Last night, I received an email from Ian Bethune over at Sox & Dawgs with some shocking news out of The Boston Globe front.

The Globe's Chad Finn reported in his media column on Thursday that colleague and New England Patriots' beat writer Mike Reiss will be departing the Globe and joining ESPNBoston, the sports network's second city-specific site.

Reiss joins Marc J. Spears, who recently left to join Yahoo! Sports.

The first city-specific site to launch was ESPNChicago, which debuted in mid-April. The Boston site is scheduled to be active on Sept. 14.

The national network is trying to make a local brand for itself, and it will also be competing with the Globe's online website, Boston.com, as well as WEEI.com.

Globe editor, Martin Baron had this to say about Reiss, who joined the staff in July of 2005, after serving on the Metro West Daily News:

"We're very sorry to lose Mike Reiss. But talent runs deep in our sports staff. We'll draw on the other great sports journalists who work here, and we'll bring in some new talent, too."

Interesting.

Along with Reiss, whose sole focus was the Patriots, is Christopher L. Gasper. Does this mean Gasper will be promoted to Patriots' beat writer, and another writer will be brought in?

Will the other name be a big ticket one? And if so, would Gasper be bumped?

ESPNBoston definitely did its homework though, and recruited the right guy to provide in-depth coverage of the Pats.

So with Reiss leaving, does this mean his blog, Reiss's Pieces will go with him too? Obviously Boston.com will have to change that.

Just another day in the world wide changing sports media industry and, not surprisingly, The Boston Globe.

Wow. Definitely disappointing. :( Reiss was easily the best, most informative writer at the Globe. I only read Boston.com and that's where he stands out. Sad to see him go, interested to see ESPNBoston. Plus, the Globe is just about to collapse. It's DONE. They can't support themselves much longer.

His new home is http://espn.go.com/boston/

The loss of a pats beat writer isn't the death knell for the Globe.

Not only this but the Celtics beat writer Marc Spears. They're financially unstable right now and the NY Times (their grandfather company) is not backing them up because of it.

yea, its not as if the Globe would crash if Amalie Benjamin left

I thought Reiss was the best writer in Boston covering the Patriots. I understand the Globe and the NY Times will be pay sites in the near future. I know the Globe is having money problems and cutting staff.

Reiss is a definite upgrade at ESPN.

Reiss is the best and most credible pats beat writer....i wish him the best with ESPNboston. This just means i don't have to go to the globe anymore.

If f***ing ESPN's poaching him for his valuable insight' date=' I doubt he's a huge loss.[/quote']

Do you read his stuff? He's very, very good.

Pete Abraham, who has been a beat writer for the Yankees, is joining the Boston Globe in two weeks to cover the Red Sox. In my opinion, he was the best beat writer the Yankees had.

Saw where Gom said that too. Is he going to jump right in and cover the playoffs? That would be kind of odd.

When does Mike Reiss officially go to ESPN Boston?

Yup, according to his blog, he'll be there in two weeks. You guys will enjoy his work, and his blog which is updated regularly.

I used to get the Globe delivered back in the 90s but canceled around 1998.

I picked up a copy a few weeks ago and was stunned by how badly their sports section has gone down hill. Their sports page was about 4 pages long and boring and dry as all hell.

The Heralds sports section blows them away. And Ive actually checked out the ESPNBoston site and I must say, its pretty good. Better NESNs site (which is where I used to go).
