Almost gave up another early goal, but we look good otherwise. We just got f***ed out of a goal on a very questionable off-sides call.

For all the talk from ital about how the US is only where it is due to a soft goal, it could be the soft goal in the Algeria/Slovenia matchup that eliminates them if they don't beat Algeria.

Once again, that isn't my point. I agree that the US was badly screwed against Slovenia and should have beaten them. I'm just saying that they also should have lost against England, which would give the US 3 points entering today, rather than 2. In any event, the US would gain a 4th point from a tie with Algeria and would move onto the next match, if things happened as they should have.

And, I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm pointing out the irony of having one soft goal in their match help them and having another soft goal in another match eliminate them.

WOW! So proud of this team. That was one of the best games I've ever seen. How did we not win something like 4-0? Regardless, we just went from being eliminated to WINNING THE GROUP. Amazing stuff.

Another reason I'm really, really glad we won is that had we not I would've been pissed off all day and not felt like watching the two matches at 1:30, and both are huge.

Also, kudos to Algeria for playing for the... tie. They need to win by 2+ to advance and yet they were totally comfortable playing to tie. Uh, great effort guys.

Congratulations on advancing and winning the group. I think this is the third time that England helped you guys out though. ;) Good luck in your next match.

How'd England help us out?

If it wasn't obvious enough, which I'm surprised that it isn't, I'll provide a list.

1. By the goalkeeper giftwrapping the goal for you guys that gave you a draw instead of having you lose 1-0.

2. By drawing Algeria 0-0, that gave the US the advantage over us heading into this match, giving you the goal scored tiebreaker, whereby you could have gone onto the next round simply drawing 0-0 (if we drew Slovenia 0-0)

3. By beating Slovenia, and combining with point #1, that moves the US to the top of the group, instead of 2nd place.

That's not really helping.

If England beat a team that the US needed to lose... that'd be "helping". Even then... dumb.

"Hey, good thing our goalie misplayed a ball against you and we didn't play well enough against Algeria! It's cool, don't mention it!"... that's not "helping".

Regardless, it'd all be moot had Edu's goal not been disallowed.

If England has to play Germany in the 2nd round instead of you guys thanks to points 1,2 and 3, I'd consider that helping. You guys should send England a fruit basket if you get to play Serbia or Ghana while we play Germany.

I couldn't disagree more with your post, however I doubt that a full on argument will go anywhere. If it wasn't England that helped you, it was the Gods. The point is, it's naive and downright ignorant to not even acknowledge that in the end, you were helped. Granted, it was a makeup for when the US got screwed over a couple of times, but still, much went in the US's favour to counteract previous injustices.

Had you just initially responded "Surely you're aware that I was just posting in jest..." you wouldn't look like such an arrogant moron.

As it is... you're an idiot.

The chips fall where they fall -- if England did all of those things in the interest of "helping" the United States, it'd be one thing, but don't mistake England's failures for helping. Again, even bringing it up? Dumb.

I would love to respond to this by saying what I really think, but I'm on thin ice around here as it is, so I'm just going to ignore this and avoid a flame war. Your misguided cheap shots will not stand though.

Ital, the problem is, when you say England helped out the US, no matter what your intentions are, it's going to come across as you trying to take away credit from the US. With that being said, the combination of Robert Green and England's last two results were favorable to the US. I just think that SR is upset with your word choice.

However, even if you take away the point from the England match, they still deserved to come through group play with six points, which would have been enough to move onto the knockout stage.

Exactly this. Algeria helped the U.S. with their good defense against England, and by losing to them today, but who is giving them credit? The U.S. got through, so we're overjoyed. England got through despite a rough start, so you should be happy too. Everyone wins here, right?

And, if we go back to his "should have" suppositions re: the soft goal and bad officiating, the US still would have won the group, with 6 points, +2 GD, 4 GS to England's 6 points, +2 GD, 2 GS. Whoever plays Germany in the second round will be the team that "should" be playing Germany. Fruit basket denied.

EDIT: Nevermind, England would have 7 points. Still no fruit basket though. And, I'm also not sure playing Ghana or Serbia is much of a gift. Those teams look pretty good.

I am not trying to take credit away from the US. I have said COUNTLESS TIMES, that the US was screwed in the Slovenia match, and in this match, and that the US deserves to go through. I have never implied, hinted, or even suggested otherwise. I am happy for the USA team as I am rooting for them as well as the English (and Italian) teams.

My point is, which is mentioned in your first paragraph, is that whether intentional or not, the events that transpired in the England/USA match, England/Algeria match, and England/Slovenia match all worked in the US's favour. Whether the help is intentional or not is irrelevant. If England's actions worked in the favour of the US, then England helped the US. There's no room for debate or question.

Thank you for mediating Yankees228. I did not understand why my point was not coming across. I am not trying to take credit away from everyone. The USA was the better team in the group play, and I wish them the best of luck in the next match.

I agree. I'm rooting for the US and England, so I'm happy that both make it through. I never wanted this to turn into something more than it should be.

They'll stand.

I find your mentioning it to be at least a little arrogant, and I really do find it idiotic to even mention. I just figured it was silly to mention, even in jest, and gets more and more-so since you're actually defending it in a less jocular tone.

I'm not trying to say anything in jest. I am completely serious, and it's been shown multiple times by multiple people in the thread that my point is right.

Look, I'm not trying to be arrogant. I have given full credit to the US team. They have played better, and they DESERVE to win the group. I'm just saying that it'd be ignorant and naive to ignore the obvious. I've made my point, and others have acknowledged it, so as far as I'm concerned, this conversation is over. So why not celebrate the fact that the US and England are moving on to the next round. Like Palodios said, everyone should be happy. Nobody should be insulting anyone.

Posted

My point is why even mention it? That is the arrogance.

I'm not arguing that your goalie misplaying a ball didn't benefit the United States, but it happens like a blown assignment, or an error. The whole thing just seems arrogant to me, is all.

The Blackhawks had a great season but Michael Leighton sure helped 'em out by letting Patrick Kane's shot go five-hole.

Germany and Ghana and Serbia and Australia are both tied 0-0 at the half.

Who advances there is still totally up in the air. I'm really not sure who I'd rather face between Germany, Serbia, and Ghana. All three are really good teams.
