Papelbon will be a FA in 2012' date=' so one more year of arbitration after this one.[/quote']

I would then like to see another one year deal then next year sign him to a long term deal.

Thanks.

Papelbon doesn't want a multi-year deal:

Arbitration figures due tomorrow

The Red Sox have four arbitration-eligible players (Manny Delcarmen, Ramon Ramirez, Jeremy Hermida, and Jonathan Papelbon), with whom they will exchange figures at noon tomorrow if the sides haven't reached agreements.

General manager Theo Epstein has yet to go to arbitration in his tenure with the team, but Papelbon just might break that streak. While it appears likely that the other three could come to a deal with the Sox, Papelbon could be a special case. He received a one-year deal for $6.25 million last season, and is likely looking for a large bump from that figure.

Papelbon has been adamant about setting the bar for closers in terms of salary, and has a chance to prove that this year again. Neither side appears interested in a long-term deal. The Sox, as a rule, do not give out multi-year deals to relievers (other than to Keith Foulke). And Papelbon has said repeatedly that he is fine with going year-to-year, rather than giving up money for the security of a multi-year deal. The Sox also have Daniel Bard, likely their closer of the future, in their back pocket.

The closest that Epstein came to going to arbitration was with Wily Mo Pena, when the two sides came to an agreement moments before walking into the hearing.

Thats the thing, though. Papelbon wants to set the market for closers. For example, Jose Valverde has been one of the best closers in baseball over the past 2-3 seasons and he gets a 2 yr 14 mil deal. That's chump change for someone who dominates a rather important position. I think Paps wants to use Mariano's salary as a standard and try to set the market a bit higher.

If hes adamant about setting the bar for closers then I suspect he'll be doing it elsewhere.

theres no way theo pays this guy 60M for 4 years but thats what he'll be looking for.

If Rivera's contract isn't put forth for Papelbon, he'd want at least Frankie Rodriguez money, and that's still too much $$ for a closer, especially a closer who's WHIP has been on the rise over the past 3 years, and his K rates slightly dimish over that time period.

I'm not sure about you guys, but it seemed almost like every save opp Paps had last year he'd let a min of 2 ppl get on base then K the side or get a lucky DP ball. I don't want that from my closer.

I disagree with you, Plump, on the basis that even Papelbon's "declining numbers over the last 3 years" are still at the elite level in year 4. You can't just compare Papelbon to previous version of Papelbon, you have to compare him to the rest of the league's closers, and when you do that, he suddenly becomes worth a big contract. JMHO.

I disagree. The thread of consistency that the yankees have had throughout the last 14 years has been largely attributable to Mo being in their pen. If you put an average closer out there, they would have missed the playoffs more than just one time since 1995. Papelbon has the same kind of impact. he deserves the going rate for shut down closers. If he goes somewhere else, we would regret it for years.

He wants the best contract ever for a closer. Him being a free agent would entertain a bidding war over his services. Even if he was offered 4 years/$36 million, he would turn it down because he would look at 38 year old Mariano Rivera getting 3 years/$45 million, and lord knows he loves to compare himself to Mo. The average salary would have to start at $12 million with him

Huston Street just got 3/22.5 from Colorado so I think Riverside is right, Papelbon will be looking for at least $12 mil per.

I doubt we see Paps in a red sox uniform in 2 years from now

Forget doubt, I'd be shocked if he's still here in 2012 unless he annihilates his shoulder and is forced to take a one-year, incentive-laden deal

Theo will never give a MR/CL...any non starter any long term extension at that kind of money.

You're right I can't compare him to where he was...however if I was the GM, I'd gladly bring up his personal declining performance and use incentives where given. Papelbon would/will get the biggest FA closer contract ever. I hope he does, and I hope it's from the Yankees (I honestly do).

I cannot see any reason to give any closer, even Mo, a contract that large b/c of the injury risk. You're paying a closer for 1 IP of work normally per apperance. If he gets injured, I'm out of money that could have gotten me a comparable pitcher like say John Lackey who can pitch 6+ IP per apperance.

I think this is a fair deal for both sides. It was possible that Papelbon could have topped $10 million if this went to arbitration. He was worth $8.8 million last year according to WAR and that was his worst year as a closer. He's been worth over $9 million every other year including a $13.5 million value just two years ago.

Dojji enjoy Papelbon the next 2 seasons. I'll be absolutely shocked if he is on The Red Sox beyond that. I say it's 70-30 he is on the team next off season. Worse odds if Bard breaks out. He wants top $ and the Red Sox don't play that game.

Papelbon will be playing for whatever team gives him 4+ years @ 15M a year. Some GM will be desperate enough to offer that. Hell the Yankees would probably offer that just to take him from the Red Sox.

Can't say that I don't want him for our closer, but he was extremely hard to watch a lot of last season.

^But still got it done. And got it done better than every other closer out there not named Rivera, Nathan or Soria.

Really? The Sox don't pay market value for premium talent? Do JD Drew and Josh Beckett know about this? Does Daisuke Matsuzaka?

And Theo will probably match, because Papelbon is an irreplaceable talent.

Two things:

1) You can make this point without being you-know-what.

2) John Lackey says hello as well.

And Theo will probably match, because Papelbon is an irreplaceable talent.

I'd wait and see.
