I think that if Figgins signs with the Mariners, Red Sox fans can forget about trading for Felix.

This is a great deal for the Mariners, IMO. With Ichiro and Figgins at the top of the lineup, this team will run all day in spacious Safeco.

The Mariners finished 12 games behind the Angels. If they sign Figgins, I'd say they Mariners gained three games on them. Signing Bay or Holliday, or...just imagine if they turned around and got Lackey...the West could get very interesting.

Was there ever a chance of trading for Felix?

I thought it was insane of them. Theo wasted his time at the trade deadline and let Lee go to the Phillies.

I cannot understand how a team will take the best pitcher on the planet, without question, under 25 years old, and NOT build around him. It made no sense. You could sign Felix to a 10 year contract RIGHT NOW..and he'd be a year older than Halladay when the contract would be finished [i didn't check the ages, I'm too lazy, but I presume I can't be more than a year off].

I would rather go bankrupt as a team than trade Felix if I was the Mariners GM. f*** that.

If I was the Mariners, and I absolutely had to trade him...I'd START by asking for Youkilis AND Buchholz with maybe a little Pedroia thrown in. From the Yankees, Hughes, Joba, Jackson and Montero MIGHT keep me from hanging up on you.

He's that good.

I love how you make it seem like you actually know what went down in that scenario.

For all we know, the foundation for that trade could've been laid in the winter meetings.

Please stick to the facts.

Both you and I agree that he it was a pipe dream to trade him. Why waste your time then?

You might not have thought about this, but maybe since there was no chance to get Halladay or Lee, they tried exploring other venues.

The Seattle Mariners could have a new third baseman by the end of the day.

Seattle appears close to a deal with free agent Chone Figgins, a source familiar with the team's thinking confirmed to ESPN.com Friday.

However, the source denied a FoxSports.com report that the contract would be for four years and $36 million, saying that financial terms were still being negotiated.

There were also indications Friday that, while all signs point toward Figgins landing in Seattle, his old team, the Los Angeles Angels, wasn't completely out of the running.

Seattle has aggressively pursued Figgins to replace Adrian Beltre at third base. The Mariners offered Beltre arbitration, but know Beltre is seeking a long-term deal elsewhere and don't expect him to accept it.

A fascinating, but still unanswered, question is how the Mariners would fit Figgins and Ichiro Suzuki in their lineup.

Figgins has batted leadoff for the Angels in all but two games over the last two seasons, and was second only to Derek Jeter in on-base percentage (.395) among AL leadoff hitters. But Ichiro has been a fixture in the leadoff hole in Seattle for the last nine years, aside from 13 games in the No. 3 slot in 2002 and 2004.

I don't know if I like this move for Figgins. I would have thought we would have ended up on a better team then Seattle.

Seattle has a serious chance to contend if they add a bat and a starter. That was probably Figgins' line of thinking.

Umm...Lee was traded...so how was there no chance?

Read it again. Slowly.

Please explain, o wise one...if Lee was traded to the Phillies, why was there no chance for the Red Sox to get him BEFORE he was traded?

[This, I gotta hear...]

*Sigh*

What i meant was that perhaps the reason they kicked the tires on Felix is because they were turned down by Cleveland who was finalizing a deal with Philly for Lee.

Considering what they offered for Felix, I believe it would have taken a lot less. I'm not debating the difference in value needed for both to be given up, that's obvious. However, he could have been got by the Red Sox. I realize this is pure speculation on both our parts, but there are certain players I wouldn't bother asking for. Pujols is one. Felix. Lincecum. Those guys are staples on their team. You'd have to overwhelm a team to even get them to listen. That's what I think he did. Waste time shooting for something that was not going to happen.

Speculation of course. I just can't remember this guy making a drop dead, great deal. I did like the Wagner deal..if only because you finagled the Mets out of a first round pick.

Teams should stop picking on Minaya. He should be allowed to have "do-overs".

Again, i'm working under the assumption the Lee deal was nearly completed before the Sox could even ask.

So you'd want proven talent from the Sox and only prospects from the Yankees?

This is a great point. Perhaps the author should follow it.

The author of the post i'm quoting should follow it indeed.

He should also learn that i could not care less about what he thinks since i have no idea who the f*** he is since he just joined the other day.

Maybe the author of the post i'm quoting should shut his mouth and know his role.

It's not that. It's who is actually young and good on the Yankees? Maybe throw Cano in there as well...but that's about it. Everyone good on the Yankees would be over 30, except for Cano, Hughes, and Joba. So if I was the Mariners, I'd start there, I'd guess.

Holy hell i actually agree with Gom again. The humanity.

I don't think Felix gets moved this off-season, but if I'm the Mariners I ask for Joba, Hughes and Montero. I'd ask for them over Cano, since they already have a solid 2B in Jose Lopez.

Jose Lopez is getting moved to 1st.

If Branyan doesn't return, and i doubt he does.

Haha, board senority. I love this guy's defense mechanism.

Anyway, I think the Sox should go after Lackey, and save the prospects that they would have to give up for Halladay.

Either way, I'd ask for Montero. They have nothing at catcher.

EDIT: And is there a link on Lopez more recent than this one?

I think , but only by a couple days.

It's a possibility anyway. Someone will bite big on Branyan's year for sure.

I could also use your stupidity, immaturity and overall annoyance level as a defense mechanism.

Someone who uses Fld% as a defense-measuring method in 2009..........Hmmm...........

That's because you stopped making up stats, and actually READ what I write now.

I knew you'd come around. Just like a puppy...I finally got you housebroken.
