A manager is supposed to make decisions that gives his team the best chance at winning. Leaving Becket in the game when he's up to 100 pitches and is COMPLETELY wild is NOT a move that gives the team it's best chance to win. He loaded the bases' date=' walked a guy and then hit a guy to bring in 2 runs. What more do you need to see to pull him? He should have been gone before he even loaded the bases.[/quote']

Beckett is going to be incredibly fustrating to watch for the next 4 years. Because of what Beckett has had the reputation of, a supposed ace pitcher (it's getting funny even typing that anymore). Sure some nights, even several, he'll be "elite". But.... There will be too many times when he doesn't pitch to his ability, particularly against the Yankees. But he thanks you for taking the spotlight away from him and blaming his manager.

You know you're not living up to your hype, when fans have to debate 3 or 4 times (and it's only early May), whether your manager should have taken you out after you gave up your first 5 runs or 7 runs. *BECKETT IS TO BLAME, newsflash.*

Beckett will be the first one to say that he sucked, and he definitely doesn't care about what people say about him on message boards.

Like I thought in seriousness that he cares about TalkSox.

It was more of a sarcastic comment to the poster, who almost seems like he's on the payroll for Beckett, this poster's schtick is focusing too much on whether Francona has left him in too long.

Instead of Beckett's pitching.

And Beckett can keep saying he sucks. That's nice. I've heard Beckett say it too, since he simply doesn't produce enough anymore.

And Beckett can keep saying he sucks. He's had to say it a lot, it's disappointing what he has been far too many times.

Francona always leaves his starters in too long. He has a long man in the pen (wakefield), so there is no reason to wait for 7 or 8 runs.

I don't defend Beckett. Beckett isn't getting paid to make decisions. He's been awful, no doubt about it. However, Tito has a history of leaving Beckett in WAY to late and allows the game to completely slip away. I'm not making excuses for Beckett, in fact, I'm saying that he was sucking so bad he needed to get out of the game ASAP, but that is a decision that Tito needs to make, not Beckett.

Tito allowed Beckett to continue blowing up instead of pulling him when he started falling apart. Beckett hasn't earned the right to work through his struggles late in games yet this year. When it's May and Beckett has an ERA north of 7, his atrocity goes without saying.

He had a pretty good year last season-- worthy of being called an ace. He has 5 inconsistent weeks and you say that he doesn't do enough anymore? I don't get it

Dipre, I'm curious about the tab on your browser that says "Anti-horsefaced Douch..." Care to explain? Liven up a dreary gamethread?

It's "Anti-Horsefaced Douche Squad" AKA my ESPN fantasy team.

4 games in and he is now approaching ace-like status? LOLOLOL! Typical nonsensical, blowhard, Yankee trash.

Hughes is going to get lit-up.. He is not close to an ace.. He has pitched well against the dregs of the AL.. He won't last 7 tonight.. I expect him to get run before the 6th inning. Clay has much better stuff than Hughes and it will show this weekend.

Hughes has pitched against these PITIFUL offenses...Using runs-scored as the metric... These are the MLB rankings for the teams Baby Hughzey has faced

White Sox #24

Baltimore #27

OAK #17

LAA #23

**Not one team in the top-half in runs scored.

Clay has pitched against....

TAM #1 (5 IP 0 ER, 7 K's)

TOR #9 (8 IP, 1 ER)

TEX #12 (6.2 IP, 3 ER, 10 K's)

KC #19

LAA #23

The reason I brought this up is because a Yankee fan was trying to tell me how much better Hughes was than Buchholz and he was citing Hughes's superior ERA and WHIP. This is due in large part to the teams he has faced. The Yankees wanted to get his confidence up going into Fenway. Anybody who knows anything about baseball knows Clay Buchholz has better stuff than Hughes.. Not only does he throw harder, but his curve and change-up are so much better it is not even debateable. This myopic Yankee fan pretty much sums up most of the Yankee fanbase I have come in contact with....they are morons. They are similar to fans on here who cite Adrian Gonzalez's high .800 lifetime OPS as a reason he is not better than Ryan Howard--totally ignoring Park Factors.

This weekend I fully expect Clay to out-pitch Hughes...though they are not opposing each other. The Yankees and their fans will have no excuses.... Clay will be facing a much tougher lineup..and will succeed. Hughes will be facing 5 or 6 good hitters and get rocked.

Well looks like my run of good Mojo is over. Rats.
You had a good run but you like the Sox suck against the good teams. After tonight, we'll be 7 games behind the Yanks in the loss column and 8 behind the Rays, and they continue to fail to show any ability to beat the Yanks or Tampa.

I'll blame him today, but he has not lost all the games to the Yanks and the Rays. There's plenty of blame to go around, but the buck stops at Theo's desk.

The FO sucks, Theo sucks (he's to blame for injuries/early pitcher innefectiveness), Beltre sucs, the Sox suck.

The FO sucks' date=' Theo sucks (he's to blame for injuries/early pitcher innefectiveness), Beltre sucs, the Sox suck.[/quote']The only point that I was making is that tonight was Beckett's fault, but there is plenty to go around. If they can't start beating the Yanks or Tampa, it's going to be a tough season. So far they are 1-7 against those teams. There are still 30 games left against those teams, and that is where the season will be a success or failure. I am not optimistic that the Sox can handle either of those teams. I wish that I felt better about it, but the Yanks and Rays are better on paper, and thus far it has translated to the field as well.

... unfortunately the man at the desk gave out the big buck. For 4 more years to Joshua Beckett. Going to be fun. Mucho.

If he wins 15-17 game this season and pitches like he did last year, I'll wait until next year to start complaining.

So far, Hughes has faced LAA (.708 OPS), Oakland (.692 OPS), Baltimore (.700 OPS) and Chicago (.715 OPS). He'll be going from all below league average teams to the second best offensive team in the American League. That, coupled with the fact that he has a .162 BABIP doesn't bode well for him.

Tomorrow will be his first true test of the season.

Passed with flying colors

They don't lie if it's for the Yankees. Funny how that works.

I only got to see the first 4 innings and maybe he got better as the game went on but I saw him get outs on a lot of hard hit balls and get a lot of help from the umpires. Eventually those hits are going to start falling in - he can't keep up a BABIP of .162 the whole year.
