Exactly' date=' and even so Gonzo's hitting like .280, so for 2009 it's irrelevant. However, every other year it isn't.[/quote']

Piece of advice.

Do not use BA or RBI as the main stats to support an argument about offensive value.

Thanks.

Not to mention inaccurate ones, he's hitting .234 this season, look it up, do some research before posting

Honestly?

What? This is his career high, and his career average is .247, not to mention he hit .210 in more at bats before coming to the Sox this season. He hasn't proven anything, and like said before me, BA is an incomplete stat. (Thank you, Dojji)

OBP

His OBP is .303.... Not great but not awful....

Just be happy you have a great defensive player and he has been decent offensively for us this year! Have you not seen some of the awesome plays he's made at SS for us this year?

Anything under .330 in the OBP department is God-awful.

He can catch it, but he shouldn't be the starting SS on a contending team.

This FO's modus operandi has them looking to be above-average at every position, it's the mark of a championship team, and AGon is not an above average player at the 6 position.

Hardy is a great defender as well, not to mention he blows him out of the water offensively. Also, like CD says, that is a pitiful OBP, sorry

Honestly?

He is batting .290 for us this year and I don't care what he's done offensively for other teams... I care about what he's done offensively for the Red Sox<_ src="//d1mqtyoopj0gsc.cloudfront.net/emoticons/default_wink.png" alt=";)">:)

Small Sample Size.

He said this season, and I corrected him, because that is about .050 off of his real batting average, which is very significant in my book. He simply can't hit, I think we've shown that

With just the Red Sox he's hitting much higher than that.

*sigh*

Batting average sucks.

A .303 OBP is GOD-AWFUL.

I for one like batting average. I know there are other stats besides it, but batting average is still generally looked at in my eyes.

Well, all I have to say is Gonzo has not stopped impressing me. I think he might cool off, let his average drop, but he's still batting well daily.

What's wrong with Batting Average?!

It's mostly a useless, luck-dependent stat?

For BA to be of any use, it has to be backing a real offensive production indicator like OBP.

I don't believe in luck when it comes to BA, but that's just me. Still, I agree that OBP is still useful.

But there's always the fact of getting on base and not scoring runs when they count. I don't think OBP is everything, but it can often be useful. I'm more of a small ball type guy.

BABIP.

Check that stat out.Come back. And tell me if luck doesn't play a factor in BA.

But that's the stat for a pitcher, not an individual batter.

Dipre is right. Batting average isn't a great statistic to look at. OBP tells you all that you thought you were finding out by looking at batting average, plus some other stuff.

The offensive goal for teams like the red sox is not to get HITS. The goal is to not make outs. The team has 27 outs to 'spend' throughout the game. OBP is ones ability to not make outs. Batting Average is merely a representation of some percentage of struck balls that do not make outs. OBP represents plate control and discipline. AVG includes good hits and s***** hits, half-errors, etc.,

It isn't just a matter of opinion by people on these boards that AVG is a less than useful stat. It is pretty much conventional wisdom around baseball that AVG is overrated.

Nope.

There's BABIP for every hitter.

It fluctuates wildly from year to year, just like BA.

I (for one) feel it would be more useful to just give an explanation about why batting average or OBP are useless/useful, rather than sending people all over the place when someone asks a question. I would think that coming to a board like this and asking is just as good a way to find out as any. :dunno:

Actually, i wanted to illustrate the fluctuating wildness of both BABIP and BA, sir.

My statement came off as 'snarky', to say the least. Sorry.

I was just thinking that actually describing it to him would be better than letting him dig himself deeper with confused points that miss the target.

Well that's when i was going to explain "in-depth" but wanted him to get a handle on the numbers.

Listen, AGon has played amazingly sense he came back to Boston. So I say we leave it at that.

I would bet, know one on here thought he would be hitting .300 and playing all round as good has he has. If he keeps this up, I love our chances even more.

He's on a nice hot streak. Much Like Nick Green was earlier in the year. Enjoy it while it lasts but never make the mistake of depending on it indefinitely.
