I don't buy Matsuzaka's success in big games. The team is 6-1 when he pitches in the playoffs, but for most of those you can point to the bullpen or offense as a bigger reason for the victory than Matsuzaka. He's had one great postseason start (Game 1 of the 2008 ALCS).

4.79 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 1.94 K/BB. That's his postseason record.

You can make a case for both guys, but I don't think postseason success is a good reason.

I didn't say that he was great in post season. He's far from Schilling, but he does consistently keep the game close and give the team a chance to win. That has to be weighed in his favor. We have no idea what Buchholz we are going to see in the playoffs. Will it be the one with the deceptive change up that the batters can't resist or will it be the guy that gives up 3 or 4 jacks in 3 innings and takes your team out of the game. In an elimination game, I'm not willing to take the risk. I'll go with the guy who has a track record of keeping the team in the game.

If it's 1-1 or the Sox are up 2-0, are you more comfortable with Buchholz?

In the playoffs' date=' you take your shot to win. I don't think Clay gives them the best chance to win an elimination game. You don't turn your back on the best chance to win in order to get someone some experience for future seasons.[/quote']

And Dice-K isn't even our best chance to win, is the great thing about this.

So you wouldn't give Buchholz the start, who at the very worst is slightly lesser of the two, even though it may pay dividends in 2010, 2011, 2012.... good to know.

Seniority is not the factor. Big game experience and success in big games is a factor. Plus, he had the hot hand in the final month with a 2.22 ERA. He's got the experience and he's in the grove. Clay is inexperienced and in a rough patch. Not a tough decision. Doji agrees with you.

Completely f***ing ridiculous. By what straw-grasping figment of the imagination is two stinkers in two completely meaningless games, after 8 of 9 quality starts (that actually took place in meaningful games)? Why haven't you addressed my point about focus and pressure being directly related? Why the hell do people like Rivera and Papelbon have most of their bed-shittings when they're actually ahead and pitching in a non-save situation?

Because it completely nullifies this bogus, blind argument about experience always being better and Dice-K having the hot hand because he pitched 4 good games, and Buchholz being in trouble because he struggled in two meaningless games at the tail-end of the season after several good starts.

Honestly, this like bitching about spring training performance. Which if it benefited the older, ruff-n-tuff ballplayer guy and helped slam the young pup, you probably would.

What Beckett will we see in the playoffs? He gave up 15 runs in two starts back in August. What if he comes back? Its a possibility. Just look at the start of the season! Or 2006!

What Lester will we see in the playoffs? He pitched horribly against New York, a team we could be seeing again. He also had a s***** start to the season. That Jon Lester could come back. COULD HAPPEN.

Now that your hostility has surfaced... again. Go f*** yourself.

Except there were no personal attacks. Just combative posting in an argument that Clint appears to be pulling out of.

Another win for me.

Characterizing someone's argument as "completely f***ing ridiculous" is hostile, but I guess bi-polar people can't understand that. You really should pass accounting before you can even think you can match wits with me.

Wait, its clear now.

Your arguments come from you, just like your kids. You treat them similarly. So me calling your argument stupid is like me calling your kids stupid...

Actually its easier to just call you delusional.

Generic 'U GOT NOTHIN ON ME YUNG PUP' comment.

You are as dumb as a rock. My tax dollars will be supporting you until the end of my days.

Tuff call here, if it were in Los Angeles id go with Clay just to keep the 10,000,000 NewEnglanders awake come midnite, Dicek has been pitching well and Clay had a good 2nd half too.
