No he will not. He will hit .500.

Is he taking hitting lessons from Chuck Norris or something?

Posted

No, nyet, non, for a couple of reasons..stay with me here:

(1) Elton John told Mauer he’s the best catcher in the major leagues and said he wished Mauer and Morneau played for the Atlanta Braves, of whom John is a big fan.

OK, when Elton John says you're his favorite "catcher" there is something horrifically wrong going on...guys like that don't hit .400, although they make great florists.

(2) After having a good game Mauer said:

“It was one of those nights I was seeing it well, ... Maybe it had something to do with Jacque moving behind me. "

Hmmm...his fixation with guys moving behind him and his affiliation for pickle smooching pop stars will foil him.

 So wrong.

Something to keep in mind: Chipper Jones was also batting .400 around this time last year.

No one in the majors will hit .400 this year. He'll hit about .330-.338 at best. He hasn't had enough at bats this season to reasonably project that he will produce Williams type numbers.

^ Disagree on the .330-.338, I think he hits over .350. It's not like he's coming out of nowhere, he's a #1 overall pick and has been one of the best catchers in the game for a few years, and now is the best. One thing that's odd is his power surge--he's already matched his career high for HR at 13. Also, his BABIP is near .450, which is basically impossible to uphold.

You have to sustain a .400 BABIP or higher to have a prayer of batting .400 though. That or hit an incredible number of homers.

I can't argue or disagree. As always, I just don't have the numbers to support a rational argument. .350 is possible. Much over that is unlikely based on what I have seen over the years. He's not exactly Rod Carew. The kid is a stud, no doubt. But I don't see him being a one in a generation hitter.

Carew didn't win his second title until age 26 and then he won 4 in a row. Mauer won his second title by age 25 and is on his way to two in a row. He is an unbelievable hitter. He's such a great hitter that I would get him out from behind the plate before injury and wear and tear erode his hitting skill. I would love for the Sox to sign him as FA to DH.

Look, you all are way more on top of the statistics of the game than I will ever be. I mentioned Carew because he is the best hitter I ever saw play. Mauer is, apparently, a prolific talent. I hope he hits .380-.400. I just don't see it happening. Not because he doesn't have the talent, it's just not (statistically) likely to happen.

By the way, Tony Oliva was pretty good too. And, I'd LOVE to see Mauer in a Sox uniform.

he will do it' date=' there is 0 doubt in my mind, f*** the haters[/quote']

Care to elaborate, my statistically challenged friend?

I don't think it's impossible, i just think there's a very slim chance.

He'll hit over .370 IMHO though.

How many ABs will get him qualified? If it's in the 480-500 range, he probably won't qualify.

You're kidding, right? The sandard to qualify for a batting title is actually less than 400 if memory serves.

1 for 4 yesterday' date=' now batting .425[/quote']

Based on only 160 AB. The highest his ba has been is .347 in 2006 (600 PA).

It would be cool to see him hit .400 for the season. It's just not likely that he will sustain such a high average as his ABs pile up.

I don't know what it is, because I don't care about batting titles. When I looked at B-R, who typically bases their qualifications on how the awards are given out, I noticed that Guerrero wasn't on the NL top-10 for 2003, despite hitting .330, which would have put him in the top-10. He only had 467 ABs that year.

Again, I don't know the answer, but it wouldn't surprise me if your memory blew goats.
