Red Sox "Desperately" Want To Move Lugo

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 16 at 12:37pm CST]

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports hears that the Red Sox are trying "desperately" to move Julio Lugo now that Jed Lowrie, Mike Lowell and Clay Buchholz are about to return to the active roster. The Red Sox won't have room for Lugo anymore, so they're looking to trade him. They've been trying to deal him since last year to no avail, so Rosenthal hears the Red Sox could simply release Lugo if they don't find a match.

Lugo makes $9MM this year and the same amount next season, but he's underperforming so the Red Sox would have to pay most of his salary in any deal. While some teams seek middle infield help, it's doubtful that Lugo would appeal to many of them.

leave it to Rosenthal to report "news" that could just as easily come about by sheer common sense
What's next from Rosenthal... an article titled: "Red Sox looking to increase earnings."

or "Red Sox interested in locking up Bay long-term"
IMO that is a much less obvious move than getting rid of Lugo. If the Sox win the Championship or he has a bad second half or any number of other things happen, they might let him walk. Wanting to get rid of Lugo is a lock.

Agreed, if the sox win it all and Jason Bay wants fairmarket value he best look elsewhere.

The front office can hang their hats on 3 titles in 6 years, think that wont effect who they sign and for how much?..If they win they owe us nothing and also have the knowledge that with all this young pitching we're going to be competetive for the next 5 years no matter what...How f***ing lucky we've been without having any of these young arms injured?

Id still like a legit shortstop and another lefthanded bat.

What's "fair market value" for Jason Bay?

Rosenthaul is such a douche. Sounds like he got the "obvious" stick shoved up his ass last night. He does great reporting sometimes, then he brings this s*** to the table. Drives me nuts.

Rosenthal and "great reporting" are mutually exclusive, at least when it comes to his current job, covering the sport of baseball. I'll allow it might happen if he were to provide updates on the goings on in the Shire.

I think the really amazing thing about Rosenthal is the ingenious ways that Foxsports have to muster to actually have him appear while he's covering live events and interviewing, because, you know, he's like 4'2.

interesting stat

the Sox are 11-16 when Lugo is in the lineup and 42-15 when Nick Green is in the lineup

That's only when they start and it isn't predictive of anything.

The funny thing is Lugo's greatest moment and achievement in Boston was the error of another player (Mother's Day Miracle)

I would have thought it was the .385 BA and .962 OPS in the World Series, but what do I know? :dunno:

He was the starting SS for the entire 2007 season. He was not a bench player. He played the most important position on the field other than pitcher. He played the position consistently well that season, probably the best fielding year of his career. He also did hit in the post season. When he slumped and was booed, he took it like a man and made no excuses.

I agree there. He came up big when we needed him the most. That being said the ball has to be caught at the SS position. He no longer does that. And by some strange reason he does, he airmails the ball or short hops it there. It's the the point I cringe whenever the ball is hit to him.

No no no, you've got it all wrong...

According to a source familiar with the situation, the Red Sox have designated Julio Lugo for assignment. The Red Sox will have 10 days to assign Lugo's contract to another major or minor league club, whether it be via trade or through waivers. Lugo is finishing the third of a four-year deal which pays him $10 million per season. Lugo is hitting .284 in 37 games with the Red Sox this season.

I don't really care about what he did in 13 ABs against a Colorado team that had god awful pitching. Again, good riddance

Agreed, we win that series handily whether he tears it up or goes 0 for. Glad he's finally gone.
