According to his brother, Joe Dunand, Alex Rodriguez will undergo surgery Monday on the cyst on his right hip and could be sidelined until May.

MLB.com reports that Rodriguez will likely "spend two weeks in the hospital recovering before he can return to the field" and has dropped out of the World Baseball Classic. Infield is the one area where the Yankees lack depth and right now Cody Ransom and Angel Berroa would seemingly be the leading in-house candidates to replace Rodriguez at third base. The team could look into signing a veteran free agent like Ray Durham or Mark Grudzielanek, although neither player has seen time at the hot corner this decade.

"...could be sidelined until May."

This, somehow, translates into "out until at least May."

Interesting, to me the "could be" reads as the worst case scenario, whereas "at least" suggests the best case scenario. But, that's just me.

Either way, the ARod shizz-show this year should be fun.

and while people keep talking about the offense the defense is going to suffer. Mainly b/c Arod has the most range out of any 3B in the Majors which allows Jeter to cheat to 2nd. Now Jeter range is really going to be tested

I agree wholeheartedly, since a lot of the defensive "deficiencies" a lot of people (including myself) claim A-Rod has at 3B, upong closer inspection are found to be the cause of him fielding balls that he would have no bussiness getting to if Jeter played adequate D.

This is where a veteran like Grudzielanek or Durham still being available helps this team. Out until May seems to be the worst case scenario and the season doesnt start until the second week of April. So, it comes down to about 3 weeks, which is the amount of time he missed last yr. This isnt reconstruction of the joint thank god. Cause as we saw with Lowell, his reconstruction took place in November and he's still limited. And adding Tex should help offset his loss for a short period of time, but ARod is in a class by himself offensively.

In terms of our in house depth, our MiLB 3b's are at best 1.5-2 yrs away (Laird and Suttle). Our depth outside of 1b in the IF is pretty thin from AAA-AA

Another year of no playoffs. No way the Yankees can make up the loss of Arod unless there is a major injury to other players on the Sox/Rays.

Another quiet October under Cashman's watch.

The Yanks where bound to start slow again anyways. They will most likely be right there at the end of it.

March 5th, and Gom has given up on the 09 campaign. This has to be some sort of record.

According to Abraham no surgery for A-Rod.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman just said Alex Rodriguez has a torn hip labrum and cyst.

They’re trying rest and rehab. The cyst was drained. The hope is he’ll keep playing.

More to come.

He’s out of the WBC.

UPDATE, 3:51 p.m.: Surgery, if needed, would knock him out four months.

The cyst was large and the hope was having it drained will lessen the stiffness Rodriguez felt.

They’re going to cut down on his time in spring training in the hopes he can get through the season.

This is a similar injury to what Mike Lowell and Chase Utley had. Cashman refused to say what degree the tear was.

UPDATE, 4:07 p.m.: Cashman just said A-Rod will need the surgery at some point. The tear won’t just heal.

They’re hoping he can get through the season then have it. So this could be an issue all year.

After seeing how Lowell played last year with this thing, how will A-Rod possibly get through the entire season and maybe playoffs with this?

Kevin Long, the Yankees’ hitting coach, said he knew Rodriguez had a hip problem last June or July. Long noticed subtle changes in Rodriguez’s hitting, notably in his right foot, the back one in his stance.

The foot was not pivoting fully, Long said, and as a result, Rodriguez could not fully turn his waist and clear his hips. This caused his bat to drag and prevented him from driving through the ball and generating maximum power.

Fire Kevin Long.

I guess this explains why he didn't hit more HRs.

Can I have your season tickets?

Ok Gom, now I can see why you said 4 months. I was not aware that it was a torn labrum.

I think Arod has a better chance of healing quicker then Lowell. But now the Yankees will go through the whole season wincing everytime he makes an akward swing/play. Just like the Sox went through with Papi and his wrist last season.

To be honest. that's just wishful thinking on their part, i'd like for someone to explain to me if draining the cyst will remove it permanently of is there a possibility of recurrence.

There are a couple ways to try and go at this.

1. This one if obvious, just get the surgery. 4 months takes him out until the second week of July. But an in season rehab is an easy way to make the injury not heal properly, and it would also take us from being leaders of the pack to fighting for mediocrity for 3 months.

2. Play ARod at third and see what happens. This one will likely lead to him being effective early on and then we'll see him wane to being essentially useless come postseason. But then again, we've lived through that.

3. My favorite option. Have ARod play 3 of every 7 at 3rd and 3 of every 7 at DH. It will guarantee a day off a week, plus 3 days off from the field in games he plays. It would also mean moving Hideki into the OF for 3 games a week, something he might not be capable of doing. This should allow us the leeway to see ARod through the season. But this will come with a serious caveat. We'd need to find a player who is good and who is willing to play 4 of every 7 days. I think that guy is Grudzielanek. While he doesnt have the power of ARod, he does get on base at a reasonable clip (.345 and .346 the last 2 yrs) and he's one tough AB.
