He's "terrible"? Over his career the split is .840/.760. One is better than the other, but the other is above average, which is a far cry from terrible.

You are big on these "trends", so long as it's someone on this team trending in the wrong direction or someone on your team trending in the right direction. I don't recall any "trends" as Pedroia or Youkilis got better over successive years. No, it was, "they set career highs that aren't sustainable". Funny how that works.

EDIT: Spudboy, it's cool if you aren't that into stats, but do not listen to this guy if you are interested in learning more.

It's not that I'm not into stats, I just don't know about them the way you guys do. It's interesting. I have just been a fan of the game that has used his seat of the pants, so to speak. Jacko's O.K. He is biased (as we are, largely) but I enjoy his contribution to the thread.

I love baseball. Most of the people on the board are interesting in their own way. That aside, I continue to learn new perspectives on the game.

Lets look at his post ASB OPS's over the last 4 yrs

2008- .643

2007- .890

2006- .739

2005- .693

3 of those 4 are under the average he put up for his career.

Hip injury

Career Best Year

Regular Year

Career Worst Year

Any questions? This took 10 seconds to answer.

EDIT: This is why Spud should not listen to your version of statistical analysis. The numbers are factual, but the conclusions reached are very self serving.

Their chocolate glazed donuts are the s***.

Oh yes! That and the Nuclear Strawberry frosted! And the Boston Creme!

Just walked in door' date=' nice to see a W, how did Lester and crew look?[/quote']

Lester tapdanced through machine gun fire. 10 baserunners in 6.1IP but only 1 run. He got about 6 inches off the outside corner and used it when he needed to. He was smart tonight.

Re: donut shops - People like Starbucks and Peet's around here. I don't think we're very into donuts...muffins, brownies, and cheesecakes maybe. I can't think of any donut chain that does really well overall.

So, you'd say he was lucky, right?

He was lucky. But he also was smart when he needed to be. He got a lot more fine when there were runners on base. And he absolutely abused that outside corner once guys got on base.

Sounds a lot like a LHP that takes the ball for the Yankees every five days.

Tap danced? He did have the benefit of a wide zone. His "command" was not excellent. And he had some innings where he let too many men on-base. BUT, he did not implode. Sox won.

You, sir, just earned +10 awesomeness in my book.

While Jacko earned his daily +10 douchiness.

And btw, if the ump is calling 'em, you better keep pounding that area of the zone, i didn't the lover of Yankee ballsacks complaining the game that Chamberlain got a 3 feet of the outside corner against us.

Jacko, every time you make a post like that you lose credibility and make Gom sound like he's right about you. so you should be careful about downtuning the bias in your posts, sir.

I made no comment about it being bad. Lester was smart. When you see that you have 6 inches off a corner' date=' you use it. He did. Good for him.[/quote']

Oh no.

Don't change your stance now.

You meant it in a way that would undermind Lester's performance.

Grow a pair.

Lester was lucky indeed' date=' and Ramirez wasn't that great either. Still, a win's a win.[/quote']

Was it luck or his ability to adapt and to learn? Let's all hope he can continue to be lucky or at least smart enough to get by with mediocre stuff.

P. S. I trust you had a good time at the old ball yard. You may have missed the evening's most interesting moments with some twerp named Johnny Damen's Penis. He appears to have been banned, thankfully.

do you mean undermine? No' date=' I did not intend for it to downgrade his performance. I meant it as a compliment to him once he figured out he was getting it.[/quote']

Undermine indeed, little mix-up there.

Anyways, as Bosox stated, had it been Sabathia you would have been proclaiming it as a performance for the ages.

Good game by Lester. The AL East is a very tight race indeed. I kind of wish the Yankees and Sox would be playing now. Both teams in high gear.

YOTN is at the game too. If BOY was smart' date=' this is his night. God help us all![/quote']

Nostradamus in the house.

Obviously he still lurks here all the time. What a f***ing loser. Sorry about nobody really being here for a while, I'll be present at game time for the next few games.

if Sabathia put up that line' date=' jacko would be calling him DOMINANT, ABSOLUTELY DOMINANT[/quote']

Would he have rated it a 9?

Thanks BoSox21. I've been following baseball since 1966. It seems that only recently have these terms become prevalent. So much to learn. I love this game.

Until the book Moneyball came out nobody really paid attention to them much outside of Bill James and a handful of other Sabermetricians. A good read the presents a different take to finding things to take advantage of the game. Plus, it lets you in to what Theo is thinking as he goes along those lines more so than traditional baseball numbers.

With the exception that the entire premise of Moneyball is incorrect, the book is a fun read.

You also must think Dave Concepcion should be in the Hall of Fame...

Pretty powerful statement there. Care to explain?

that is complete fallacy. I would have said about Lester exactly what I said about Sabathia after his 5.2IP 1ER 11 baserunner performance against KC. He got the job done. It wasnt pretty, but he got the job done.

I dont think you understand the premise of moneyball if you are saying it is incorrect. The premise is to emphasize an undervalued trait. At the time, OBP and defense were not highly valued. Now, they are.
