This!

It's time to start comparing Drew to Jesus. The thing you dislike most about the two of them is their over zealous fans.

In all fairness, you're being just as forceful, and contesting just as intensely, your opinion, as the people that you're bashing. Its not just the supporters, its the haters, and ones who think he's overpaid, as well. Only way to end it is for both sides to stop. Its silly and old.

I've always liked Drew's swing. Sort of off topic, but I believe he is the only D-I player to ever have a 30-30 season.

He is a very good player. But coming out of college, people thought he would be better than very good. Maybe that was an unfair expectation, but there it is. A bit of an underachiever, given how talented he was.

I'm not kidding. My roommate from this past year hates him. Every time he strikes out brings a comment about how awful he is and how he's his least favorite/most hated player on the team. Yes, the word "hate" is used. So do a lot of my other friends who are casual Red Sox fans and attend a few games a year. I don't agree with them (I've obviously been one of his biggest supporters on this board for the past few years).

People who actually join a message board to discuss the team, I would assert, are much more involved with the logic behind the game due to their commitment to and interest in it. People who passively watch, like many people I know, strongly dislike Drew because he isn't the flashy, big-play figure they expected when a lucrative deal was handed to him. I don't agree with them, but it would be a mistake to think that there isn't a large body of individuals who genuinely dislike the guy; it's a lot more than "neutrality".

So, of course a poll on a message board (full of more reasonable fans, in general) is going to illicit responses which are more representative of those who actually bother to look into why they should appreciate Drew. Asking a bunch of people who thoroughly do their homework on this board will skew the responses to at the very least a neutral appreciation, if not a supportive stance, behind the guy. The large body of people who do not join message boards and just watch the games and don't do their own research, in my opinion, are the ones who dislike Drew. Unfortunately, there are plenty of those types of people out there, and thus that sentiment is not uncommon. Asking this question on Talksox is like asking a bunch of lactose-intolerant people if they dislike milk and taking the responses to generally represent the entire body of people. Most of the people on this board at the very least don't mind Drew because they're more involved with his trends, past successes and statistics and what is reasonable to expect of someone like him. The large body of people who do not do said research and line up his production against his contract, resulting in a vast under-appreciation and sometimes, yes, hate, is not represented in this sample.

Why are you so awesome?

On a side note, as i said before, the point is not to correct other people's opinions, but to correct statistically flawed arguments.

I remember an argument with a poster who said that "The guy doesn't even produce the .900 OPS that was expected of him" to which another poster responded "That he had a .900 OPS in both 2008 and 2009" the response: "Quietest .900 OPS season i've ever seen", which brought the lulz, but it's about the core of the issue. If you're going to bash the guy, bash him with the truth.

But that's just a lazy mistake that comes from not actually checking their statistics, most of the time people use FanGraphs value stats to prove to someone else that he's worth his contract, and that's what I'm sick of seeing. If its over a stat, then you can just show them their mistake and move on. Don't have to keep arguing over a stat they were too lazy to research. Debate something else, really. Its really repetitive and boring after seeing it pop up here every day for the past 8 months or so.

Not the past eight months, but long before either of us were here, but then the following happens:

You show them the stat, say, OPS, UZR, or whatever, and in comes the fabled: "Advanced metrics are useless".

What do you do then?

Not only laziness, but a complete disregard for statistical analysis, so what started as a Drew argument becomes a statistical validity argument. New guard Vs Old guard. Drew is just an example of table-setters for this type of arguments.

Well I was done posting on this thread because it's boring but now that I know it annoys EMMZ, who annoys me, I'm going to post on this thread for perpetuity.

Hating Drew may be a generational thing, in the real world most of the people I talk to are roughly my age and they all call him Nancy, they all are "real" fans, they all have been fans for decades, they all understand the game as well as anyone on here and they all think posting on a message board is a foolish waste of time (and they're right but I like it anyway).

BTW... I don't hate Nancy, I think he's overpaid and I get sick of his mystery one game ailments but I do seriously dislike his worshippers that won't allow a discouraging word. Seriously, accept that not everyone is going to like/love the guy. It's not hurting him and it doesn't hurt you. Over the years there have been many Sox players that I didn't like but because they wear a cap with a B on it - I won't boo. There are several Sox players right now I don't "like" because of their poor sportsmanship or just how they play the game - but I hope they have a great game every game.

