Closer Jonathan Papelbon(notes) has been an All-Star for the Boston Red Sox since he came into the league in 2006. He's saved 151 games for the team and is the owner of the record for the most consecutive scoreless innings in the postseason with 26. And now the team is supposedly considering trading him.

ESPN's Steve Phillips said as much in an interview on WEEI radio. He says Papelbon will be used to bring a big bat to Boston, which is good because Jason Bay(notes) supposedly wants to move back to the West Coast, where he has a home in Seattle.

After all, the guy has two more years on his contract and there aren't many good closers that will be available this winter through free agency. If Papelbon does get moved, though, he'll have to choose a new entrance song. He currently arrives at the mound to "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," by the Dropkick Murphys.

I dont think this is saying we will defitantly trade papelbon, but more saying that theo will listen to offers for paps and is making him available for the offseason

Phillips is full of s*** but if it's true' date=' the Sox will regret trading him[/quote']

Maybe.

Depends on what they get back.

Possibly, or we have potentially a top 3 offense in baseball

Um, they were 3rd in the majors in runs scores this season

What have they done against good teams? Our offense was silent the entire postseason except for 2 innings. We lost 8 of the last 9 to the yankees. Lowell Tek Papi are only going to get worse and we may very well lose our best power hitter

I didnt put this in the title but the article also says theres a good chance Bay goes to the west coast to be closer to home. That seriously increases the chances we trade paps by a lot

For the record, I'm not suggesting that we go ahead and trade Papelbon. I never said that. But at the same time I don't think we can blow it off and act like it's impossible to improve our team while trading Papelbon. We have to explore our options and see what comes up. I personally believe that he'll still be here next year, but we can't act like he's a godsend and an untradeable/irreplaceable asset. Then his ego will be justified.

So, instead of looking at a 162 game sample, you're looking at 11 games? Awesome.

Well' date=' they were a pretty important 11 games, no?[/quote']

So do you feel the offense's true talent level was reflected more in the 11 game sample, or the 162 game sample as a whole.

The 11 games. They were an important 11 games against good teams and they failed. Being good over 162 is nice, But scoring tons against s*** teams don't matter when you face the important ones and are getting shut out or beaten by 1 or 2 runs.

More importantly, the complaint was about the offense. However, the offense wasn't the reason they lost all 8 of those 9 to the Yankees. So his support of his original point invalidated his complaint. Lack of focus, FTW.

Clutch doesn't exist.

I trust the FO to make the right decision re: Papelbon. They won't trade him for nothing but if he's not going to re-sign with them before he's a FA they should move him. The choice is Papelbon's. He's already left a shitload of money on the table by not extending himself through his pre-arb years, and I'm starting to think he dropped his splitter and disregarded his slider to save his arm so he's available as a FA. I can't blame him, but I don't think it is great for the Sox to hold onto him if that is the case.

I don't trust that Jason Bay want to move to the West Coast so he won't be fielding offers from east coast teams. It may be one factor among many. CC wanted to move to the West Coast too..

If you freely admit to placing more significane on the smaller sample size, I think we're done here.

What?

Oh well, this team got on base a lot and the offense "kept moving" and in the end that is just as good as a ring or even a playoff victory. B)

Nice strawman.
