With Chad Gaudin about to throw the first pitch of the first spring training game, I figured I'd create the Yankees' catch-all spring training game thread.

Gaudin, Mitre, and Aceves have all pitched well, but so have the Pirates' pitchers. A-Rod just recorded the Yankees' first hit leading off the fifth.

I saw an inning earlier where Cervelli was on first. He broke for second and was thrown out.

Never the less, he has some wheels. I didn't know that.

Yeah, not really sure why he's trying to steal haha. Considering his position, he's not really slow, but he's not fast either.

Anyway, Ramiro Pena just homered leading off the sixth to give the Yankees a lead. Nick Johnson, having replaced Teixeira at first, is now coming up in a RBI situation.

EDIT: And Johnson delivers with a long double over the head of the right fielder, who is former Yankees' minor leaguer Jose Tabata (and these runs have come off former Yankees Steven Jackson).

Nick Johnson already scratched from today's game with a stiff lower back. Let's hope this isn't the start of a trend.

This stuff happens a lot the first few weeks of spring training. It's mostly just the body telling you it's not used to playing baseball. That's why they have the players only take a few at bats and the pitchers only pitch an inning the first time through.

Based on what he said, it doesn't sound like something serious. You always have to worry with him, but I think Imperial is spot on.

Francisco Cervelli was beaned today and sustained his second concussion in four months. This is gruesome. I think most people have very little understanding about the severity of concussions.

I'm hoping he can recover and continue to pursue his career with no lasting problems.

Further, I'm hoping Jacko has the time to explain to us what a concussion is and what impact it can have going forward.

Concussions were essentially considered brain bruises back in the day, but we are finding out that they are a lot more than that now. They can be the impetus for early onset dementia, personality changes, mood changes, etc. Concussions can have different effects on different people. Some can become concussed and a few days later be perfectly fine in the short term. Others may have a mild concussion and have post-concussive effects for months to a yr afterward. Some symptoms ranging from headaches to memory loss, vertigo, persistent vomiting and personality changes. We have barely unlocked the majority of the brain's function, so I would be lying to you if I said that we fully understand what happens when the brain gets injured. But for the most part, you could be asymptomatic after them or you could be devastated. Only time will tell

You mean damage to the brain can cause negative long-term effects? Who'd a thunk it.

Wow something i can a agree with. Lol. I have had 5 mild concussions so far. all from hockey and i was back within the next few days of playing. While my friend on his first had to miss 2 months of school and couldn't play sports for 4-5 months.

This post was unnecessary.

I wasn't making fun of Jacko, I was making fun of the medical community that until recently is just coming to the realization that concussions can have long-term negative effects.

...and he has a job helping the mentally handicapped... and example of government run health care?

What does government run health care have to do with this? That one went over my head.

The medical community suspected it for a long time, the problem is, they didnt have proof until NFL players started donating their brains after death

Right, that is exactly what I was referring to. It seems like common sense that damaging your brain can lead to long-term negative effects, yet until recently sports players have been run out there concussion after concussion with only minor precautions.

Well, the problem is that a lot of theoretical conclusions based on biochemisty or biophysiology arent actually true when tested. Exactly why you don't make a consensus statement on something until you have proof.

I'm in Tampa right now. Should I see the Yankees play?

f*** no is the correct answer.

You should go heckle them. There are very few hecklers at Spring Training.

Are you there on business?

Yaba Daba Do looked like crap today.

Yeah, Albaladejo never really had a shot to make the roster from the outset, but he my have pitched himself out of an opportunity to be called up due to injury.
