I'm not surprised but extremely bummed. I know some of you don't like him. But he and Orsillo are a great team as far as I'm concerned. Things haven't been the same without him in the booth.

Good luck Rem Dawg!

Remy is battling cancer complications

Before last night's game against the Cleveland Guardians, Red Sox play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo stood alone in NESN's broadcast booth at Fenway Park. Orsillo began the telecast with stunning news about the protracted absence of his broadcast partner, Jerry Remy.

"Many have asked about my partner and friend, Jerry Remy, and tonight we learn the news," Orsillo began. "Jerry will take a leave of absence for an indefinite period to recover from cancer surgery."

Orsillo read a statement from the ailing Remy, 56, who had missed six games already. A former smoker, the color commentator underwent surgery for lung cancer late last year. Remy had hoped to return for the start of spring training but was forced to miss most of it when he developed an infection that led to pneumonia.

"I want to focus on completing my recovery so that I can return to work without distractions or disruptions," Remy said in his statement. "I hope that disclosing my bout with cancer will reinforce the dangers of smoking to every member of Red Sox Nation, especially children."

Remy, the Somerset native who spent 10 seasons in the major leagues, including seven with the Red Sox (1978-84), has become a fixture in NESN's broadcast booth after coming aboard in 1988, when he was first paired with Ned Martin and then Sean McDonough.

"As part of the NESN family, we want Jerry to concentrate on his health and getting well," said NESN president Sean McGrail. "When he's ready to return, his place in the booth will be waiting for him. In the meantime, we ask everyone to respect Jerry's privacy so that he can focus fully on his recovery."

A fan favorite, Remy has been teamed with Orsillo since 2001, winning four Emmy Awards and being named Massachusetts Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 2004.

Remy was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006 but holds a special place in the hearts of Red Sox Nation, not only as its colorful color commentator but as its "president."

"Jerry is beloved, and on behalf of everyone in Red Sox Nation, I want him to know that he is in our thoughts," said Sox chairman Tom Werner. "We will sorely miss him in the broadcast, but the most important thing is that he takes all the time he needs to recover."

Remy experienced a setback in his recovery when he arrived in St. Petersburg, Fla., last Thursday for a four-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays after working a three-game series in Cleveland April 27-29. He did not work during the Tampa Bay series, replaced in the booth by, among others, Buck Martinez of TBS.

Dennis Eckersley joined Orsillo in NESN's booth for last night's game and is expected to serve in that capacity for the remainder of this homestand.

NESN studio analyst Dave Roberts, the former Sox outfielder, will travel with the team and provide color commentary during the West Coast trip to Los Angeles and Seattle May 12-17.

"To my booth partner and friend, Jerry Remy," Orsillo said in his pregame remarks, "we hope you get back to right where you're supposed to be - right here in the NESN Red Sox booth."

Get well soon Rem Dawg!

I enjoy Don and Jerry for commentary during the game. This season MLB.com finally has the away team feed so I get them every game now.

Eckersley(sp?) isn't too bad a fill in though.

Here's to hoping he pulls through. Lung CA is never a good thing. If caught early' date=' it is curable. But that is rarely the case. Hopefully his was.[/quote']

I've seen it 5 times in my lifetime, most recently (6 yrs ago) with both my parents and it's a tough thing to beat. I too hope they caught it early, but unfortunately, as you've so accurately stated, that generally is not the case with LC.

As Red Skelton would say..."may God bless"

Here's part of a message he posted last night on SawxHeads.com:

In November I had a very small, low-grade cancerous area removed from my lung. I was fortunate that it was discovered at an early stage. Except for the surgery, I required no additional treatments. I left the hospital with a clean bill of health.

Unfortunately, following the surgery, I developed a bad infection further compounded by a case of pneumonia. It was the pneumonia and the infection that set me back. This all happened just as I was leaving for spring training.

In hindsight, it was a mistake to go and I am paying the price for it now . . .

So that's good news...

Remy gets the call for tomorrow

By Chad Finn

Globe Staff / August 20, 2009

Jerry Remy, the popular color analyst on NESN’s Red Sox telecasts, will return to the booth tomorrow when the club begins a series against the Yankees at Fenway Park. Remy has been on an extended leave of absence since early May as he recuperates from the effects of lung cancer surgery.

Remy, 56, will ease back into his role alongside play-by-play voice Don Orsillo. For the time being, he will work on a part-time basis in the position he has held since joining NESN in 1988.

“I’m anxious right now just thinking about it,’’ Remy told NESN’s Tom Caron before last night’s game. “But I’m sure once you get back into the swing of things, after an inning or so it will be just like old times, and we’ll have hopefully a good game and a little bit of fun.’’

Former Red Sox players Dennis Eckersley and Dave Roberts, who were among the 26 fill-ins NESN used in Remy’s absence, will continue to pinch hit for Remy in the booth while also contributing analysis to NESN’s pregame and postgame studio programming.

Last November, Remy, a longtime smoker, had surgery to remove what was described as a “very small, low-grade cancerous area’’ from a lung, the knowledge of which first became public May 6, the day he announced his leave of absence.

But concerns about the former Sox second baseman’s health were raised as early as spring training, when his arrival was delayed by what was later revealed to be a bout of pneumonia.

He also suffered an infection shortly after the surgery, and it became clear to Remy as the first few weeks of the season passed that he was neither physically nor mentally ready for the grind.

He has not broadcast a Red Sox game since May 30 in Tampa Bay, an absence of 91 games through last night, and the private Remy remained out of the public eye during his recovery. But last Wednesday, he made his first visit to watch a game at the ballpark since taking leave, receiving a standing ovation from the Fenway crowd when he visited the NESN booth in the second inning.

During a meeting with the media that night, he spoke openly about his battle with depression that delayed his return and said he is receiving therapy.

“I’m glad I did it [return to Fenway last week] because it really kind of gets that out of the way and when I do come back on Friday to do a game, it’s just a normal day,’’ Remy said last night.

“The Yankees being in town, obviously that’s a little bit different, but to get all this personal stuff out of the way I think was a great thing for me last week.

“But it is a little bit uncomfortable. You know I’m not a player, I’m just a broadcaster. To have that much attention put on you, it means people care about you.’’

He's battling depression, something every resident in Massachusetts and every member of that 78 team has done once or twice, thankfully drugs and alcohol has cured a lot of us.

I dont know if he can sway this teams destiny by coming back this year but it cant hurt to have him back for Fridays game. There will be no homer hankies on Friday, there will be no rally monkies Friday, there will be no hotdogs racing linguica's and brauts on Friday but there will be 36,000 people with a common purpose and I suspect these people will be very receptive of the little guy from Somerset coming back from a disease that has hit probably every single person in the ballpark once or twice.

Billyboy works out with Eck over here at Golds gym,he claims hes hung like a church mouse and he spends 45 minutes on his hair after he showers, of course Billy likes to prance around all the locker rooms in town bare assed showing off the tatoo of his mom and his pierced scrotum.

His wife ran off with his best friend and roomate, Rick Manning (OF) when he was in Cleveland. It's probably the main reaqson why he got traded by Cleveland, because it was not a good idea to have those two guys in the same locker room. Manning was obviously able to deliver the high hard one that Eck could not.
