Do you go for Lackey and try to re-sign Beckett? Or are you cool with having a 3 headed monster of Beckett-Lester-Lackey and then letting Beckett walk after 2010

I think the Sox can sign both Lackey and Beckett.

I'm a little worried about Lackey's recent injuries. We should be in on him sure, but I don't think we should offer him anything market-setting.

I'd put the chance that Lackey re-signs in Anaheim as high.

the Kazmir trade essentially sealed the deal for Lackey. He is not going back to LA

I don't see the Red Sox paying top dollar for Lackey. He wants AJ money, which being the top FA SP he will probably get from someone. That's too much for him IMO. If the Sox add a front line SP, it will probably be through trade. Anything else I could see them filling with a 1 year deal with Sheets/Bedard/Harden/Duchscherer.

So essentially continue to fling crap against the wall and hope it sticks?

That strategy worked real nice this season.

When the Sox had an historic offense' date=' what a coincidence![/quote']

And it sure as hell didn't work with the bullpen.

Of course, parts of that offense fall under the "throw crap at the wall" category. Particularly a certain DH.

We got to the playoffs with a pretty string-and-duct-tape rotation in 2005. I don't think looking for redemption projects to put in the 5 hole and the bullpen is really the same as "throwing crap at the wall" anyway. Especially since we're not really counting on them for much and have some half-decent prospects to slot in if they fail.

the point is it has not worked for the pitching staff' date=' ever.[/quote']

You mean you didn't think Frank Castillo, Brett Saberhagen, and Rich Garces rounded out the staff with Pedro to make the four horsemen of the apocalypse?

and yes, I did just use the word "rounded" as an action verb after Rich Garces.

Well, we certainly are in a better position than we were when Dan Duquette was signing anyone with a pulse and low contract demands to flesh out the middle of our rotation. Unless we're certifiable enough to actually deal Clay Buchholz we're really just figuring out who fills the last rotation spot and the last couple seats in the bullpen.

in one thing in duquette's defense he did sign Manny. just one good thing otherwise he was horrid.

Without Duquette's contributions to the franchise, there's no WS title in '04 so don't act like word Duquette means Satan in "Bahstahn"-speak

Peter Gammons on WEEI in Boston:

- Says he doesn't expect or envision how the Red Sox could do much this offseason.

- He says maybe they'll add Ben Sheets.

- Doesn't know why the Yankees would want Jason Bay, or the Angels, so thinks maybe the Red Sox give Bay what he wants.

- Thinks Bay maybe is a better hitter than Holliday.

god, i hope Gammons is just really senile and guessing.

Ugh. Exactly the news I did not wanto hear. Depth is nice but how about we go after some quality for a change?

I als love the continuous preaching of payroll flexibility. Like last offseason, flexibility doesn't do anything for you unless you use it. Sox seem content on bring Wake back for cheap money and signing a couple of retreads, when they cold sign a guy like Lackey instead.

We’re probably not going to end up with a front-line free agent starting pitcher with the way we look at the market and the nature of the market these days. Could we end up with another buy-low, high-upside, low-risk starting pitcher somewhere on the roster? Sure. And if it doesn’t work out, we’ll move on.

So much for Lackey.

I guess at least they have some pretty talented guys to buy low on this year. I suppose Harden and Sheets are the best of the bunch.

It's that time of year, to talk about which injured pitcher the Red Sox will sign as their primary offseason addition :stop: (let's bring Baldelli back for the outfield too..... lol):

What a hot stove buzzkill. I hope they were joking about going after Mark Mulder. Sheets and Harden are good options for a 5th starter, assuming their arms are still attached in October. Sheets would probably be cheaper, since he missed all of last season.

How many NL 'project' pitchers do we have to go through before something finally clicks?

At least one more:lol:

Sheets is also much more riskier. Id prefer going with Harden
