Oh. Did the NYY win that game?

Yeah, they've won both of this starts, but he didn't really have too much to do with it. He was better in his first start, but the fact that they're going to seemingly rely on Mitre as their fifth starter for the foreseeable future is a huge problem, in my opinion.

As I stated in another thread, I'm very disappointed they didn't acquire a SP.

Thome singled to give the White Sox a 4-3 lead in the 2nd inning. Maybe we can flip Kotchman for Thome?

I like the idea, but Chicago thinks they can compete.

Besides, where would Thome play?

So many stupid mistakes. Horrible game to be at.

-Cano not covering second base on Beckham's sac-fly in the 2nd inning.

-A-Rod briefly stopping on Matsui's two out double in the 3rd inning.

-Posada throwing through on the double steal in the 7th inning.

-A-Rod trying to stretch his single into a double in the 9th inning.

Have to score one for Gom tonight. Posada, on back to back plays in the 7th inning, was really horrible.

With all that being said, tonight is on Sergio Mitre. It's not like I expected anything more, but this is the issue the Yankees are going to have to deal with.

You can find comfort in the fact that Smoltz matched every last bit of suck that Mitre gave the Yanks tonight.

Haha, thanks, although I cannot find comfort in the results of both games.

I'm thinking Cashman was smart not to make a play on Washburn to be honest.

What's your reasoning?

Simple.

Washburn is an extreme flyball pitcher.

Flyball pitcher + Yankee stadium are the two main ingredients in the recipe for disaster.

Yup, and he wouldn't have the awesome OF defense that is Ichiro and Franklin Gutierrez (who just might be the best CF in baseball right now).

Part of the reason for Washburn's numbers was having an OF of Gutierrez, Ichiro and Endy Chavez.

Goddamn, now that's a trio that can catch the ball.

True, although I'm going to disagree with the premise that they were smart not to acquire Washburn.

Washburn is a lefty, which should help in Yankee stadium. But, more importantly, the drawbacks to Washburn do not outweigh the positives that he would bring, if you consider the Yankees situation. The fifth starter is Sergio Mitre, and they do not have a solution in AAA or coming off the DL. The fourth starter is Joba Chamberlain, and considering he appears to be coming up on an innings limit, his status is uncertain.

Obviously I don't really know what the Mariners were asking for, or what ownership was willing to do in terms of taking on salary. However, in theory, bringing Washburn aboard makes sense in my opinion.

And now that FG is starting to you know, actually hit?

.356/.396/.556/.952 line in 97 July PA?

Makes my pick of him in AFL even more awesome.

I am concerned about Aceves. He has been quoted as saying his shoulder is tired, and I cannot blame him since he seems to pitch every day for multiple innings. That being said, his first inning where he got out unscathed saw some of the hardest and longest hit outs I have ever seen. Then he went on to get tattooed in his second inning of work. We need to get him right, even if it means a trip to the DL or an extended rest. It is good to see Robertson in some important innings, and even though he took the loss, he looked pretty darn good. Melancon has also looked better of late. We need to find a balance with Aceves. When he feels fine, we cannot just run him out there at a ridiculous workload.

Regardless, the pen isnt my issue. You cannot expect to win when your starter gives up 5 runs over 3 innings. That needs to be rectified. If he doesnt show improvement in his next start, I'd be okay with optioning him and bringing up Igawa. Hell, at least Igawa gave a few more innings with his suck.

He has done an excellent job for them. Girardi seemed to go to him for multiple innings for an extended period, and he kept them in a lot of games that the Yanks came back to win. I would not be surprised that he is burned out. I have been expecting it. Coke has to get fatigued soon even though he usually pitches only partial innings. Girardi has him warming every game and hi pitches in almost every game.
