Hinske to Yankees for minor leaguers

NEW YORK -- Former AL Rookie of the Year Eric Hinske was acquired by the New York Yankees from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday for a pair of minor leaguers.

Pittsburgh will receive right-hander Casey Erickson and outfielder Eric Fryer for the utilityman. In addition, the Pirates will give the Yankees cash.

The 31-year-old Hinske hit .255 in 106 at-bats this season with nine doubles, one homer and 11 RBIs, playing right field, first base and third base. He was 8 for 24 as a pinch hitter and said to be unhappy with a lack of playing time.

Through June 29 last year, he had 13 home runs en route to a 20-home run season with the AL champion Tampa Bay Rays. He won the rookie award with Toronto in 2002, when he hit .279 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs, and was a member of Boston's World Series championship team in 2007.

The 23-year-old Erickson was 3-3 with a 2.25 ERA in three starts and 18 relief appearances at Class A Charleston this season. Fryer, also 23, hit .250 with 11 doubles, two homers, 24 RBIs and 11 steals for Class A Tampa after leading the South Atlantic League with a .335 average last year for West Virginia. He was obtained by the Yankees in February for left-hander Chase Wright.

To fill Hinske's roster spot, Pittsburgh said it will purchase the contract of 28-year-old outfielder Garrett Jones from Triple-A Indianapolis, where he hit .307 with 18 doubles, 12 homers, 48 RBIs and 14 steals.

I assume he'll just filling in for ARod at third when he misses his weekly game. Beyond that, I don't see a use for him cause I don't fear him as a left-handed pinch hitter and I don't think anyone else does either

Might as well give them the ring now. Theo can't compete with this...

:D

Seriously though, The Yankees thought they needed a body and that is what they got. I may eat my words, but Hinske has not done much since his rookie year. He was a bust with the the Sox, as I recall. That in itself implies that he will have a great year in the Bronx!

He hasn't had a good year since '06 and he's a butcher at third. Perhaps A-Rod's hip isn't feeling all that well either? He's been cringing on routine throws lately.

It would be interesting if the yankees made it to the WS. Has a player ever been to 3 consecutive WS's with 3 different clubs?

That being said, we gave up nothing. Fryer was a guy we got for Chase Wright who has shown the ability to walk, thats about it. And Erickson was a late round pick in 2006 who was repeatedly passed over by better prospects.

It's nice to know the Yankees gave up nothing of value. My question is how do you see Hinske contributing in a pennant chase?

Really? He seems healthier now than he has at any point since he's come off the DL.

He certainly wont be playing a vital role. I just think of him as an insurance policy for a few positions. For Damon in LF if need be, for Matsui at DH and for ARod at 3rd. He's not great, but I do think he can hit a few into the yankee seats in RF when needed. He offers something that nobody on our bench can offer. Power.

Jack Morris did it! He might be the only one.

He's slugging .368 with 1 home run in 106 at bats. Andy Pettitte has a higher SLG% and Josh Beckett has as many home runs.

He didn't do it on three different teams.

Sure he did. Tigers in '84, Twins in '91, Jays in '92 and '93.
