Mariners Close To Acquiring Kotchman?

By Tim Dierkes [January 5 at 2:31pm CST]

The Mariners might be on the verge of acquiring first baseman Casey Kotchman from the Red Sox. Here's the progression of reports.

First, ESPN's Buster Olney tweeted that the Mariners "figure to be the team with the best fit" for Kotchman, who became expendable when the Red Sox signed Adrian Beltre. Then Prospect Insider's Chris Crawford wrote that the Mariners are "on the verge" of acquiring Kotchman. After that ESPN's Brock and Salk tweeted the same message as Prospect Insider, but thanked Olney for the tip.

So then who the hell is the backup first baseman? Do they use V-Mart to get Tek in occaisionally or do they keep Lowell as a backup?

They trade Lowell too.

IMO, they might get an OF like Fernando Tatis or Jonny Gomes who can also play 1B, since V-Mart can play 1B if need be when 'Tek catches.

could we be trading for Bill Hall?

would fit either needed role for us -- UT OF/IF or UT IF. Experience at SS and CF would make him an exemplary bench guy, and there's the whole "RHH at Fenway" thing going for it too.

And he's also black, in case conspiracy theorists keep alleging Boston's racism. I'm not exactly a Bill Hall fan but I believe that he'll be of more use to us than Kotchman. That said, I'm surprised that we are trading Kotchman before Lowell, in terms of salary relief that is.

Rosenthal is saying on Twitter that Hall is headed to Boston for Kotchman. He didn't specify if there was more headed back our way.

Holy hell, what a nice move!

In his career, he's posted around average or above average UZR's at 2B, SS, 3B and the OF.

Not to mention he's shown the ability to hit in the past.

His Lefty career splits are .270/.339/.471/.810

So they're also going to assemble a really good bench to protect the main lineup from injuries/ineffectiveness. I like.

How does Hall affect the luxury tax? By what I've read, I think that means his 9 million dollar salary will factor into it, pushing them over.

The Mariners are supposed to eat 7.1 of the 9 million remaining on his contract.

I thought that the Brewers were eating the 7.1 million from the original trade.

I read it wrong then. You're probably correct.

Indeed, you are correct.

I like this deal, great utility guy. WEEI was reporting that Hall was owed 6.5 mil next year, and the M's were going to eat part of it.

Good move for the Sox. Clears up some of the logjam and adds a quality guy to the bench who has tons of versatility. Hall can pretty much play anywhere besides first, catcher, and pitcher. I've long wanted to see the Yanks get him. Too bad he ends up in Boston. At the same time, good move for the M's as well. I wonder if this means Russell Branyan definitely won't be back in Seattle.

Good, now the whining about Kotchman can end.

Nice to have Hall.

Liking the recent moves.

NO MORE KOTCHMAN!!!!!!!

I didn't dislike him, but the idea of having him start at first makes me sick.

That is all.
