Maryland wins again today. If Duke losses they finish first in ACC. Lets go UNC!

Any idea who wins the tie break between Maryland/Duke if Duke wins tonight?

Aren't they co-league champions?

Duke owns tiebreaker. I forget why but one of the commentators said it during Maryland/Virginia game.

What happened to MSU tonight?

We played as pathetic of a basketball game as I've seen all season. Terrible effort in a game we had to have. I'm disgusted. Looks like we're NIT bound unless we turn it around dramatically and win the SEC tournament again.

At least I have the Red Sox to look forward to soon.

Duke beat Maryland by more than Maryland beat Duke. I'm sure that's what it is.

MSU, there is a positive of going to the NIT...If you get to new york, it will give your team some confidence going into next season.

I disagree. I don't think there's anything good about going to the NIT. For the longest time I thought it meant "Not In Tournament", and that's not far from the truth. Nobody other than students of the schools watch the NIT, and while the Bulldogs have only made the tournament 10 times, they've made it 6 times in the past decade, being 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, and 2009. Even though they've never gotten past the 2nd round in those tournaments, they've still become accustomed to making the tournament and being relegated to the NIT isn't good enough for them. While I'm not a Miss St. fan, I don't believe that their goal at the beginning of the season was to make the NIT.

Even if they did well in the NIT, they'd still be losing Varnardo and Stewart, one of which being the only player in the NCAA to have 1,000+ pts, 1,000+ rebounds, and 500+ blocks, and their commitment list (all two recruits) don't look impressive enough to replace them. I'm not saying that they will be bad next year, but they are going to need more than a good NIT finish to be a good team next year. Besides, I doubt there is a correlation between an NIT finish and success the following season.

I'd personally rather lose in the first round of the NCAA tournament than win the NIT title, but that's another debate for another time.

Nobody gives a damn about the NIT. In all likelihood that's where we're headed, but it's not something you can really get excited about.

Italstallianion, we did make the Final Four in '96. That was a hell of a team.

I am aware of that. When I said "they didn't make it past the 2nd round in those tournaments" it was referring to the 6 tournaments since 2002 that I had previously listed. The 1996 team was pretty damn good ftw.

Ah, gotcha.

But yeah, the NIT sucks.

Well the NIT was not always viewed with such disdain. Back when I played ('70s), the NIT was quite prestigious. It was a big deal to play in a post season tourney at Madison Square Garden. I remember Julius Erving leading his U. Mass team to the NIT. That was a big deal around here.

Marketing has changed all that.

I wonder how the players and coaching staff feel about playing in the NIT. They get to do their thing past the regular season. Maybe they see things differently?

It's painful to watch Illini games this season... they have such great potential but just constantly find a way to screw themselves.

Big East tournament underway now.

South Florida got an ugly win over Depaul 58-49 earlier.

UConn has had a pitiful showing today and are getting embarassed by St. Johns. 67-44 with about 2 minutes left. Wow.

Absolutely right. I'm ashamed to be a Uconn (men's) fan. Oh well, as bad as the men are playing, the women are playing just as good. They go for win 72 and the Big East Title tonight at 7 on ESPN.

I cannot possibly force myself to watch women's basketball, especially during Championship Week with the insane amount of great men's games that are on tv. Not to mention the UConn women never play a close game to begin with.

While I do love ripping on women's basketball, the dominance of the Uconn Women is insane. In their 71 wins they've won them all by double digits, they've beaten 20+ ranked teams by an average of 22.5 points. They've won their games by an average of 30+ points, which are all greater numbers than UCLA's 88 game stretch.

So even though I love to rip on how futile women's basketball is, with respect to low scoring/lopsided games despite a smaller ball, smaller 3 point line and a shorter shot clock, I feel that the dominance of the Uconn team is amazing regardless of the sport. Plus women's college basketball is still miles ahead of the WNBA because people who are a fan of the particular university have something to fall back on.

For the record, I would never watch a women's basketball game unless Uconn were playing, and I know very little about any other women's team. It's not like I'm a fan of the sport, I'm just a fan of this particular team.