If I didn't boo Carl Everett, I'll never boo a man in a Sox uniform.

 I didn't boo the Gerbil but I wish I had.

I think that's just message board foolishness. On the other 2 boards I post on you have the same over reaction to every critical comment. One poster, that's a great poster, made a rough comment about Papelbon's fist pump (and just being overly demonstrative on the mound) being unprofessional and unsportsmanlike and if Pap's played for another team he'd loathe him for his attitude. I don't entirely disagree with the poster but that one comment opened up a shitstorm of Biblical proportions. -- oh! and this comment was made two years ago before there were any noticeable chinks in the Papelbon armor.

And then the day someone made a comment about Pedroia's ego.. Ay Karamba.

I love the guy as a player.

Fixed it for you :D;)?

a700 really if you would just not look at the $ amounts and focus on the year of contracts, I truly think you would enjoy the game more. And that's not just you. I say that to all sports fans of every sport in general. Worrying or caring about how much a players earns is futile IMO. The only thing you can do is not watch or spend any money on the team. And let's face it, who really going to do that? All you have to worry about is the Sox got Drew at a decent amount of years during a decent proportion of his "prime" years.

In august of 2004 I got a new boss at work. She was new to the Company and was hired as the Company's top HR/Employment lawyer. She was born and raised in the Bronx and she was a big Yankee fan. In the first meeting with her direct reports, she found out that I was a crazy Sox fan. She reminded me that she was a Yankee fan. She asked how I felt about what Pedro had done to poor Don Zimmer. I told her that I normally am opposed to elder abuse, but that Zimmer had had that beating coming for 25 years since 1978 when he stubbornly relegated Bill Lee to the bullpen and cost us the Division Championship. She laughed and said, why don't you tell me how you really feel. We got along great from that day on.:D

I don't worry about what they make. I leave that to the Internet GMs. I just want the best players that the FO can get for us. I usually get a lot of criticism for not acknowledging the economics of building a roster. I only mentioned Drew's contract, because it has been an issue on this board-- an issue that I feel is distinct from the issue of his ability as a player. He is unquestionably a very good player IMO, but there is room to debate the contract. The contract debate doesn't excite me. I go year to year. I would like Bay on our team this season even though the FO feels that his knees will not hold up for 4 seasons. If he plays fine for 4 seasons without knee problems, I will call them out for being either disingenuous or having an incompetent medical staff or both.

He's an above average player who happens to be well overpaid. There are plenty of them out there.

But since his supporters go so overboard about defending his value, it's fun to tweak them.:lol::lol:

And for pinch hitter Bob Beetles Bailey for Jack Brohammer.

Yes, that too. He played Bailey, because he had a bigger pot belly than Zim at the time.

God, its an endless battle that's more about who's got the bigger e-peeder than the other guy, than about JD Drew.

Guy 1: JD Drew gets no ribbies and I watch moar games than you!

Guy 2: JD Drew, aside from his stellar OPS, is the cure for cancer, is what Willis was talkin bout, gets paid by Apple 99 cents every time he downloads a song, died 20 years ago, but death's too afraid to tell him, and that's not all. He died on the cross for you.

Didn't say you hated him, said that the Drew stuff is just old. I'm indifferent, but wish we could progress. Anyways, all that aside, just more reason to call you an immature old hypocrite. You want the other side to hush up, but you refuse to not egg them on. Act like you're 46, and not 16.

Oh lord you're an odd kid. Since you offer nothing to the board I should put you on ignore but since you make my 10 year old niece seem, reasonable, mature, educated and serene by comparison - I'll keep you around. It's going to be a banner birthday and Christmas for my niece, she's never been so appreciated.

oh and Emmz... nothing in that post of mine you quoted was in response to anything you said except the very first paragraph with the dig to you... I was just annoying the annoying. :D

EMMZ, I never read your posts unless you're quoting me. You seek me out to insult and I've had enough. I'm putting you on ignore because you've never had anything of value to say and I don't expect that to ever change.

And anytime someone insists that it's only guys that get into contests just for the sake of it, we have one of these catfights to set us straight.

Good show, ladies. Show us all how it's done.

I guess the fact that I put her on ignore (something you males seem incapable of doing) so it won't happen again, escaped you. Hmmm?

And a700 - you really should keep your mouth shut when it comes to disrupting the board with petty bickering.
