Lou Merloni, Alex Speir and Joe Haggerty are all reporting that Nomar Garciaparra will sign a one-day minor league deal with the Sox today to retire as a member of the Red Sox organization. I guess that's what will be announced at the 10:30am conference today.

EDIT: Nomar will then move on to become an analyst for ESPN

WEEI.com's Lou Merloni reports that Nomar Garciaparra will sign a one-day, minor league deal with the Red Sox and then announce his retirement as a member of the organization. Garciaparra will then commence a career as a baseball analyst for ESPN.

Garciaparra spent nine years as a member of the Red Sox, hitting .323 with a .370 OBP, .553 slugging and .923 OPS. He was a five-time All-Star in Boston.

The Red Sox are holding a 10:30 a.m. press conference in Fort Myers at which Garciaparra will announce his retirement.

It's a pity we're only getting him back now. Especially since we were actually looking for maybe a backup SS this year.

I don't think he has played SS since 2005 or so.

Why not have him on the major league roster for 1 game? Wouldn't that accomplish the job better so that real fans can see him retire as a Red Sox rather than as some minor league "equivalent".

I know that. That's why it's a pity. We could have used what he used to be, that doesn't mean I've deluded myself into thinking he still is that.

I would imagine he prefers the "quieter" retirement considering how he left the organization.

Oh, I see. I misunderstood.

I think it's a nice gesture but I do agree with the poster that said it would have been nicer if he could have been on the roster for one game at the major league level. I wouldn't worry too much about how he left. The reception he received when he returned to Fenway last season, in an away team uniform, was amazing.

Very true. Maybe they will do something during the regular season.

That's what I was referring to. It'd be much more effective, and perhaps fair to a fan favourite, if we sent him out in style. Instead of this minor league crap, we can give him a baller goodbye in Fenway in front of the best m*****f***** fanbase. Thanks to creative accounting, it would be no problem to manipulate the rosters or the money to have him on the Red Sox for one game, and we can put him in a game where he would not be likely to jeopardise our chance at victory.

I think it's the least we could do.

The fact that he got a WS ring in 2004 is enough.

I'd argue that this would be more meaningful to him and more pertinent to his achievements in Boston. While the ring would have a higher nominal value, I think the Fenway retirement would be more deserved and more correlated with his career and contributions than a WS ring that he was achieved a while after he was traded.

The thing about putting him on the major league roster would not be good because that would include putting him on the 40 man eliminating one man from the 40 man and that the player would have to go through waivers.

I do like the throwing out of the first pitch. Bring in Nomar, and some of the other retired numbers and players. Johnny Pesky.

Nomar: It's a dream fulfilled to retire as a member of the Red SoxPosted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff March 10, 2010 08:55 AM

UPDATE, 11:11 a.m.: Theo Epstein, the man who traded Nomar to the Cubs, said during the press conference that this day meant a lot to him personally. He expanded on that thought later on.

"I grew up a Red Sox fan and even through I was already in baseball when he became a player, I knew what he meant to Boston and to the fans. When his agent contacted us about doing this, I thought it was great. He should go out as a Red Sox because he was such a great player."

Team president Larry Lucchino said the team hopes to have Nomar at Fenway Park for some sort of ceremony and the hope is that Garciaparra will be representing the team in the future at various events.

Nomar's father, Ramon, was in attendance along with his wife and twin daughters. Nomar ended the press conference by telling the girls he would be home a lot more often. But he also will be working on Baseball Tonight and announcing some games on ESPN

The contract gives him year 10 in the organization. He's probably looking to get his number retired, it's a covered call of sorts.

He's been unable to remain healthy and effective on the field since he left Boston.

maybe this will break the shortstop curse.

LOL, Nomar is so pathetic. Turns down 4 years and 60 million and then crawls back to the Sox just so he can retire in a Red Sox uniform. Guy was incredibly overrated during his tenure here, espically with the glove. He was one of the worst defensive SS's I've ever seen in Boston. We won a World Series because we traded his pathetic, overrated ass. He pumped himself pull of roids and his body decayed because of it. I find this all hilarious.

He was a top three offensive SS with a great glove but an erratic arm. Don't let your dislike of him blind you to the truth.

Your assessment of Nomar is pathetic. When did you see him play with the Sox? When you were 10-12 years old? I'm sure you had a very discerning eye for your age!

Nomar was a tremendous talent. Great bat, very good glove and as Dipre said, a sometimes erratic arm.

He may have made a bad decision turning down the 4/60 deal but at the time the other big name shortstop was making 25% more than that offer. Something you may not be aware of.
