On the topic of a Beckett re-sign' date=' I have a hard time grasping it. Think about it. Beckett turns 30 in May of 2010. So, he'd essentially be hitting the market for his year 31 season. Halladay, OTOH, turns 33 in May and is about to sign a 3yr $60 million extension for 2011-2013, his age 34-36 seasons. Now, I think Beckett is above Lackey and below Halladay right now, but if he has another good season, then he could theoretically command Halladay money since they would get 3 more prime yrs out of him than they would Halladay. So, unless Beckett is willing to take a hometown discount, I find it very hard to believe that the sox would shell out $85 million for 5 yrs of Lackey and $100 million for 5 yrs of Beckett.[/quote']

I can't picture Beckett demanding $20 mil/year. He may not take a significant discount but somewhere in the Lackey range would probably be enough for him.

That seems doable for the Sox. Consider that Lugo, Lowell, and Ortiz come off of the books in 2011.

They have $56 mil committed that year with another 17 going to Lackey hypothetically. Let's say they give Beckett the same. Papelbon will probably get around $8 mil? If they target $150 mil payroll that year, that leaves around $45-50 mil for a LF, C, DH, and CI.

Quick math but it's conceivable that we can fill those spots admirably for that much.

Adrian Gonzales is going to be a Red Sox. I simply cannot contain myself, the need to pound my chest is too strong.

Absolutely agree with you. This opens us up to possibly trading Ellsbury, and that we're in serious talks with Mike Cameron just sounds that much better. Although, I'd like to keep Ellsbury.

Seeing as how my Gonzales to the Sox propositions were met with general skepticism, the fact that he looks Boston-bound causes a sense of extreme satisfaction in me.

What strains the possibility of coincidence isn't so much that, as that Emmz didn't post between when Dipre left and when he returned.

Well, I've (along with a700) tried to mediate here.

Clearly Gom needs to drive his cab to Yorktowne Heights High School and enroll in an ADULT Education English class.

I'm trully sorry you dropped the ball. No need to remind us all of your continued failure.

I can smell your fear.

I love Lackey. Great signing. Best rotation in baseball.

I don't love lackey. He looks so much like Tex (Horseface).

But I have said that I would like to see the Sox sign him.

He's a tough competitor.

One of the comparatively few SP Sox fans hate to see facing the Sox.

I hope he is worth 5/85.

He should be. For two years, anyway.

He is hideous, that's true.

I wonder if this spending spree will limit Boston next year.

With Ortiz and Lowell coming off the books, one of those salaries would have to be used to resign Beckett. With Crawford, Mauer, Lee, etc., as free agents, the Yankees may be set to make a huge splash.

Could it be that these two financial elephants alternate big years in free agency?

Maure stays put in the land of lakes and Lee fades to irrelevance.

Crawford should be fielding caroms off the Monster.

You heard it first here.

I have no doubt the Yankees will be willing and able to make a big splash next year. But as you said, two big contracts are coming off the books. I think the Sox will be able to at least make a run at a big FA. Long ways to go until then.
