Master of the first pitch swing and pop up.

Also of the first pitch RBI triple. Garciaparra is the closest thing we've had in forever to a "true" 5 tool player.

Posted

Garciaparra hit 52 3B's during his entire ML career, 15 of them on the first pitch, 24 of them with men on. "Master" of the first-pitch RBI triple?

True five-tool player though.

I think he was referring to the triple he hit of game 6 of the 2003 ALCS VS the yanks

I thought about it in first instance, but it seemed too vague a statement.

Eh' date=' never really liked Nomar. Always thought he was a juicer.[/quote']

He sure looked the part.

And tiring glove adjustment as well.

If I did that tiring glove adjustment thing between every pitch, I swing at a lot of 1st pitches as well :D

Overall I like the move from a nostalgic standpoint.

I never, ever swing at the first pitch.

I always tought he did good swinging on the first pitch in his time in boston

I cant find the stat for it tough... can anyone find it ?

Not specifically in Boston, but his career:

.361/.368/.610 .978 OPS 87 2B 15 3B 67 HR

that's prety darn good

1st swing pop up my ass

.610 SLG. I'll agree with you and take that back. Jesus Christ.

LOL' date=' you know what I mean , I was referring to Paradisecity comment about 1st swing pop up[/quote']

I know, but i agreed with it, because it always pissed me off that he didn't work the count.

One of those "the eyes lie to you" stats that proves the need for statistical analysis I guess

I agree Dipre- it drove me nuts. It always seemed like against good pitching, he was seeing terrible pitches and swinging since they knew his desire to do so.

But again, "seems" isn't always what it seems, apparently.

The funny part is while I was typing that pop-up line I was thinking that I should look up the stat for it, but I knew if I posted that line more than one someone on here would find it anyway!

I thinking your "Against good pitching" line does hold some merit. From my recollection Mike Mussina used to always victimize Garciaparra by giving him a knuckle curve low and away early in the count which he would, without a doubt, swing at, usually resulting in a pop-up. Ditto for Clemens and the split.

Nomar's stats against Mussina and Clemens:

Mussina: .241 .236 /.352 .588 OPS (OBP lower than BA, WTF? 0 BB )

Clemens: .180/.222/.320 .542 OPS

Just a sample, but it seems like a logical statement if thought through.

I don't think he has played SS since 2005 or so.

He actually played 31 games at short for the Dodgers in 2008. 29 of those games he started at shortstop.

Either way, it's sad to see such a great player's career come to an end after taking the unfortunate turns it has over the years. Great move by both parties to bring him back to the Sox for his retirement though.

I still think he has something left in the tank though, but I'm sure his contributions at ESPN will be great.

Very misleading stat, since you cannot strike out on the first pitch. Lots of guys have great slash stats on an 0-0 count.

how is it misleading ?

this is based on over 1000 times that he's made contact on the first pitch

You can, however, ground out, fly out, pop out, line out and Ground into double or triple play. Besides, this is not a one hundred AB sample size we're talking about, he swung at the first pitch 1,279 times over his career. Nothing misleading about it, it is what it is.

Hall of Fame talent ruined by steroids. What a shame.

I've never heard any any talk of Nomar/steroids other than on Talksox.

What have I missed? Where are the pronounced forehead and split teeth?

He was slight of build in Pawtucket. Ten years later he's ripped. So? What evidence exists that he juiced? I want to know. I'm not being a homer wise ass here. I've never heard any talk of it. Why can't an athlete build his body over time?

Edit: I recognize that most players may have juiced in his era.

Just my opinion' date=' that's all.[/quote']

That's cool. I'm not one of the people here that will demand substantiation of your opinion.

Maybe he juiced. Maybe he didn't. Either way, He was very fun to watch. Although I always crossed my fingers on his throws to first!

I met him twice and almost ran him over with my car once. He seemed like a nice guy to me!
