I still think there's value in a guy who could be a very solid DH' date=' could provide a reliable glove at 3B if the team he goes to has a high-range SS and, by all accounts, is a great clubhouse influence. But Jacko pretends he's harder to get rid of than a half-dozen garbage bags full of muffin stumps.[/quote']

But if he were a Yankee, it would cost Texas Neftali Feliz just to get their foot in the door.

I agree.

And as usual, jacko being jacko:lol:

Thing is, a guy like Lowell could be a stabilizing influence on a young clubhouse like Texas'. They don't have a lot of leadership right now, they're looking to reject pile guys for it. A pro like Lowell could have been worth his weight in intangibles if nothing else.

He should stay, even if nothing more than a contingency for Beltre starting the season batting .100.

Or Ortiz, or a Youkilis injury.

Lowell should get about 200 at bats this year between this and that. It'd be more if one of our other corner infielders were a LHH.

He can get more.

If Tito's more about the team and less about "loyalty", Lowell should start against every tough lefty that faces the Sox, he should spell both Youk and Beltre, so 350 AB's (Tito permitting) should not be out of the question.

so when Lowell covers for Beltre... Lowell at 3B or Youk?

I'll go ahead and say Youk. Lowell's range is still extremely limited, so maybe playing 1st can help him mask that.

Probably Youk. I'm not sure they feel Lowell has had enough reps at first.

Can't say I'm unhappy. This basically kills any chance you will go get AGon if Lowell stays on the team.

Because this team won't eat a large amount of money to release a guy who's in their way.

That's why Julio Lugo's still with the team.

I don't think that affects the situation at all. If they want AGon, they'll get rid of Lowell-- they have no problem waiving players.

They parted ways with Smoltz and Penny... roughly $12.5 million (Lowell's 2010 salary). So yes I agree, that just having Lowell on the team will not hinder the Sox trading for AdGon

But of course' date=' we all responded with logic. Gom isn't interested in logic, just baiting.[/quote']

Maybe so.

But I'd like him to explain his view.

Personally, I believe that if the Sox target AdGon they will acquire him irrespective of Lowell's status.

I hope you're wrong. The thing is this...where do you play him?

Beltre is at 3rd. Youkilis is at first. Ortiz is the DH.

You get AGon...my guess is that Youk moves back to 3rd, Ortiz is probably the DH....which means you 15 million sitting on the bench for two players. I must say...that I LOVE IT!

The Sox don't seem to have a problem eating salaries. Rich boy owners have a different perspective from Talksox members. If either or both of Lowell, Beltre's salaries, need to be eaten, so be it. If Theo has a hard-on for any player, they can make it happen.

Where do you Play AGon... lol. The Sox would gladly make room to give him the starting 1st base job. Lowell, Ortiz and Beltre are all set to be free agents at end of the season. So its not like theyd worry about being on the hook for their salaries next season

Fook yeah!

"It's quite simple".

If the Sox see a need before or at the deadline, they have the resources to make a move that will make a difference. A concept that should be comprehensible. At least for those with IQ's over 90.

This is from the same team that didn't go an extra 1-2 million per year for Damon and Tex, and lost them both. Sorry if I seem cynical.

Tex is a bitch who wears the skirt in the relationship with his wife. Sox could have offered 3 more million a year and he still would have signed with the Yankees because he has no balls.

You were obviously there during negotiations. Oh wait, you weren't! You're just running your mouth!

I love the "The Yankees signed Damon and Tex for the absolute maximum amount of money they were willing to spend on them" line of thinking...

Lowell likely done playing after 2010

Posted by Amalie Benjamin April 10, 2010 05:02 PM

KANSAS CITY -- Mike Lowell, who has been relegated to the bench by the Red Sox this season, said before today's game that this will most likely be the final season of his career. Lowell's three-year contract, signed after the 2007 season, expires this offseason.

"This probably is my last year," Lowell said, in the clubhouse in Kansas City. "If this was the fourth year of my career, I would have choked everyone by now in the organization. Straight honest. I'm a much more mellow family man now."

Asked when he came to that conclusion, Lowell said that it happened three years ago, when he resigned with the Sox, turning down an extra year with the Phillies.

"I have no qualms about it," he said. "My agent wanted to kill me for not taking a four-year deal. I said I don't know if I want to play four years, but I know if I sign a four-year contract I'm going to play four years.

"I try to look at the big picture. I see my family, I see where the age of my kids are at. They're both starting to go to school next year, all that good stuff. There's a lot of reasons for Dad to be there. Has this scenario maybe put baseball a little bit lower? I don't think so, but it grinds at you a little. That's where that mental challenge comes in."

Lowell is in the lineup today for the first time this season. He didn't start on Opening Day for the first time in his career, and has yet to see any action at all. He has appeared extremely frustrated through spring training, as he worked to come back from offseason thumb surgery and to continue to improve from hip surgery in the 2008 offseason.

Could anything change his mind?

"From playing next year?" he said. "Well, I'm not 100 percent sure. I would say I'm well up there. But, no, actually I would love for the last year of my career to be the best year of my career, if that would be the case. I don't think there's any better way of going out than on top. Why not?"

That seems unlikely to happen, unless the Sox find a trading partner for Lowell. There has been little interest in the third baseman through spring training.

"If I hit 30 home runs this year or I hit three, I don't think that stance is going to change," Lowell said. "Now whether I want to or not, that's totally different. But I don't think my numbers will determine [that]. I'm pretty confident in what I've done, physically what I'm capable of doing. Yeah, you can look at, oh, this is a walk year, the next contract. Doesn't even enter my mind.

"Because if it would [have happened], like I said in the fourth year of my career, I would have been the biggest jerk in spring training and tried to get my way out of here. Because why not put up numbers when you show basically for me at 60 or 75 percent I was capable of putting up respectable numbers. I've never proclaimed that I'm 100 percent right now, but I'm much better than last year. I've said that since Day One."

Lowell is getting a start tonite at 3B. The guy needs to play in order to get himself in game shape. I don't feel too sorry for him. Heck he's made $39 mil the last 3 years, and last year he was hurt much of the season. Tito does have a problem balancing loyalties here between Papi and Lowell. Winning has to take precedence--you do whatever you think is best for winning. That means seeing what both players can do.
