Gonna hurt to lose Reddick. We'd better sign Bay or that could really bite us in the butt. It's a price worth paying but Reddick's a key part of our future to be going for a rental of Cliff Lee.

Red Sox Not Close To Deal For Cliff Lee

By Eddie Schmid [July 28 at 5:40pm CST]

5:40pm: Well isn't this ridiculous. Rob Bradford at WEEI tweets: "I have not reported anything. Somebody is hacking into my account."

5:26pm: Rob Bradford at WEEI reports that the Red Sox are close to a deal that would net Cliff Lee from the Guardians for Michael Bowden, Josh Reddick and another prospect. Stay tuned.

I'm really pissed off now' date=' finally a deal I actually like(d)[/quote']

That should have been the first clue that it was BS:D

It was stupid not to jump into this deal to get Cliff Lee. V-Mart is overrated, but it would have made sense to get him with a great pitcher (one that is cheaper than Halladay). Now there is no point IMO to sign V-Mart. He single-handedly won't help this team. Cliff Lee would help us so much. Too late now.

Cliff Lee is a lot less awesome than Roy Halladay, and would have required a comparable package to whatever we would be trading for Halladay. Philly getting Lee is also awesome because it sticks a fork in a lot of Ricciardi's leverage if he really wants to move him.

Lee was a more tenable option than Halladay. Philly will tell you that. Epstein has a habit of aiming too high at the trade deadline--and getting nothing. They need a reliable no.3 starter right now, or they may fall out of the race. Lee could have filled that for less than Halladay.

I don't like the Halladay situation because he might not be traded, or they might deal him away from the AL East. Nobody in the media has mentioned the disturbing trend lately of shipping star AL pitchers to the NL. Santana, Haren and now Lee. Maybe Halladay next to the Dodgers.

Theo didn't play his cards pre-season to correct the weaknesses. He has to play his cards now, though the needs have changed somewhat.

Actually Epstein has come down with something at the deadline every year except for 2006 if I recall correctly.

In 2004 we had the Nomar trade, I believe we got Graffanino in 2005, in 2006 all we got was Bryan Corey. The Gagne fiasco hampered us in 2007, and in 2008, we said hello to Bay.

That said, Andy LaRoche could easily be seen as our "deadline" acquisition this year.

*Heavy sigh*

Really dude?

You bombarded us with why we should trade for LaRoche for more than 2 weeks.

Now you can't get his name right?

Unless Theo is really going after Halladay then I'm disappointed he didn't make a bigger push for Lee. The Phillies have three top 25 prospects in their system and another pitcher in Happ that has high value and they traded NONE of them. Seems like Anderson, Bowden, and say Kalish would have gotten the deal done from our side which would have allowed us to keep Buchholz and have a rotation of Beckett/Lester/Lee/Buchholz/Wakefield.

I thought that implied he didn't spell his name right or something.

It implied mixing the names up.
