It seems about right. But did they really need to extend him now? Pretty much guarantee's Werth hits the market IMO.

awfull deal ... WOW...

also , Pujols must be licking his chops now

I think Pujols will be getting 30 MIL a year

I think Pujols was getting 27-30M AAV regardless.

It seems like it works against the Phillies in every way. If they waited for him to go to free agency, he wouldn't have gone for all that much more (Tex, with his gold gloves went for 22 average), and they could have made sure he stayed healthy the next two years before making that decision. Considering he's lived in Philly for so long, and they've gone to the world series twice, they could have come up with a better contract than that.

Part of the reason that the AAV is so high (in all likelihood) is that the years aren't higher. If Howard got the same amount of years as Teixeira, his AAV likely would have been closer to 20M.

Second dubious move after trading Lee for Halliday instead of finding a way to have both.

And wreck their farm system while they're at it? It was smart to move Lee.

They essentially lost one good prospect in the deal and Lee, since they did pick up a pretty good pitching prospect to replace Drabek. And they arent complaining. Halladay might have an ERA around 1

You realize they traded Lee so they could replenish their farm system and make salary space so they could give Howard his extension

Probly the worst deal in the league now...

Meh' date=' that deal was signed like 4 years ago though.[/quote']

LOL! That and Wells is starting to play decent.

Who did Philly think they were gonna lose him to?

C'mon Jacko. There are plenty of teams that would be interested in Howard. Both NY teams. NYM would probably love to steal Howard from Philly. I'm sure they can find another position for Ike :D And I wouldn't put it past the Yankees to try and bring him in as a DH. The video game numbers that Howard would put up in Coors East would be hilarious. So don't think they wouldn't be tempted. I'm sure the Red Sox would have been sniffing around. LH power is hard to come by. If St. Louis for some reason had to replace Pujols, Howard would easily be #1 on their list. And that's just some from the annual contenders. You always have to worry about the GM who is desperate to save his job. You never know what kind of crazy ass deal they may have offered.

I think you get my point though. Philly would have had plenty of stiff competition.

They would have had competition, but at $25 million per yr? He's 30 and they had him controlled through 2011. He'd turn 32 prior to signing his FA contract and he is an absolute bear on the defensive side of the ball.

Tex is a switch hitter, was 2 yrs younger at the time of his contract and is an elite defender. And he got $23 mil per yr from the richest team in sports. Do they really think that, had the other teams gotten another chance, they'd surpass that number?

See there's my problem. I wasn't considering the two years before the new deal kicks in. I was thinking of the deal being a flat 5 year deal, but they are getting him for 7 more years instead. Taking that into consideration I can see why this deal isn't being received with open arms.

Jackson the problem with that is Howard isn't a bear defensively anymore, and he's put up near Ruthian numbers since his call up, averaging 49 HRs and 143 RBI. They did a great comparison between Howard and Pujols on BBTN last night. Bobby Cox was quoted to saying if Howard is worth $25M annually, then Pujols is worth $50M.

Pujols does have a much higher batting average and OBP, but his power numbers are generically lower. I don't count RBI's against Pujols but Howard isn't that much WORSE arguably.

Pujols has the 4th highest career SLG and OPS in history. So no, his power numbers are NOT lower. Yes, he doesn't hit as many HRs or drive in as many runs, but he makes up for it in more doubles and far far less strikeouts.

Pujols is in a league of his own. Just look at his contact hitting. He has a HIGHER career BA than Ichiro! and less career strikeouts than Irchiro! For someone who's 4th all time in SLG and OPS to hit for contact better and strike out less than a sure HOF contact hitter is ridiculous.

Pujols walk to strikeout ratio is 1.4:1. That's almost Babe Ruth territory there. Howard's is 0.46:1.

Finally, consider how "clutch" Pujols is. His career line with RISP is 0.345 BA, 0.483 OBP, 0.675 SLG, 1.158 OPS. No one can touch him in the clutch. No one.

As for the RBI totals, you only have too look at who hits in front of Pujols compared to Howard.

Nice post.

I'm thinking Pujols is looking at a 6/170M deal extension offer from the Cards. Add in this years salary and next it would equal out to 8/202M. That seems about right. I don't know what to expect if he hits FA.

Howard: .279/.374/.582/.955/141

Pujols: .334/.427/.628/1.055/172

Fielder: .283/.381/.546/.927/140

(BA/OB/SA/OPS+)

Those are the three 1B coming up to free agency. I never meant to put Pujols out of the spot light or in a lesser role, saying that Howard was better. I was simply saying that to say that Howard couldn't hold Pujols' jock is a little out of line, as what I was getting from previous posts.

Pujols is #4 overall on the career OPS board, which is impressive enough, however speaking Howard is #21. Kinda funny looking at that list and seeing Lance Berkman and Todd Helton both above Alex Rodriguez who barely beats Howard at this point.

Howard is by no means worth $25m annually, but how do you really gather up what Pujols is worth?

If he were to hit FA, the sky is the limit. Personally, if A-Gon, Pujols, or Fielder do hit FA, I think we HAVE to sign one of them, no matter the cost. We need that big bat desperately. I think there is a good chance Pujols and Fielder resign, although Pujols might want more money than St. Louis can offer. I think A-Gon is extremely likely to hit FA, SD doesn't have the money to sign him.
