Fair enough. But any game Beckett pitches has a reasonable chance of coming out golden. And we get to see if Hughes is for real this year. That'd be enough interest to get me going to the park.

Plus the chance to hold up my homemade A-Rod is a Beastly Centaur sign.

Damn I hope that gets on TV.

Let it go man. People disagree with you.

And they are wrong, and you are one of them. Deal with it.

Last night's thread is locked, and there was some serious knuckle dragging going on that I'd like to respond to....

Re: Save percentage

It's funny that my point about Rivera and Hoffman is being brought up as "reaching" when 2 years ago it was used in Papelbon's defense when someone, I think it was ATG13, was trying to say Nathan was better than Papelbon because of....save percentage....and I argued the contrary point using the Rivera/Hoffman example. It's come full circle.

Anyway, suffice it to say that.....save percentage sucks. Since the Rivera/Hoffman point didn't sink in as well as it should have (Rivera is hands down better, period), let's take it to extremes. Save percentage sucks for a very specific reason, and it's this. You could, could mind you, literally be the worst pitcher in the league and have the best save percentage. Seriously. You could come into the game with a 3 run lead every time, give up 2 home runs every inning you pitch, strike out nobody, and then walk the bases loaded, get a ground out to home then a GIDP, and you'd have a perfect save percentage. Perfect. Your WHIP would be 5.00, ERA at 18.00, the FIP is a whopping 38.20, and you are perfect in the mind of some.

No thanks.

I realize that is an extreme, but if anyone can cite one other statistic that they esteem as worthy when it comes to player evaluation that can be so obscenely perverted, please let me know.

Since when has anyone formed an argument only from save percentage. I including save percentage in one of my posts and you run off the face of the Earth with it. You are the one hung up on it, no one else. Again, you are reaching to make an argument where there is none.

Did I quote you? Did I?

Quit assuming I'm talking about you and become informed about the debate. Two people responded about the relevance of save percentage after you explicitly stated that it wasn't the whole basis of your argument. Maybe that is who I'm responding to, E-Freud.

Well, it's a hypothetical situation since I'm in Africa, but it would be a pretty sweet sign, no?

Wow Dice-K has looked pretty good since the first-inning meltdown.

Yes he has. If he can hold it at 4 runs, the Sox have plenty of time to come back. Kazmir is already at 76 pitches.

Aside from that: @ Italll.- back n the states with Sox/Yanks tix? At Fenway?

Allow me to use my best Dominican here. "Jesus Christ."

There is no reason to lament your situation. You'll be in a world class city watching two of the best baseball teams playing in one of the best (run down and dumpy as it is) venues possible.

There is no reason to bitch about your immediate future.

We were only making a case that Papelbon is still excellent. The Save % argument has not come full circle either. Who remembers who was invloved in the Papelbon-Nathan debate. Finally, even in that debate, I doubt that anyone was arguing that Nathan was not excellent. Save % is not the be all and end all, but a steadily high percentage is a reliable indicator of excellence. WHIP is a good stat, but not the be all and end all either. Papelbon is an elite closer. Is he trending down? I don't think so, and even if he is trending down, he is managing to stay firmly excellent. In 10 years he'll probably suck, but I'll settle for 5 more years of excellence, and I think he has that left in him.

I've been in the States for a little bit now. I'm visiting friends and we have Sox/Yankees tickets for a friend's birthday. Hell, I made the same trip for my birthday 2 years ago for a game Sox/Yanks game at the old Yankee Stadium. And I wouldn't consider it bitching, I'm just defending myself against an onslaught and misguided assault. I'm just simply not confident that the Sox will win tomorrow, and I hate losing. I'm just being realistic.

Terry better get someone in the bullpen. With Dice-K's pitch count movin up, I'd expect him to implode real quick in the 6th...

Oh! Welcome back and enjoy the game!

By the way, there is some good beer to be had. :D

Jason Bay would have had it.
Any Red Sox LF should be familiar with how those balls come back to fair territory and they should catch them. Hermida botched one of those against the Rays. It shows me that they didn't do enough prep.
