I knew it from the start. I can't say how much I love bringing back Alex Gonzalez. He's been sensational. He's not only played the stellar defense we expected him to, he's also hitting like .280 or around there. This was a great deal. A-Gon may very well be my favorite player on this team at this point right now.

He has been very good for us this year.

His Offensive stats for the Red Sox this year:

.290 BA, .303 OBP, and a .770 OPS

That's solid, not very good offensively. He's been what we expected defensively and better than what we expected offensively, so yes, good deal.

Easy Tonto. He has been above average with the bat. The expectation were so low for his offense it just seemed like he has been great. I've always said, with Agon, if you get any offense at all it's just a +. He was brought in to sure up the D at SS.

I'm not sure what the defensive metrics say, but Gonzalez is clearly a more confident fielder and his confidence seems to have positively impacted the pitching staff and rest of the team. Unlike with Green, I feel confident moving into the playoffs with him as this team's SS.

If I recall, his bat wasn't so bad with us in 2006 either. People act like he's a horrible hitter. Sure, he's not the best hitter, but he's decent and has shown it this year. He has been everything we could ask for him. I'd even take him for another 2 years after this one if needed. That's how great I feel he's been.

Gonzales is a stopgap, not a long-term solution.

You're having an unreasonable knee-jerk reaction.

He hit .255

I don't know what your standards are, but I consider "not bad" to be around .270, .255 being quite poor

Not to mention his .247 lifetime average, and that he was hitting .210 before he came to us this season

Yeah, I didn't consider .255 as that bad. I'd consider .245 or lower as bad, but .250 is still ok with me if you put up stellar defense with it. With a .250 average, you can still offer some offense.

75 OPS+ disagrees.

I'm sorry, but hitting in the .250 range is bad, the lower range being terrible, and what you consider "bad" (.245) is pitiful. You offer... Strikeouts? Almost every team averages over .255, in fact only 4 teams average under .255 this season.

I disagree...I think a .250 batter is acceptable as long as they are a good defensive player (Like Alex Gonzalez). A pitiful BA is .240. IMO

OBP.

I agree. And Gonzalez' OBP is dismal.

Gonzalez has been refreshingly not totally sucking with the stick. Anything you get there is a bonus. But let's not mistake him for an actual decent hitter. And yes, given the choice I would take a stab at trading Delcarmen for Hardy (our talented underpefromer for yours, classic trade premise)

I'd fly DelCarmen to Milwaukee myself.

.299 OBP for the year in question, .271 this season total, and his career OBP is .293

To put it bluntly, he sucks offensively

Who cares about offense when someone is that good on defense? HE HAS A .290 BA for the sox this year, he does not stink offensively!

Take a look at the quote. His defense has never been in question, but just having a glove isn't going to do anything either. Good-to-great offense will be taken over good-to-great defense, which is why I support trying to get Hardy

Hardy is a very good defender making the downside of acquiring him fairly low.

His UZR/150 is actually better than Gonzo's.

Exactly, and even so Gonzo's hitting like .280, so for 2009 it's irrelevant. However, every other year it isn't.

What? This is his career high, and his career average is .247, not to mention he hit .210 in more at bats before coming to the Sox this season. He hasn't proven anything, and like said before me, BA is an incomplete stat. (Thank you, Dojji)
