple outlets parrotting a single leak/source.

Pathetic haul for Haren.

Agreed. I wouldn't have made the deal unless Mike Trout had been included.

I still like the Rangers in that division, but this will close the gap some.

What were those rumors? Joba and?

I'm no longer a Brian Cashman supporter.

Having the best record in baseball and coming off a World Series victory isn't good enough?

Perhaps they should just increase the payroll to 400 mill and have an All Star player at every position

The package does seem a bit light at first glance. But if you consider a couple things it doesn't look too bad.

1. Saunders ERA in the AL over the past 2 years is 4.00. Harens is 3.23 in the NL. I think it's fair to reason that Saunders may very well benefit from the change of AL to NL like a lot of pitchers have done in the past. So a mid to upper 3 ERA isn't far fetched. And that would be extremely valuable to a young and rebuilding AZ team. Not to mention the possibility of flipping him for more prospects if he has success there.

2. Saunders makes 3.7M this season an is Arb eligible for 2 more years. Which even if he pitches well probably won't come close to what they had remaining for Harens deal. Add in a couple decent cost controlled prospects and it's not bad deal. Just not the one everyone was expecting.

Also I was reading more on the deal and there is a PTBNL. That typically means one of this years draft picks who can't be traded yet. From the GM's comments it appears to be another LHP. Did the Angels draft any highly talented LHP in the draft this year?

The names involved in the deal on a prospect level, particularly Corbin, and the player to be named, give us extreme prospect depth, at a position, left-handed pitcher, that anybody would covet

Right, because that's exactly what I wanted...

According to reports, they were willing to take on Dan Haren's contract, so apparently that wasn't the hold up. However, they weren't willing to part with Joba for Haren, which is what I'm upset over.

Saunders' ERA this year is 4.6, last year was 4.6, the previous year 3.4 (that year backed up by low BABIP). His 3.4 year was the only year where he's had an ERA under 4.44. The Dbacks got fleeced - they have a very good team brought down by a triple A bullpen. They went from "very close to contending" to "rebuilding around Brandon Webb".

The press conference was all about how Saunders was a winner and the number of games he won for the Angels the past two seasons. I'm starting to think that firing Josh Byrnes was actually the worst move of the year for the Dbacks.

the NYpost is telling a different story why it didn't go through

The Yankees and Diamondbacks talked, but the Yankees balked at paying the entire $31.75 million remaining on Haren's contract that is guaranteed through 2012. And they also were against including pitching prospect Ivan Nova.

Plus, the Yankees will need plenty of money to ink free agent Cliff Lee this winter and don't want to have Haren's money negate the savings of losing Javier Vazquez and his $11.5 million

If this is indeed the case then I guess I can't blame them. I had just read that they were willing to take on his entire contract. Who knows.
