Yeah, seriously people are s***ing themselves for no reason. Last time I checked we still have a team that had 95 wins last year, with a bunch of people underperforming and also names like Teixera and Lowe are still available.

I'm with you Manny. Too many members here have reached panic mode.

"Epstein is an idiot. What's he waiting for?!"

"Teixeira NEEDS to sign today or else we're done for!"

Seriously, people. It's a long off season. Have a little patience. And the fact that some fans want Epstein's head to roll right now is sort of f***ed up. He's given you 2 World Series in 5 years after an 86 year drought.

i don't know if all that many players "underperformed" last year. i think papi is what he is now. ellsbury may never really pan out. tek is done.

most players actually seemed to overperform last year. did anyone actually think pedroia was an mvp candidate at the start of last year or that lester would have a monster season?

the only player who could probably turn things around would be beckett, but that's only if he can start to locate his offspeed pitches again.

Maybe having Lowell healthy last year could have made a difference? Drew?

Why is Ortiz "what he is now"...maybe it's a good idea to see how his wrist responds to rest and rehab before making that claim?

Why can we sweep the ones who struggled under the rug and only call attention to those who "overperformed"?

I think it's fair to expect this team to be close to the same next season (better if they land Tex). Having a healthy Drew, Lowell, Ortiz, and Beckett will counter any regressions from Pedroia, Youkilis, and Lester.

hey guys, new members form south florida

agreed with all of you... no reason to freak out yet... did the yankees get better? yes, but let's wait and see if burnett can have a single season of being healthy, lol

For the sake of every yankee fan around here who talks like he has magically found a fountain of health, he better friggin' be healthy.

IMHO' date=' Theo doesn't [i']have[/i] to do a thing. The Yankees aren't that much better. The Rays can be dealt with.

Yes he does, and that is solving the C situation, but there is more than enough time for that.

not really. If Varitek gets someone to bite on a 3 yr deal, he's gone. And then you'll have to fork over some serious prospects in order to land Salty or Teagarden. And I dont see Theo paying more than the worth coming back when the player returing to Boston is not even close to a proven commodity.

I agree that he'll be gone at 3 years, but I feel bad for the team that signs him for 10m at 3years.

I think not being able to land Tek would mean they would push that much harder to land Teixeira and be satisfied with a decent defensive catcher who can hit .220 (Tek's AVG last year).

I don't think this is the end of the world, but I think that if by the end of the season the Sox have signed Teixeira, and either re-signed Tek or traded for Saltygarden they will have had a good offseason. Even better they could add Smoltz on a decent contract and give themselves some pitching depth moving forward.

What changed? They were the second best team in MLB last year according to RS/RA, and they should have some healthier players back (we hope).

Teixeira would have been a benefit, but they still have a great team.

I fail to see inconsistencies in my message - sure, these guys COULD rebound and provide for a successful season but they had the ability to land the best hitter available and all it would cost them is money instead of the young talent they so covet.

If they're going to invest heavily in the draft route, I need an explanation as to why a guy like Meyer wasn't signed this year. I'd like to see some consistency in their strategy. They preach payroll flexibility, but then don't flex any financial muscle. They've dropped what, $50 million off payroll this season? Where is that money going?

There's plenty of time left. Losing out on Teixeira when he was clearly identified as the team's main goal, and seeing all of their time an energy wasted leaves me less optimistic than I was 10 days ago.

They have time. Like I've said all along, Theo better have a heck of a Plan B because right now we're the third best team in the division.

You make it sound like the Sox are the only ones with any agency here. Meyer didn't sign because he didn't want to sign, not because the Sox decided to randomly waste a draft pick. Same with Teixeira.

You sure? I thought they just wanted to waste a draft pick so they could be off their message a bit more while fooling us into thinking they were going in the right direction.

Teixeira is a Yankee because they paid him and gave him what he wanted, including being able to wear those crummy pinstriped uniforms.

If he didn't want to sign, why was he drafted? If they chose him, they had to think they had a chance of signing him. If they didn't think they could sign him and drafted him anyway, then yes, it was a wasted pick.

I can't buy any message of poverty they sell me. Sorry. Not anymore.

He was drafted in the later rounds because if he did, improbably, sign it would have been a great pick. It was a calculated risk and just because it didn't net them a great pitching prospect doesn't mean the draft pick was a bad idea.
Posted
Did their drafting him prevent him from being picked randomly by any other teams that might pay 3 million for him? Are late round picks that prevent other teams from signing a guy, and which would likely be used on a player who stays in the minors for his career (if that) valuable if only to prevent other teams from drafting him? I'm mostly curious, not trying to prove a point.

every team had their shot with him. But they had to know what it would likely take to sign him and if they didnt think it was worth it, then whats the point of drafting him. Other than that, I do not understand the question.

That being said, most teams draft 3-4 signability cases past the 10th round thinking that they are gonna nab one or two. Ours was Lassiter in 08.
