This guy has been amazing, I figured he's hgit 25 or so home runs, but at best a .300 average. Glad he's on my fantasy team in two of my three leagues!

The man shouldn't be touched with a ten-foot pole in the offseason. Most people don't believe in it but i do: Dude's in contract mode.

Didn't I say these exact words in another thread? :D Do we actually agree on something? :harhar:

Any chance he re-signs or is he 1 and done? Sox FO is so f***ing cheap (**gasp** OH NO LUXARY TAX **gasp**at this point, if he wants anything more than 3M a year hes gone.

Would love to see him back though. Looks like he really enjoys playing the game.

And you'd probably not get him. Remember, he's making $10 mil this yr, so that deal would be a pay cut. And currently his numbers are very solid. My guess is that some team thinks he's their long term solution in the #3 or #4 spot and pays him for 4 yrs at a 12-15 mil a yr rate

Beltre is hard to figure out. My gut is saying he is in contract mode. But the Red Sox fan in me wants to believe he would play like this every year he's in Boston. In the end I think it's just too risky financially to try and bring him back at 4/12-15M per. I think they should offer arb, hope to get picks or at worst Beltre back on a one year deal. Other then that look to the off season FA/Trade market to bring in a impact 1B/3B.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that they offer arb and he declines. He'll get multiple years out of what he's doing this year.

So you believe he is one and done as well? It's really not a shocker though. It's pretty much the exact situation Boras was hoping for with his pillow contract.

But the question is, would paying Beltre 4/40 be a bad idea if he plays gold glove defense, hitting .280 and 20+ HR a year? Those were the numbers we were initially expecting from him, and the team paid him 10 million for them. Even if he regresses that much from this year, those would still be very respectable numbers at 3rd. If they can't get Agon/Fielder/Dunn, or a good deal on VMart to move to 1st, Beltre may be one of the better options for this team.

Sizeable if. The only thing consistent about Beltre is his inconsistency, and I am very wary about giving a multiyear deal to players who only perform in a contract year.

Honestly I'd take the picks and look to add a corner IF to our shopping list in the offseason. next year we're going to be putting the team back together in a pretty serious way anyhow, making a long-term commitment to an over-30 CIF while we're not sure we'll be truly ready to be a top-level contender in the next couple years is questionable.

Worth consideriong: If we let all of Ortiz, V-Mart and Beltre walk this offseason, all of them are quite probably type A free agents. So if we're reloading, which we probably ought to, we might be looking at a quasi-rebuild and swallow a couple truly bad years before we're really ready to dominate again. I don't think we need to prepare to tank or anything, but looking rationally at the next few years, outside Youkilis I'm not sure where our major production is coming from and that makes me think it's time to step back, at least until we have a better idea what we're getting from possible future producers like Kalish, Anderson, Rizzo, Reddick, etc and get our catching situation sorted out at least to a point.

He hit .265ish with 25 home runs a year in seattle. I think .280 with 20+ here is sustainable, and his defense will likely be better than his error filled season so far. Understand how sizeable a drop in production that prediction is, and also consider the possibility of an upside.

Considering the majority of the great corner infielders are on contenders right now, I don't see a trade working out, except for maybe Fielder, but I think between the hit to the defense on both corners, and his big contract expectations and health liabilities, I actually feel safer saving the prospects and keeping Beltre.

Ortiz and VMart both want to stay here. I seriously doubt the team offers Ortiz arbitration because he will probably take it. I doubt any other team will pay him 12+ million, especially considering they'll need to lose a first round pick to get him. Their offense simply can't afford to lose all three of them, and VMart may actually be an interesting idea to start at 1st for the Sox next season.

I'm sure you're aware of how much money is coming off the books, but between Lugo/Lowell/Ortiz/Vmart/Beltre, that's 50 million dollars. A lot of the younger players have raises coming, but considering that their rotation is set, 50 million goes a long way towards the offense and bullpen. I also don't think it makes any sense to reload when the team has such a great core of young players-- Lester/Pedroia/Youk/Pap/Bard/Buch/Ells that will be expecting much larger contracts when they hit the open market.

It really depends on how long the Red Sox think Martinez can remain at catcher. If he can stay there for the next 3-4 years then the Red Sox have the flexibility to resign Martinez and then keep Youk at 1B and resign Beltre or move Youk to 3B and acquire a franchise hitter like Fielder or Gonzalez to man 1B. Also I can't see any team offering Ortiz big money, so probably a 2/20 deal should be enough like Dunn got a couple years ago.
