Well with Nady, Damon and Matsui all pending FA the OF will have to be addressed but if they bring Damon back the bank might be closed.

Source? If someone who covers the sport, then I'm interested in discussion. If it's your cat, don't really care.

the bank is never closed with the yankees. the yankees could field a 300 million dollar team.

Let's see how badly he wants to go there. Think he'll take less than market value to go there?

If Holliday were offered $6m by the Yankees and $18m by the Red Sox I doubt he'd sign with the Yankees. He only "wants to be a Yankee" because he wants to get paid.

The quote....

According to a person in the loop, Matt Holliday's top choices in free agency are: 1) Yankees; and 2) Mets.

link

Is that person in the "loop" none other than John Heyman, mouth piece of Scott Boras? Don't know, but I'd expect something like this from Boras to push Boston's buttons while things are going well for NY.

Posted

Scott Boras definitely is a New York guy.

Oh... I don't mean it's where he grew up, or where he lives.... or that he even owns one of those "I Heart NY" shirts sold in tourist shops.

Nope. But Scott Boras ALWAYS tries to push a client to NY, usually the Yanks. Boras is about the most money.

Nothing earth shattering about that.

When Barry Zito was a free agent, he put it out to Jon Heyman -- a Boras mouthpiece -- that Zito and his dad would like him to be a Yankee. When Daisuke's bidding rights had been won by the Sox and Boras wanted to play hardball with Theo Epstein and even break the posting system, Boras leaked it to Jon Heyman that Daisuke and his wife really wanted the Yankees.

i know i was just saying that he gets a cut. i didn't say that you were wrong just the explanation from your post left a little to be desired.

No one actually wants to be a Yankee

Definitely.

Rivera, Posada, Jeter, Bernie...nah, none of them ever wanted to be Yankees.

They all wanted to be Red Sox. Just like Mo Vaughn, Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez....all superstars on your team who couldn't wait to get the f*** out of there.

Say what you want about payroll, and you're probably right. As an organization, over the last 30 years, don't compare the two. It's embarrassing to your team.

Gom is so defensive, he could be our left fielder in 2010.

OH!

That was a good one. I must admit, I laughed for about three minutes after I read that one.

OH!

Yeah, cuz it sure won't be Matt Holliday

But in all seriousness, Holliday's a great player. I just don't think he's a NY guy and I don't think we should go and spend what it would cost to sign him. If he REALLY wants to be a Yankee maybe he'll sign for the 5 years/$90 mil that he rejected from Colorado...but that won't happen. Other than that let him go somewhere else. I hope the Mets sign him, they could use him. I would only want the Yankees to be involved if he was close to signing with the Red Sox, similar to the Teixeira situation. Lets not forget all off-season I stood firm on saying that I did NOT want Teixeira (but of course he turned out to have an incredible season and now I feel like an idiot as I walk around in a Tex jersey cheering his every AB). Luckily things turned out the way they did though. I think the ALCS would look very different if he ended up in Boston.

Anyway let me stop rambling and get to the point. I don't doubt one bit that he wants to be a Yankee or play in New York. I question his motive, whether it's money or the desire to play for a model organization that has a chance to win year in and year out. I wouldn't be totally opposed to his signing, but I wouldn't be in favor of giving him big money to come here and flop in the postseason as he did this year with the Cards.

seriously, the yankee pie creaming among supposedly heterosexual men is bizarre...

The funniest thing i read on another message board was "Burnett is getting sweaty palms just thinking about (pie) creaming Jeter."

Anyway, all kidding aside !!

As for Matt Holliday...

" I don't doubt one bit that he wants to be a Yankee or play in New York. I question his motive, whether it's money or the desire to play for a model organization that has a chance to win year in and year out. "

BINGO! Money

Why else would Scott Boras -- it's him -- leak to Newsday, that Matty boy has preferences of :

1.) Yanks

2.) Mets

Anyone that puts the Mets ahead of the Cardinals and Red Sox has one thing in mind... and it doesn't start with winning

OK, I know this worked out this year with Teixeira, but a G.M. really shouldn't get carried away with being obcessed with everything the rival is doing.

It's what's the best move for your franchise.

If the Yankees don't need Holliday, they don't need him. But don't get into a habit of just playing "keep-away", it's not the way to operate any club .

Yeah, cause everyone outside of NY is so impressed with their ability to throw truckloads of money to players to get them to play there. Such artistry. Such grace. Such ********.

$16.5m for AJ Burnett? Really?

The historically great Yankees teams would be embarassed about the currently great teams. The 2000's Yankees will forever have an asterisk by their name in many fans' minds, not because they have PED users swatting HRs (most teams do) but because they spend $67 million more than the second highest team. They should win. Honestly, a well run team with that advantage should probably win every single year, and I wouldn't be shocked if they did for the next 5 years at least. I would undoubtedly say the same thing if a team had such an advantage in the NBA or the NHL. It happens to be the case for the team I detest, but I would criticize any team doing that. To those who are rational or who are outside the Yankee's sphere of influence, it is an absurd situation that is not mitigated by the fact that teams like the Mets, Cubs, Tigers, Phillies, Red Sox, Angels, Dodgers and Astros all spend more than $100m each.

Don't bring arguments about revenue sharing. Don't bring arguments about other owners just not having the gumption to spend another $100 million per-year in markets where it wouldn't offer any return. Having teams be "competitive" is in everyone's interest, Yankees included; any financial efforts they make to preserve the facade of competitive balance is preserving the very system they ultimately benefit from. Without a popular league their wins don't mean anything, meanwhile the league is losing interest in cities that never win and have no hope to.

I'm sure I'll be called a hypocrite by Gom, and other fans will say "stop whining". I don't care. It is an irrefutable fact that the Yankees make and spend way more money than anyone else. Whether they are crushing teams during the regular season or eeking out dramatic wins in the playoffs, they always have the advantage and are the heavy favorites. If I were a Yankee fan, I think I would feel guilty about the lopsided way that my team has achieved and would have to be prepared to defend against that argument every time I opened my big fat mouth about how great my team is, and how other people should bow to our dominance.

Hahaha  Did a Red Sox fan REALLLLLLLY just say that?

You better go have a chat with Theo then. I really can't believe you just said that. I don't disagree 100% but that's like calling the kettle black.

And don't hate on the pie man, it's not gay because we're winning! Don't be mad because you're watching two other teams playing for the pennant.

But I think it's funny that you guys really doubt that anyone ever genuinely wanted to play for the Yankees for a reason other than money. I guess the tradition, winning, first class facilities, the big stage, and the fans have nothing to do with it. Sure the money doesn't hurt, and I'm not saying that some players don't wanna come here just for the money, but you hear so many people say how they dreamed about playing for the Yankees when they were kids, when money wasn't on their mind. I find it hard to believe they're all liars.
