No one will be the actual Captain(wearing the C) if and when Tek leaves.

Pedroia is the heart of the team at the moment. Give him a couple more years and he could be could very well be considered to wear the C.

Tek did alot to wear the C, something the Sox hasn't let anyone do for a very long time.

You can have a Captain/leader of the team without them wearing the letter.

I'm not crazy about the C on the jersey anyway. You put the C on a player, and all the players see it, all the fans see it, and it's harder to get rid of that player if he gets bad because, hey, he's the captain. With the Red Sox, they didn't get rid of Varitek because of how well he handles the pitching staff, but I don't think the C on the jersey made things any easier.

If they want to make Pedroia the captain at some point, they should make him the unofficial captain, no C's.

As of now, they did get rid of Varitek.

You know as much as I hate to say this I really think this is a rebuilding year.

I really think they are content to play this year with cards they have been dealt.

Not every year is going to be year in which they are going to be in the October hunt. I think they are willing to see what this team brings w/o making any changes at all...IMO

That might very well be Plan B

Ah. In that case' date=' his contract, and except for 2006, his production, kept him here.[/quote']

His contract might have been part of it, but everyone knows it was the way he handled the pitchers that kept him around.

Wouldn't rebuilding be more of trading away pricey players for prospects? This team is definitely going to be in the playoff hunt-maybe not the playoffs' date=' but at least in serious contention.[/quote']

I hope your right.

Not necessarily. It might just be not signing guys who block the prospects you have already. I don't think the Teixeira non-signing fits that category, but I think not signing (or even strongly contesting) Burnett, Lowe, Sheets, etc., matches that approach.

This may be semantics' date=' but to me that's not re-building.[/quote']

I agree, but I think in a well run franchise it might be what "re-building" looks like. With the resources this team has they shouldn't put a team out that wins fewer than 88 games or so. They are simply too talented and too deep.

They sign free agents for position they feel they don't have a solid prospect at. If they thought Brandon Moss or David Murphy were ready to be everyday players, they wouldn't have signed Drew.

When they let Loretta go to give the job to Pedroia, I don't think they were planning on having a production drop-off at second base.

They didn't empty their pockets on Teixeira cause I'm sure they feel like Lars will be ready for 2010.

Except that they did put a best offer out there for Teixeira that was pretty good money, so your analogy breaks down there. They didn't break the bank for him as a desperation signing but they definitely wanted Teixeira if he wanted to come here.

*I* didn't want Teixeira in the interest of being faithful to the Sox' paradigm, but Theo saw a need to explore breaking his own rules and in the final analysis that's OK. Any plan, slavishly and inflexibly adhered to, is a bad plan..

Are you really Mike Lowell? It would make so much sense:lol:

What? it's true. In the final analysis I didn't think Teixeira would be worth it for the Red Sox. Not because of what he was or wasn't but because of how I see the state of the team.

It's not like we haven't gone over this territory before.

LOL I know we been over it. I was just offering my theory as to why you didn't want him in the first place:lol:

Let's just say the Teixeira argument was definitely one debate I wouldn't have minded losing anyway. Half of that debate was just me being too stone cold bored to give up a potential source of entertainment.

LOL

That and the fact your really Mike Lowell and didn't want to be traded:thumbsup:

That, too. I think Lowell brings a lot of intangibles to the team as long as he can be productive at the plate and in the field.

I still think the team screwed up by not resting Lowell as soon as they realized he had a problem. I laud Mike's reputation as a gamer but that was one time that he really needed to focus on getting helathy.

If they'd rested him and gotten him the treatment he needed in July, it's possible the injury would A) not have been as severe in the first place or B) been treated and recovered in time for September, or even in the worst case, C) given the FO time to find a better alternate at first base than Kotsay. ( a deadline deal for your beloved Teixeira for example)

The key combination for B) really needs to be changed pronto.

you mean that roll they promised him

twice they wouldn't change

Colon probably would be displeased if the Red Sox denied Colon the roll they promised him.
