Exactly. Although he could give that production for the forseeable future. Not many would say Mussina himself could replicate those results.

That's the thing, right now, they are maybe a win better than last year. Improvement will have to come from current roster players or other acquisitions.

Sabathia's agents must have channeled Boras during the negotiations. They basically got the Yanks to bid against themselves. No one was going to come close to 140M. Now they are paying 160M. Way to show some back bone Cashman.

Sabathia and his agents really bent Cashman over and aimed for penitration on this one. And Cashman still had to go to SF and convince CC's wife....

I hear Sabathia's first order of business in NY will be to get the exact address for Original Ray's' date=' Famous Ray's, Original Famous Ray's and Famous Original Ray's[/quote']

Very well played.

Once again Theo outclassed by Cashman. Counter punch coming? My guess is no Redsox are in deep trouble.

You're name is quite appropriate....even in this forum you're a "weak hitter"...however, was the name choice really a reference to your lack of success in the bedroom? Perhaps Mr. Softy would be more appropriate?

As for the deal itself, it reeks of desperation on the Yankees end, but I have to say he's the guy to overpay for in this FA class.

Outbidding your closest competitor by $60 million (known offers, my guess is someone would have come in around $115-120 million, making the difference about $40 million) just shows how much they needed the deal.

I think if CC can give them Mussina type production over the course of the contract, it will be worth it for them. Terrible 2007 aside, Mike Mussina was a great pitcher for the Yankees for the duration of his contract, and was very durable.

He's the guy to sign, but I can't be thriled about the length or the money if I'm a Yankee fan.

For reference, these are the $100+ million pitchers in MLB history:

Kevin Brown (Bust)

Mike Hampton (Bust)

Barry Zito (Bust)

Johan Santana (Year 2 of 6 year deal, jury out)

Three pitchers? Biggest sample size ever.

You forgot Dice-K.

Nice try at an insult window licker. You don't even know the team beyond Epstein being named GM.

Per Mike and Mike' date=' its 7 years/$160 million![/quote']

Well, if the Yankees go on to win in the next few seasons at least they will completely collapse after that. The Red Sox have learned that internalization is the way to win and to win consistently, the Yankees haven't.

I think we're getting closer to a salary cap.

I would if I had it, The Netherlands isn't to big on ESPN<_>

I am surprised he didn't wait to accept before talking to SF. They must not have ebeen able to put anything together worth while.

How exactly do you know he didn't talk to SF?

Congrats Yankees fans on getting an actual ace for your team. Now lets see where Bunett and Lowe end up

Hopefully somewhere else. Jon Heyman said on WFAN this morning that the yanks were close on a 4 year, $66 mil deal with Lowe. There's all the Burnett talk going around. Frankly I let them both go elsewhere for that kind of bread. Re-sign Andy and bring in Sheets and we're good to go, IMO.

And yes, I am happy that we got Sabathia, despite my rants yesterday. I am still a bit concerned though due to his lack of postseason success, and his weight. We will have to endure a few bad years of this 7 year contract, that's inevitable, but hopefully we have more good years than bad with him. It's going to be awfully painful to see a 35 year old overweight pitcher making $23 Mil struggling in the final year of his contract. Hopefully we have 28 or 29 Championships by then though. That would make it much more tolerable.

 lmao ...maybe it isn't such a good thing the new Yankee Stadium will feature a big steakhouse NYY Steaks or whatever it's called. I hope he doesn't like Italian food, because whatever happens we'll have to keep him away from Arthur Avenue while in the Bronx. After games we need to make sure he gets his ass on the Deegan and heads straight to Westchester or wherever he's gonna live. What we should do is make his fat ass walk to and from the Stadium everyday.

Rotation setting up like this so far

C.C. Sabathia

Joba Chamberlain

Chien-Ming Wang

Phillip Hughes

Ian Kennedy

How dare you insert Kennedy over Aceves or Giese or Sanchez (I think the plan is to keep him in the pen though if I'm not mistaken)! But I think it turns out to be something more along the lines of this;

Sabathia

Wang

Joba

Andy

Sheets/Lowe/Burnett/Hughes

..I'll take that

I agree 100%

DiceK's contract is not for over $100 million.

Yeah but lets add the posting fee to the contract and see what we come up with ;)

I've heard speculation on another board he can opt out after two years, is this true??

If there is an opt-out clause, which very well may be true, I'm doubtful it would come before year 3 or 4 of the contract. If he can opt-out after 2 years then we did a terrible job negotiating this contract. He already got an extra year and an extra $20 Mil. He's played us like a piano this entire offseason.

The deal, according to a source close to negotiations, gives Sabathia the right to opt out of the contract after the first three years of the contract, by which time he will have been paid $69 million. Sabathia had insisted on the clause to satisfy concerns he had about playing in New York.

Wow. That's very interesting.

Because the story I read last night was that he was supposed to meet with SF at the End of the week to discuss an offer.

You would figure if they did meet someone would have reported it somewhere. So since there isn't anything anywhere about them meeting, I just assumed they hadn't(unless SF had no interest from the get go).

I was saying thats how it was set up so far (not including any other potential signings). But yea I had forgotten about Aceves' good debut at the end of the season

Rician blast...Jim Rice was my farite player when I was growing up. I remember watching a game and he ripped on off the back wall in CF and the announcer referred to it as " a Rician blast" this the name.

Guess I hit a nerve with BOY, eh? Truth hurts, I guess.

10:14am: Tim Brown and Gordon Edes of Yahoo report that the deal is for $161MM over seven years (which would top Johan's average annual value).

The deal has an opt-out clause after the first three years, which are worth $69MM. The 31 year-old Sabathia will make his opt-out decision after the 2011 season with four years, $92MM remaining on the deal. He would have to buck the opt-out trend (or renegotiate) to make this more than a three-year, $69MM deal for the Yankees

Wow, so the Yanks are only guranteed 3 years. The dreaded opt out. I can't believe Cashman gave him this. These do nothing for the organization. If he comes in and pitches well, he can hit the market again for more $. Or if he's oft injured or breaks down and sucks he can still pass on the opt out and be one of the highest paid pitchers.
