We are lucky enough to live in a region that gives us the coverage that it does of the Red Sox farm system, but to me it seems we are always hyping guys up to be the next big thing, just because of all the media coverage the sox farm hands get. Im also starting to believe the organization believe all the media hype as well. Take Clay Buckholtz, Yes he threw a no-hitter in his first season, but so did Bud Smith.....Who is Bud Smith??? Thats my point. Clay could end up starting this season in triple A (which will not make him very happy) and while you really can never have enough pitching....enough is enough. The sox could have delt him in many different deals, but were too affraid they were giving away another Hanley Ramirez.

I by no means, mean to compare Bud Smith and Clay Buckholtz but guys before we start hyping up the next guy just remember there not always what they are cracked up to be.....

it's the job of the FO to hype their prospects, but hopefully they can differentiate between the hyped guys and the real deal.

Ahitter,

I understand that, but my point was what you said "but hopefully they can differentiate between the hyped guys and the real deal." I feel guys get held on to way too long at times, and the front office begins to buy into the hype

With the amount of time, resources and overall work that goes into grooming a prospect, i think organizations actually underhype them.

Dipre, it all depends on the players. There are certain players that teams either dont see fitting into their system or who teams may think have maximized their potential, so those players will get hyped for trade. There are other players who might be in a logjam and kept in the lower levels due to organizational depth, but the team wants to hang onto those players. Underhyping them will be good so that player doesnt get picked in a Rule V draft scenario.

The biggest hype seems to go into players who are taking over at the big league level, because selling a prospect promotion to the populace in this area is huge.

Was Jon Lester overhyped? Youkilis? Pedroia? Papelbon? Buchholz has simply followed in their footsteps. Compared to Lester and Papelbon his stuff is arguably better, his minor league numbers are better, and he's shown flashes of brilliance at the MLB level at 25 years of age. Might he fizzle out? Yes. Any prospect can get detoured from greatness, but there's a difference between an 18 year old being overhyped and a 25 year old who has dominated AAA being overhyped.

If he's been overhyped I would think you would have seen his name enough to realize there's no 't' in it. :dunno:

Ok.

See, putting that sigh crap in here does nothing but start fights.

Onto example's point. Every organization puts a certain spin on players. Some guys are legit, some guys arent. For every Jon Lester, there are two George Kottaras's. It happens in every organization and the Red Sox are not immune. Lately, though, they have been living up to the hype.

Dude.

What i said in my post was not referring to the Red Sox, but baseball in general. Had you taken the time to think about it you would've gotten that.

If you wanted to fight about that, you were going to fight alone.

"Another championship for the best franchise in the history of organized sports."

You might want to change that sig. Maybe Men's sports? I don't know, word it however you want but a team that has 27 championships since 1947 trumps the Yankees:

http://brakettes.com/history/

"Recognized as the greatest organized women’s sports franchise of all time, the Brakettes’ 27 National Championships are unparalleled, and only approached by Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees’ 26 World Series victories. The Raybestos Brakettes won eight straight titles from 1971 through 1978, a mark comparable to the Boston Celtics’ domination in the 1960's or UCLA basketball from 1964-73."*

*This info needs to add one for the Yankees but the point stands.

most organization's are guilty of over-hyping their prospects. braves did it with marte, yankees did it with duncan("next konerko"), tabata("next manny") , hughes("next clemens").

it is what it is.
