I'd also like for someone to explain to me how signing the guy was a mistake. He's been productive on both sides of the ball during his contract.

Let me try this approach:

Player A:

Average yearly stats: .275 /.331/.473 .803 OPS

5-year, $90 million contract.

Player B:

Average yearly stats: .257/.332/.405 .737 OPS

5-year, $50 million contract.

Player C: .283/.391/.502 .893 OPS

5-year, $70 million contract.

Of those three, given production, who looks less "Overpaid"?

Posted this in the other thread, but i'll also add the following:

Top-15 paid OF in baseball:

1. Manny Ramirez, $22,500,000 (2009-10)

2. Torii Hunter, $18,000,000 (2008-12)

3. Ichiro Suzuki, $18,000,000 (2008-12)

4.Vernon Wells, $18,00,000 (2008-13)

5. Matt Holliday, $17,142,857 (2010-16)

6. Carlos Beltran, $17,000,000 (2005-11)

7.Alfonso Soriano, $17,000,000 (2007-14)

8. Carlos Lee, $16,666,667 (2007-12)

9. Jason Bay, $16,500,000 (2010-13)

10. Magglio Ordonez, $15,000,000 (2005-09)

11. J.D. Drew, $14,000,000 (2007-11)

12. Kosuke Fukudome, $12,000,000 (2008-11)

13. Jose Guillen, $12,000,000 (2008-10)

14.Aaron Rowand, $12,000,000 (2008-12)

15. Nick Markakis, $11,016,667 (2009-14)

Now here you see some overpaid players.

By the way, this is a Red Sox discussion board, if people aren't calling names, or disrespecting each other, we should be allowed to discuss players at will .

I like JD so far, no gripes. There are other players on the REDSOX that I would like to see let go.

huge eyeroll.

He's just a freakin' player. He's not worth being canonized or burned at the stake. The obsession with him is freakish.

Yup.

Where's the middle ground
The middle ground would be .... "I don't like Drew as a player, but I am glad he is on the Sox."? That would be a good way of identifying the psychotics on the board, but I already know who they are.

Are you one of them?

C- He's ok. Not worth his salary and a little bit fragile. He's also a baseball player. To judge people based on their opinion of a baseball player is pointless.

... and neither are you.

Hey, i just like baseball arguments. If i'm not insulting anyone, i don't see what the big deal about having an argument is.

Oh no, i was just clarifying.

I find the Drew subject particulary intriguing for a number of reasons. Not only because i like what he brings to the table, but because it completely eludes me how someone can be loudly criticized for playing the game the right way. No antics, no bitching, no media tantrums, just shut up, put your head down, and play the game!

Similar situation with Beltre, he's an all-out guy who has his flaws, but brings a lot to the table, and even though he's in many aspects superior to Lowell, people like Lowell and not him, so he automatically sucks.

He is a baseball player. How could we judge him as anything else? Maybe he is a great person, dad and husband, but how would we know? We see him play baseball. We can judge how he plays. You've made one thing clear for me. I can remove you from my "Maybe Psychotic" list.

Good baseball player. But the contract was bad at the time, because they signed a 32 year old corner OF to a 70/5 deal after averaging just 118 per season on his entire career. Turned out to be a decent deal for the Sox, considering his previous injury history.

There's the caveat of "current market value" at the time of the contract.

Gary Matthews Jr and Juan Pierre got obnoxious contracts, that off-season the going rate for OF's went ape-s***.

I don't try to understand those people or change their minds. How did people boo Williams and Yaz. Such people are a loud minority that give the impression that their opinion is more widespread. Their opinion is usually based on emotion rather than any facts, but that's okay, because being a fan is an emotional thing.

Hey, if people make a statistically incorrect argument, it's no disrespect to correct them, and it's not trying to change their minds either, but trying to bring the facts to light.
