No, not quite, but the kind of sure thing that everyone thinks we need to acquire is more myth than reality.

Remember, in 2005 we got bumped out of the playoffs even WITH Manny and Ortiz at top form.

You can stack the odds in your favor, but the rolls still need to fall your way.

The Sox have an attitude that they can turn it on when they need to. Limp into the playoffs and we'll start playing ball when it matters.

I don't believe that's the formula for success.

Tito, why in the f*** do you even think it's a remotely good idea for Lowrie to pinch hit for Gonzo?

There is no correct answer to this.

THIS.

I don't think so. Not unless Drew' date=' Bay, Youkilis, Ortiz, Pedroia and Martinez realize that the playoffs have started.[/quote']

I guess we'll just disagree on that, but like many Boston fans who were/are convinced the Twins will find a way to blow it against the Yankees, as a New York fan I am convinced the Angels will find a way to blow it against the Red Sox.

Because Alex Gonzalez is an offensive superman and it makes no sense at all to rotate out underperforming hitters and there's anything to lose seeing what the bench can do?

Even last night with f***ing Kotchmann for Gonzalez... it's seriously f***ing dumb. Gonzalez has been awesome for us all around. Kotchman and Lowrie, for lack of a better term, suck.

St. Louis begs to differ.

Your logic states our bench should pretty much be pinch hitting 1-9 right now.

Your logic is stupid.

Sorry

You might wanna wait until the awesomeness that is Brian Fuentes actually gets 3 outs to call this a ballgame.

Just sayin'.

There's a distinct lack of blowing it going on.

If this was a 7 game series I would be in the front line arguing AGAINST too much panic right now, but I just don't feel like we can count on this team for miracles.

Here's a sobering statistic.

That 3 run inning all started with the walk to Vlad. In 2009, he walked exactly 19 times in 407 plate appearances.

For players with over 400 PA's, there were only 3 players who had less. Dionner Navarro (18)m Cesar Izturis (18), and Delmon Young (12)

Wow. I'm going to go vomit, then cry myself to sleep.

Honestly, how much worse could they possibly do? At least some of those guys might feel the had something to prove.

Bottom line is you don't take your most talented players out, who may or not be slumping, and may or may not break out of it at any time, and let a bunch of bums TRY (I stress TRY) to hit in their spot.

I still think the roster is good. the problem is the bats we do have decided to go cold at the worst imaginable time.

No one goes anywhere in the playoffs when SIX of their starting 9 have one or fewer hits.

To be fair, I doubt people could have predicted how dismal Ortiz would have been for a large chunk of the season, or that Daisuke would be as terrible as he was. Without the pitching injuries/implosions especially, the need for Tex wasn't really there.

I look forward to the 'SOX COULD HAVE SIGNED TEX BUT CHOSE NOT TO AND NOW LOOK AT US THEOS A DUMMY' thread when the Sox are eliminated.

Pretty much.

Just repeat after me people.

"Whatever we offered for Teixeira, the Yanks would have gotten the opportunity to match or beat and they would have done so."

Very true.

Our roster is good, the good players just aren't performing up to par.

I'd like to see Dusty draw a walk here and there.

But you can't draw a walk if they're throwing you strikes.

"And, he wanted to play for the Yanks anyway."

What it comes down to people, is that a very good team with excellent fundamentals saw the matchup coming for months, scouted us extensively, found an approach that worked, and executed it well.

what the rest of this series will boil down to is whether or not we can respond and adjust on the fly. If we can, we've got a chance. If they continue to expoint our weaknesses it's over.

The balls he swung at over his head and in the dirt weren't strikes, even by CB Bucknor's standards.

I don't actually believe that. that's sour grapes.

What IS true though is that once Giambi hit free agency, the Yankees had a hole at 1B and the best available free agent 1B by a mile was Teixeira.

Beyond any gamesmanship with the Sox, the Steinbrenners genuinely wanted Teixeira themselves. Keeping him away from us represented what might be called a pleasant bonus.

Whatever the reason, it was obvious to anyone who was paying attention that Mark Teixeira was a MAJOR Yankee offseason priority and what's more, he SHOULD have been. It made too much sense to NYY to get Teixeira for me to have any real hope that they were going to let us beat them to the guy.

But Dojj, you gotta admit the lineup and the pinch hitting moves smack of not hurting certain players' feelings. That needs to change in game 3.
