It turns out, Miguel Sano is considered the top prospect and the Yankees are said to be very interested in his proceedings. Right now, the reports have the Pirates in the lead, but the yankees have been working him out over these last few weekss, we'll see.

As it turns out, the yankees are expected to sign catcher Gary Sanchez. He's a consensus top 5 free agent coming out of this group and also considered to be the best power hitter of the bunch.

Wagner Mateo is another big ticket OFer who is also considered a top 5 prospect. He has been linked with the yankees since his name came on the radar and some scouting services think he'll end up signing with NY for $2.5-3 million

Another outfielder by the last name of Pimental was linked with the yankees. But recently, NY placed a grievance with Texas on Pimental's behalf. It is now believed that the Rangers will be signing Pimental, although the grievance is still pending. Apparently, the Rangers held onto Pimental for more than 2 months in their facility which is a rules violation.

The pitching market got weaker as a righty by the last name of De Paula was suspended. He was a guy the yankees and sox were battling for. Throws mid 90s with a good changeup, but it turns out he altered his birth certificate. MLB instituted a new rule requiring a 1 yr suspension on signing for players who alter their BC. Turns out, De Paula is 18. He'll still be a hot commodity next yr, though.

Update: 6/13/2009

Gary Sanchez has one suitor at this point, the New York Yankees. He is a 16 yr old kid with a strong, powerful frame and great tools. He is a plus to plus plus power hitter who has just annihiliated balls in workout sessions. Apparently, his power displays are things of beauty. What sets him apart, though, is his advanced defensive game at catcher as a 16yr old. He has shown agile feet in workouts and has advanced mechanics in the throwing game from behind the plate. He is considered the second best IFA available to Miguel Sano. The Angels were in on Sanchez, but they just fired their dominican coordinator and have been out of the negotations for some time. Sanchez is expected to sign for over 2 million dollars.

Miguel Sano is coming to the Yankee complex on Thurday. He is considered to be close to signing with Pittsburgh, although his agent says nothing is finalized (obviously, because that would be a violation). At the same time, his agent admits that the yankees have been in on him since the beginning and may end up outbidding the pirates depending on what they see. Sano is a 6'3" SS who is very quick, has good hands and is an incredible hitter. He is the consensus #1 prospect coming out of this international class. His detractors say he's older than 16 and that he uses roids, although an investigation of his age came back clean.

Sounds like Sanchez is in the bag. They are also in on a few others, but these are the big guys. If they nab both, then its a big coup for them

The Yankees have come to an agreement with Gary Sanchez on a 2.5mil bonus. He is a power hitting catcher with advanced defensive abilities as a 16 yr old. He is more of a true catcher than Jesus Montero is, who most people agree will likely end up at 1b or LF. But Gary is not Jesus with the stick, while he is much advanced compared to his other 16 yr old compadres, he doesnt have the advanced approach or the contact skills that Montero had at his age.

The signing was confirmed at $3mil. Gary Sanchez, the consensus top 3 player in the INTL market and the best catcher has been inked. He has plus power, a plus arm and plus mechanics. Should be a very solid catcher for us.

We also signed Christopher Cabrera, a tall, lean right handed pitcher who tops out at 94mph as a 16 yr old. He is expected to add some more heat as he fills out.

And we rounded out the class with Damian Arredondo, a speedy SS who signed for 850K. He has a solid glove and a 6.4 60 time as a 16 yr old. His bat will have to come along.

The yankees continue to be considered players for Sano, although it seems like more of a longshot right now. We are also in on an OFer by the last name of Fuentes, who has been hitting the piss out of the ball in yankee camp.

Rumor has it that Sanchez will be sent to the GCL next week, something typically unprecedented for a 16 yr old. Most 16 yr olds sign contracts for the following yr, but the yanks like Sanchez enough to start him off ASAP. That's pretty cool.

When does the GCL season start? April? How many games do they play and are they 9 inning games?

Do they use DH? Thanks Doc.

*Is Jacko*

It goes from June to August, they play 60 games, not sure about innings/DH but I would assume 9 and yes, respectively.

EDIT: Beaten to it.

So I can't call him Doc?

Thanks for the info on the GCL.

He must be the next Jesus Montero!

He could be. That being said, the person propagating that rumor was Kiley McDaniel, one of the BA writers. Turns out he was completely wrong as no 16 yr old can play in the GCL unless their 17th bday occured sometime during the season, which Sanchez's doesnt, so he was wrong

Wow, it's incredible how many "elite" prospects the Yankees have. Matt Weiters and David Price, move aside!

Hmmm, strange no one but you's mentioning how elite they are though. Everyone else must be biased.

Actually, no. There are plenty of publications talking about Gary Sanchez. He's considered one of the top 3 players available this INTL FA period, hence why he got 3 mil to sign. Listen, Dutchy, you should possibly look deeper than the Herald and the Globe for your news, especially about minor leaguers. Otherwise, you'll look like an idiot in a few yrs.

You.are.an.idiot.

Just because he's a highly touted international free agent doesn't make him an elite prospect. Call me when a Yankees prospect does decently in a league that matters.

Turns out he wasn't 16. The deal is voided.

I think Sano has indeed passed his inspection. I'm actually surprised the Yanks and Sox aren't more in on Sano really.

I know. Especially Boston since they just spent 8 mil on a kid with nowhere near the talent that Sano has. Granted, Sano has a long way to go and is likely a 3b, but that being said, Sano is a great talent

Yeah, that move by Boston was perplexing to me, but you don't just dish out $8 million for the heck of it. They know what they're doing, they must have seen something in the kid. Maybe a mechanical issue with his swing. They've done wonders with some guys.

I agree' date=' they seem to know what they are doing and they must see something the scouts dont.[/quote']

Then again, who knows. They did sign Julio Lugo :D

There is a rumor over at scout.com that the Yankees have the highest bid in on Miguel Angel Sano, rumored to be as high as 3.8 million dollars. This is not confirmed. Also, the age testing that MLB did on him was pretty in depth. Stool, blood and bone scanning has left his age as indeterminant. They are unable to prove or disprove that he is 16, therefore, it is up to MLB to make a decision on his eligibility.

Correct me if I am wrong, but haven't scouts compared his glove to Ozzie Smith?

the guy the sox signed scores an 80 on the 20-80 scale. He scored below average in both power and contact, but above average in speed. He is essentially a light hitting, good speed, defensive whiz. He is essentially Ramiro Pena. Would you pay 8 mil for Ramiro Pena?

I believe that's a bit misleading. I believe he's signed for $8 million but over a few years, not $8 million for one year.

Lol ok.

Yep. Pena is an 80 out of 80 on the glove side' date=' above average runner and below average contact and power. Sounds exactly similar[/quote']

Sure.
