He'll give him the opportunity to get the win. I don't agree with that mentality. Team wins' date=' not individual wins are important. I think youngsters need to learn to weather adversity, but I don't think there is anything to be gained from letting him take a beating. I might give him one more inning to give him the opportunity to exit on a positive note, but sending him out beyond that is just asking for trouble.[/quote']

I wouldn't agree with this philosophy either, if it were true. I don't think it is. I think he'll send Buchholz back out there because there is no obvious long relief option and Clay battling through this (with another 7 run lead) is both a sign of confidence and a chance for Buchholz to work himself through it.

I don't get any impression that Francona is the type to make decisions based on personal statistics rather than team success.

What was hiding was the O's pitching staff. We just needed to see them.

The truth.

It's right here.

Your pessimism is totally not contageous.

I think this team, with Victor Martinez batting 3rd, is a much better lineup and is much more balanced than the same team last week. The O's pitching sucks, but this lineup will be formidable against anyone.

NYY up 7-4 now. One of the few times I've used the 2-game screen mlb.tv option. Useful.

C'mon Clay, I'm rooting for you.

I think he and just about every other manager tries to get their starters a win. I'm not picking on Tito. They all do it.

Buchholz leads a charmed life. He should pitch his way out the bullpen before he starts again. His numbers aren't there to be starting.

It'll get tested this week. That's for sure. It's a much better offense when VMart plays for Tek, but when Lowell sits, it is not that big of an upgrade.

Not to the detrament of the team though. In this case, with a new 8-run lead I think the choice is a no-brainer. If you don't then I don't know what to tell you.

Would you rather put in MDC, then Saito, then Bard, then Oki?

It's hard to believe Clay has allowed 6 runs in this game. That top of the fourth kind of made me forget it.

Youk is disgustingly hot right now. he's made an out ONCE in this series

That, and the power.

Multiple HRs in the series, and we might see one today.

the big key with Buchholz to me is he needs to speed up his work and just trust his stuff. he overthinks way too much

I'd send him out for the 5th so he could leave on a positive note. I made a mistake in my prior email, because I lost track of the innings due to the snail's pace of this game. I wouldn't send him out beyond that, because I don't think he has it today and you'd just be inviting trouble.

I think every inning offers a fresh opportunity. Pitchers sometimes have horrible innings, all pitchers do that. If he's able to come out and command his stuff and get outs when this team needs it then they should keep going to him. The ability to battle back after a tough inning will be important throughout his career and there is no better time to let him plow through that than when the offense is producing against a crappy pen.

Let him get to his 100 pitches or so and take him out. He's at 68 now.

Wasn't Reddick wearing glasses yesterday? Does he normally wear contacts?

Clay looked better. Maybe the long break helped settle him.

At this point Buchholz is just trying to not walk guys and to throw the ball over the plate.

How his ERA will ever get below 4 again this season is a mystery however.

7 runs and counting. Give him a shower after this inning.
