Red Sox To Listen On Matsuzaka?

According to Nick Cafardo at the Boston Globe, you can expect the Red Sox to listen to offers for Daisuke Matsuzaka this offseason. There's a hope Matsuzaka will right the ship and return to success after injuries this season to help his trade value.

Matsuzaka's recent comments criticizing the team's rehab process might have been too much for him to have a place on the organization. Cafardo wonders if the team underestimated "the cultural and philosophical differences that would lead to a constant butting of heads." Matsuzaka would have to sign off on any deal, but indications are that he would okay a trade.

Cafardo also talked to a GM who said that Matsuzaka should draw interest from teams, as the Red Sox have already paid the enormous posting fee (over $51MM), his contract is otherwise reasonable, and because the Sox have a good history of taking care of their pitchers.

Seems I'm not the only one to see something possibly happening:D

Nobody's gonna want to deal with that contract. And we wouldn't pay all of it. We have him until Obama's term is over and we're just gonna have to deal with that. It was a bad decision and we were silly as fans to expect him to be the second coming from Japan knowing very well the history of Japanese pitchers.

Daisuke is still useful when healthy. I think if he can get his shoulder back to form that we will be pleasantly surprised next year.

A huge part of his problems in the States stems from the fact that his fastball topped out at 92-96 in April of '07 and has steadily declined to 87-91 this year. When you lose the power on your heater, you get hit and when you get hit, you nibble. It becomes a bit of a chicken an egg question which was first, the loss of power or the nibbling.

If he can ever get his fastball velocity back up to the steady 93 he was throwing first half of '07 he'll be an ace again.

I wonder if Nick Cafardo was an altar boy in Hingham with Sean McDonough.

It appears that we're prepared to eat 1/2 DiceKs posting fee to watch him pitch elsewhere.

We're like the United Way, paying players to perform elsewhere has become Theos best attribute.

8M a year for a mid to top rotation(if healthy and not being a dumbass) is not very much.

I more or less put the article up to show Kilo and Dipre I'm not the only one thinking Dice-K could be moved:D I won't mind if they keep and try and work through the issues they have.

I agree. I see him being desirable to a team in a large Asian market. San Francisco and Seattle come to mind.

Of course he has to be healthy and show some results for any team to pay $8. mil a year.

DiceK has zero trade value right now because he's not healthy.

Also, if Nick Cafardo agrees with you, it doesn't say much for your argument.

A couple of points... We would be dealing from a position of weakness... so given what we could expect in return, we're much better off with DK... As far as Seattle as a potential trade partner?... Never happen as long as Ichiro is "The Man" there... (it's a culture thing)...

We've seen this year how quickly pitching depth can evaporate... All things considered... we're much better off working things out with DK. (imo)

:lol: I've been waiting for that all morning.

I wouldn't say he has zero trade value. Peavy was traded with an injury. Brandon Webb would probably still bring in something of value if AZ traded him this off season. I'm not comparing these guys on the field. More just it's not unheard of to trade someone coming off of injury.

I agree spud. Seattle and San Francisco would be ideal landing spots for him.

Best case scenario is he's healthy and pitching decent and has excepted the Red Sox ways. His stuff is great. It just drives me mad the way he pitches. Probably more so because I can see him being dominant if he would change his approach.

2nd best scenario, he comes back healthy pitches decent and the Sox could move him for something of value.

worst case scenario, His shoulder becomes a problem, and we are stuck with a thick headed Mark Prior for the next couple years.

Cafardo is an idiot, and if you're using his dumbass ideas to back up your crazy notions, then you're honestly not doing much.

Peavy and Webb have proven it in the Majors for years, and have won Cy Youngs.

DiceK has not.

So his 18 wins and 3 something ERA from last season mean nothing? And 2007? Hasn't that been one of your arguments for keeping him? What''s you cut off for "proven"?

Last 2 seasons,

Dice-K 33 W's, 3.6 ERA 371+ IP(AL East)

Webb 40 W's 3.2 ERA 462 IP(NL West)

Peavy 29 W's 2.6 ERA 406 IP(NL West)

The numbers are comparable. Obviously Peavy and Webb's number are better. But if you take into consideration the leagues, I think it is reasonable to think they would be somewhat closer.

He wouldn't command as much as those two probably. But he could still land a decent package. Or maybe a really good player if prospects are added in.

I'm not using him to validate my theory. I was just saying I wasn't the only one to have this thought. Doesn't mean either of us are right or wrong. Maybe we have the same source:lol:;)

Health:

He does not have it.

And seriously?

Comparable to Webb and Peavvy..............Ok then, buddy.

No, this simply means you're not the only crazy/illogical person around.

Are you really this dense?

DiceK should be kept because he has had success in the AL East and has been a "maddeningly" effective pitcher for the Sox when he is healthy. However, when he is not healthy, he is not an effective pitcher and therefore does not have any trade value.

In essence, you are saying "DiceK is comparable to Peavy and Webb, except when they are not, and DiceK wouldn't command as much in a trade as those other two.

Fantastic.

I really see no point in moving Dice-K. Unless we're able to sign a top pitcher in FA this offseason, or maybe swing a Halladay deal, I don't think it's a very smart move. Someone like Lackey, or even Bedard would be perfect, asuming they reach the market.

I think Dice-K has trade value, you don't. Agree to disagree. And we move on to the next topic we disagree on;)

Seriously, the whole "Sports_Writer_X" is an IDIOT" schtick gets a little sere when universally applied.

The only way i could claim "victory" is if you would seriously stop with the douchebag comments.

As such, victory will never be mine.
