The Red Sox, after losing free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira to the Yankees, still have not taken a significant step to improve their offense. But according to one rival exec, they have shown interest in Adam Dunn.

The extent of the Sox's interest is unclear; they touch base with virtually every top free agent. The addition of Teixeira, an excellent defender, would have justified a move of Kevin Youkilis to third base and trade of Mike Lowell. Dunn would be more of a square peg in a round hole.

The only position open for Dunn would be first; his addition would revive the Sox's need to trade Lowell and compromise them defensively. Then again, the team's offense remains a legitimate concern. Lowell is coming off surgery on his right hip and David Ortiz may be entering his decline phase. Dunn's blend of patience and power would make him a perfect offensive fit.

The Sox could sign Dunn for one year to keep their options open with the A's Matt Holliday, Boras' big prize next offseason. Or, they could sign Dunn to a longer deal, hedge against the possible loss of potential free agent Jason Bay and forget Holliday. The Sox's relationship with Boras, who delivered Teixeira to the Yankees, is currently strained.

After Holliday, the market for hitters next offseason is thin, increasing the appeal of one-year deals for a lingering free agent such as Dunn or Bobby Abreu. Still, Dunn-to-Boston is probably a longshot; the Sox, after adding a catcher, might prefer to stay with their present group, re-assess their offense at midseason and benefit from a possible salary dump on the trade market.

If Dunn can play 1B' date=' then trading Lowell and moving Youk to 3B would be a solid move IMO[/quote']

Except for the fact that Adam Dunn is the Jason Giambi shade of awful at 1B, so downgrading from Youk to him would be compromising the entire IF defense.

If Dunn is better then Kevin Millar at 1B, then i'll take him. Out of all the first basemen I've seen play for the Red Sox so far(not saying much, i guess), Millar was the worst. So basically I think anyone who fields better than him i'll like. I didn't even mind games when Ortiz played.

All for it. Great Big Papi insurance and if he's willing to play a limited non-guaranteed role there's plenty of opportunities to get him playing time. I wish he could play RF though, then it'd be like Hinske.

Dunn at first' date=' Youk at second, Pedroia at SS and Lowell at 3B. Ii lIKE itz![/quote']

You're a f***ing genius dude. Such creativity. :harhar:

I like the move if they can trade Lowell and move Youk to third. It really depends on the cost too.

He can, he played RF last year for the Diamondbacks, although "can" is relative, just as it is with his other positions.

I think you're just mad cuz you cant tell if I'm being sarcastic or not. First, Youk has played 2nd before. Pedroia used to be a SS and Lowell is a 3B and Dunn is a 1b. "Ii lIKE itz!" could be me saying I like it or OR just me being sarcastic with the caps key on. So who's the f***ing genius now????? make sense? :papelbon:

Dunn playing RF in Fenway would cause Boston suicide rates to increase by 5000%.

Doesn't the "can" kinda give away my dislike for his defensive abilities?

Adam Dunn is younger and not in the same decline as David Ortiz....i don't necessarily believe in it (just posing the qustion). David Ortiz could possibly bring back more in a trade. Hard to say unless we had more information on the state of Ortiz's health.

Why do we need to trade Lowell?

Your kind of slow huh? The original article from FoxsSports specified the Red Sox may have interest in Adam Dunn to play 1st base in which case they would move Youkilis to 3rd and trade Mike Lowell.

I'm saying why not consider Adam Dunn coming into Boston and replacing David Ortiz as the DH....don't let him play on the defensive side.

David Ortiz would probably bring back more in a trade than Mike Lowell...hence possibly packaging David Ortiz for a proven catcher which I don't believe Mike Lowell could do....do you follow?

...end result the Red Sox will stick with what they have. Too many moving pieces in either scenario.

And yet still better than Dunn, who can't play 1B at all.

BTW I love Ortiz' one-year decline phase. No thought at all given to the possibility that it might have just been an off year sparked by a freak injury. No, it must be the beginning of the end.
