Dice K vs Hammel

By Doug Miller / MLB.com

Daisuke Matsuzaka is ready to go after spending time on the disabled list, but he's heading into a serious challenge at Coors Field, where the Colorado Rockies are starting to put it all together.

Matsuzaka has been out since June 12, when he was scratched from a start after he strained his right forearm warming up prior to a game against the Phillies. If Matsuzaka can lean on anything to comfort him in the not-so-friendly Mile High confines, it's the fact that he beat the Rockies in Game 3 of the 2007 World Series in this ballpark, giving up two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings, and also chipped in with a two-run single.

"He's set to pitch," Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell said. "The biggest thing Dice-K has done is he's used his fastball very well and has attacked the strike zone. He's not pitched away from contact as much as we've seen in the past.

"He has used his breaking ball and changeup and been fine with that at times, but what has allowed him to get deep in the game is to pitch ahead in the count and attack the strike zone."

The Rockies, meanwhile, are five games over .500 for the first time all season, and their comeback win over the Red Sox on Wednesday night, capped by Jason Giambi's walk-off home run off Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon, means they'll have a chance to sweep the Red Sox, who swept them out of that 2007 World Series.

They've been doing it with their pitching and defense most of the time, they did it with their late bats Wednesday, and they're seemingly always doing it with flair for the dramatic.

"That's our season so far in a nutshell," infielder Cilnt Barmes said. "That's the way it's been dang near every night. You want to watch an exciting game? Come watch a Rockies game. We're able to find ways to win."

Red Sox: Beckett rehab schedule set

Staff ace Josh Beckett threw a 55-pitch side session Wednesday and will pitch a simulated game Saturday in San Francisco. He'll then face hitters in another simulated game next Thursday at Fenway Park, and if all goes well, he'll begin a Minor League rehab assignment on July 6. "Today felt good," Beckett said. "Things are getting back to normal. Today was much more normal. Go out and play catch, get on the mound and throw a side." ... Matsuzaka is 6-4 in Interleague Play with a 4.01 ERA. He has never faced the Rockies in the regular season.

Rockies: Hammel on a serious roll

In his past seven games since returning from injury, Thursday starter Jason Hammel has gone 5-1 with a 2.04 ERA. Last June, Hammel went 4-0 with a 3.41 ERA, and this June, he's 3-0 with a 0.31 ERA in the month. Most notably, Hammel hasn't given up a run in his past 25 1/3 innings. ... Second baseman Jonathan Herrera has a five-game hitting streak after a single in the third inning on Wednesday.

Worth noting

Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava has reached base safely in 10 consecutive games, the longest such streak by a Red Sox player to begin his Major League career since Kevin Youkilis hit in 10 straight from May 15-28, 2004. ... Colorado reliever Joe Beimel has a 0.76 ERA in 31 appearances. He has allowed 15 hits and two runs in 23 2/3 innings. "I made sure I got into really good shape this offseason, and I've just been kind of keeping my focus on every single pitch, every batter," Beimel said. "I think that's been the big difference."

From the Globe:

Game time: 8:40 p.m.

TV/Radio: NESN/WEEI.

State of the Sox: The losses in the first two games of the series have dropped the Red Sox 2.5 games behind the Yankees, who are idle today. This is the third game of a six-game road trip. The team leaves for San Francisco after the game.

Stop the skid: The Sox have not lost three straight since May 15-17 against the Tigers and Yankees.

Another roll of the Dice: This will be the first start for Matsuzaka since he went on the disabled list without an injury. Matsuzaka felt stiff warming up on June 12 and was immediately put on the DL retroactive to June 8.

Turns out he was fine and has been throwing since. Matsuzaka has been solid in his last four starts. going 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA. He will be facing the Rockies for the first time since Game 3 of the 2007 World Series at Coors Field. He allowed two runs on three hits over 5.2 innings in that game and contributed a two-run single in the third inning.

Familiar foe: Hammel is 0-2 with a 5.50 ERA in eight career appearances against the Red Sox while pitching for the Rays from 2006-08. Here's how the Sox have fared against him:

Scutaro 1-2

Pedroia 1-2

Ortiz 5-8

Youkilis 1-6

Martinez 0-4

Beltre 1-6

Cameron 2-7

McDonald 1-3

Good control: Sox pitchers have one walk in their last 22.1 innings.

Good sticks, too: Sox pitchers have had 14 plate appearances in five interleague road games. They are 3 for 10 with four sacrifices. So half the time they have done something positive. That's pretty good for AL pitchers.

Williams, Yaz, Rice and Nava: The rookie with the great backstory is 13 of 34 since he arrived with eight extra-base hits and 10 RBI in 10 games. He also has scored six runs. The Sox are 7-3 in the Nava Era.

Double their pleasure: The Sox have at least one double in the last 12 games with a total of 34 over those dozen games. Through games played Wednesday, they have 178 doubles, 23 more than any other team.

Plenty of production: The Sox lead the majors in runs scored (397) and OPS (.819). They're on a pace to score 881 runs, which would be nine more than last season.

Jason Bay, by the way, hit two homers off CC Sabathia on May 23. He has hit one since and has four on the season. Red Sox with four or more home runs include Marco Scutaro, Darnell McDonald and Bill Hall.

Hot hurlers: Ramon Ramirez has allowed one run in his last 6.2 innings and struck out six. ... Manny Delcarmen has thrown 5.1 scoreless innings in his last six appearances and struck out seven.

Looking to connect: David Ortiz is hitless in his last 11 at-bats with five strikeouts.

That's it from me today. Nick Cafardo is in Denver with the team and will have your updates the rest of the way. I'm headed to San Francisco tonight.

Enjoy the game.

Calling a Japanese player "Sushi Boy".... wow, original.

Are we gonna call the Caribbean players "Plaintain boy" too

You seem to have a problem with sarcasm.

It's not as if I called him the "fat, over-paid, under performing, Nip Mother f***er".

Which he is.

Get over it.

And, once again, I will say that I have never heard anyone, anywhere, refer to him as Sushi-Boy. So, to me, it is original.

Look at the last 20 game threads. This is more than usual at this time in the game.

Really?

Look at the game threads from June of 2009 and reconsider.
