I want Pitt. That would be an emotional series.

So you'd rather play a team light years more talented than Philly, just to have an emotional series, while foregoing a potential series with a team with no goalie and without Carter and Gagne for a bit, plus home ice?

Ummm, what?

Hmm, let me think. How has this team played when it's the top dog vs. when it's the underdog? Which series will inspire the kind of emotion that this offensively stunted team needs in order to win?

Statistically I know what the answer is, but this is the one sport of all sports where statistics are the least meaningful. When you couple the first round win with the possibility of being the favorite, there's too great a risk that the team just becomes "Happy to be here" in the second round against PHI and you get a risk of a repeat of the CAR disaster of last year. Learn from history guys. That's what this team is, it needs adversity, and thrives on it.

Unless Carter and Gagne are out for the entire series, I really do like my chances against PIT better. I don't want to give this team a chance to lean back and breathe. I think that will signify the end of the run. I want to pile tough odds on top of tough odds because that's the only way these guys are going to keep motivated.

Besides which.. yeah, the Canadiens are really going to win a critical game on the road against the #1 seed team? They've put up a great fight, but Halak would have to repeat last night's performance for his team to have a prayer here, and I just don't see it, so I'm gearing up for what I think we're going to get.

Montreal won't beat Washington. And the Bruins Philly would be nothing like the Bruins playing Carolina last year. We were a 1 seed vs. a 6 seed last year. This year both teams were neck and neck till the end of the year and it would be a 6 vs. 7. I don't know how you drew that comparison

Savard was cleared for game action. Does anyone think he will actually help all that much?

He'll be limited to specific situations and whoever we play will no doubt be verrrry physical with him.

That's funny, they've already beaten Washington two other times this series without Halak having to deliver the performance he gave last night. I still consider Washington the favorite tomorrow night but for anyone to write off Montreal as having no chance is just being foolish right now.

??? all 3 games he's been the key reason they won

In game 1, not really. The team played very well in front of him after the first period. In game 6, he was strong but I thought the Habs did a good job of limiting rebound chances and honestly, I didn't think the Caps were all that good in game 6. But last night was a complete robbery of the game by Halak after the first period.

If Carey Price would of been in net this entire series, it would of been over in 5

that's how good he's been

game 1 he stoped 47 of 49 shots

game 5 he stoped 37 or 38 shots

game 6 he stoped 53 of 54 shots

that's pretty damn good , he's clearly the reason there still in this

Now the question is , can he keep it up

I just don't trust this team in any situation where they might think they got the "easy" road.

Thing about Philly is, people were waiting all season long for them to play the way they did in the first round. If they're finally hitting their stride, they're as dangerous as anyone.

first off, Dojji, you're absolutely insane...odds are the EC winner has to go through Pittsburgh regardless, so I'd rather have it be in the conference finals.

second, there is no correlation between this years team and last years whatsoever, and you can look at the guy in goal as the primary reason. this team simply plays better in frnt of Rask - Recchi said as much in an interview on WEEI last week. Called Rask the best young goaltender hes seen (paraphrasing). For a guy who played with Cam Ward during the Canes cup run, thats impressive.

third, the Habs ca absolutely win tonight's game. Halak is arguably the best goalie left in the East (maybe over Rask) and he can absolutely steal one.

Go Habs Go

I'll be rooting for them to win the game, but that's too tough for me to say a phrase like that.

Will be pulling strongly for the Habs...Pittsburgh has too much O to want to face them in the conference semi's. Philly's goaltending is always suspect and I like that matchup for the B's who are offensively challenged.
Posted
If we expose Philly's goaltending that makes them more likely to be a customer for Timmeh. The virtues of a Philly-Boston trade matchup sending Thomas one way and a veteran scorer the other have already been discussed so I'll say no more on that. If Thomas' final legacy as a Bruin is to bring Simon Gagne to Boston, that'll be a fitting end of his tenure IMHO.
Posted

This was a rumor coming from the Philly Flyers' own sources BS21 -- not even from Boston's.

Thomas is one of the better "available" goaltenders in therms of SV% and GAA this year, only RFA Jaroslav Halak is clearly better, and you know Halak will cost more talent.

The contract in raw dollar terms is roughly appropriate for a player of his skill (equal or superior statistical goaltenders tend to get paid a bit more, actually). It isn't inconceivable that someone might send us an equally expensive veteran back who would fill a hole for us (read: Gagne) if Thomas represents a sufficiently significant upgrade (which in Philly, he would).

Philly is also one of the teams Thomas could realistically consider suspending his NMC to go to, since they're playoff contenders.

Posted

I agree with Dojji that Thomas can be moved ( JS Giguere got moved this season, that's evidence enough)...but I do not want them to take Gagne back. They need to clear cap room for Lucic's bump in salary, and whatever Colborne/Caron/Hall-Seguin/Sauve and whomever else they need to resign (Wheeler, Stuart, Seidenberg)

I think the only way they can do that is by trading Thomas and Ryder, and not take any big contract back. Will be tough.

Posted
Honestly, there's a problem with that. Would Thomas even accept a trade that basically dumps him for nothing? Bit of an insult to him, and he's never impressed me as the kind to take an insult lying down. Besides which, if you can get a return that improves the team it's incumbent on Chia to go to get one, even if it's jut a third round pick.
Posted
I didn't say trade him for nothing. Isaid trade him for something that isn't another expensive contract. I wouldn't be shocked if the return is only a 2nd or a 3rd round pick.

We got our wish, home ice. Both teams are physical and seem to be goal scoring deprived. But the Bruins have the huge goal tending advantage. We are playing our best hockey come playoff time, but so are the Flyers. If Savard is truly coming back then we have the edge. I'm saying Bruins in 6. The B's were 3-0 last series at home, so this is huge.

It'll come down to the goaltending. If Boucher is playing well the Flyers can make it close. If he isn't, this will be a short series.

Of course, there's a third option, that the Bruins can play so badly they MAKE Boucher look great. But let's not dwell on it.
