My bad - when you said "right" I thought that was sarcasm/disagreement.

Oh, not at all. Obviously, the one thing that you always have to be worried about is whether or not he is going to jump ship, but unless that happens, I expect them to be a top team for awhile.

If Saiban left it'd be for a contender, and I don't think any of the big dawgs would be willing to take him if he jumped ship on another team like that, so I don't expect he'll be going anywhere anytime soon.

He's got a great thing going, and it doesn't get much better than college football at Alabama. Can't see him leaving for a long time.

Certainly hope so. I've been spoiled lately with my sports teams, not only with current success, but with future potential for success.

No kidding. Yankees, Giants, Alabama... Knicks? NY Rangers?

Not really a hockey fan, but a Knicks' fan. I guess everything can't be perfect.

If LeBron signs with the Knicks this summer, I'm going to let you pick some lottery numbers for me.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, one of my good friends is a Bills, Knicks, and Cubs fan. He has the Red Wings to offset those three, and UNC in college, but that's a pretty terrible trifecta for sports success right there.

Haha, yeah, I really can't complain about my sports' teams. Three championships in the past three years is pretty decent lol.

This got no national media:

Rich Brooks retires and Joker Phillips takes over at the university of kentucky.

That's why.

It's football, not basketball.

University of Kentucky Basketball is the Roman Empire. University of Kentucky Football is like... The State of Kentucky.

In Kentucky, basketball and football may be of similar importance, however throughout the country, people know and care about Kentucky basketball, whereas the Kentucky football program is nowhere near as good (and not that good overall) so their football program has limited national notoriety.

UK football has a lot of tradition such as:

  • The all americans from the 1st (Clyde Johnson) to the latest Trevard Lindley
  • The 7 OT win
  • The win over LSU and UL in 07
  • Coaches from the legendary bear bryant to rich brooks

Of course a lot of bad things has happened in UK history but I don't feel like naming them :(.

Perhaps, but it has nowhere near the history and prominence of Kentucky basketball. Besides, can anyone here besides Suns name players on the UK football team?? I can name some on the basketball team but I couldn't name a single player on the Kentucky football team. Plus I didn't know/care about any of the items that you listed above.

There are football schools and there are basketball schools. Very few, if any, are perpetually good at both. Kentucky is clearly a basketball school. (And a damn fine one at that)

Texas is usually good at Football, Basketball, and Baseball.

That's why I said there are few. I'd contend that Florida is another. I just didn't want to name them for the inevitable result in me missing a few, and I didn't want to inadvertantly offend anyone by accidentally forgetting a school.

I will be the first to say that I don't follow college baseball, so I don't know who's good and who isn't, considering that baseball and college sports aren't cared about in the UK. I think it's an anomaly enough that I enjoy baseball. It's not cricket but it's a bloody entertaining sport nonetheless.

I like cricket, but it really depends. There's a 20-20 version, which is essentially cricket with a "pitch count" so matches only take a few hours. I think Americans will find that entertaining (if they have learned the rules)

Test cricket on the other hand has an unlimited pitch count and plays until the entire team gets out, and is played in 8 hour days for 5 days. And if everyone on each team isn't out by that point, the match ends up in a draw. I'd avoid watching this kind of cricket.

I'm a big rugby fan as well, but I actually play the sport so it's entertaining on a different level. I'm not big on "soccer", as I just treat it as a drinking sport. I love the World Cup though. My point was that baseball and college sports aren't particularly followed over here. For example, we have Oxford vs. Cambridge rugby, football, and rowing, but that's about it. The other universities do play each other, but nobody really cares about that unless you went to either Uni. There's nothing like Texas vs. Alabama hype over here.

yeah here in the south (maybe the rest of the country too but I don't know) College sports is big, we all love our professional teams but there's just something about College sports, I watch Army vs. Navy every year and it reminds me why college sports is so great.

Posted
I think that's everywhere. In the north, that's certainly the case as well. I assume almost everyone has some sort of pride in their favorite nearby school.

It's not that the north doesn't have college pride - it's just that in the south, I think it's taken up a notch when it comes to college athletics, especially football.

Posted

Well, Minnesota's pretty different. We have pride in the Gophers, just because they used to have a history of winning. They don't anymore, but the atmosphere is crazy. We just haven't had a team that's won anything besides the Twins in about forever.

I don't think you can say that college athletics are "taken up another notch" in certain areas, because in reality, any team that has any success usually has a very strong atmosphere at the games, and it helps even more if you're a big school. University of Minnesota football isn't as big as it used to be, because we were an Empire 50 years ago, and now we're a laughingstock.
