there were some other throw ins:

The New York Yankees announced today that they have acquired switch-hitting first baseman/outfielder Nick Swisher and right-handed pitcher Kanekoa Texeira from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for infielder Wilson Betemit and right-handed pitchers Jeff Marquez and Jhonny Nunez.

Never can quite get over the Yankees' ability to acquire useful players for nothing nobody never-was trash that they do not themselves want.

This is POPPIN!

When it was rumored thatthe White Sox might be shopping him I immediately liked the idea of the Yankees getting involved, although I thought it was a longshot. I like Betemit, but this is definitly a great trade. I suspect he plays first and we dont get in on Tex, but his versatility allowing him to play the outfield is a plus. Aside from that, I think his personality and off-field characteristics are a nice addition to for the Yankees. I like this move a lot.

Eh, Swisher is strictly bench material.

Sour grapes
Uh, no.

I live in Chicago, I'm a White Sox fan and I saw him play this year. He wouldn't have been a starter this year if Jerry Owens hadn't pulled a hamstring the last week of spring training.

Wow, nice move by Cahman.

Swisher is an extremely useful ballplayer to say the least.

First base is his best position defensively. Then LF/RF. Only put him in CF in an emergency (i.e. your starting CF goes down with an injury and he's just keepin' the spot warm until the AAA callup gets there).

Not even close.

Aaaargh.

There's a reason why Palehosed.com has a "Dirty .230" (he actually finished the season sub-.230) tag for him.

I would have liked the Sox to get him for the bench. But if the Yanks decided on him at 1B over Tex I'll take that. It looks like the Yanks will be throwing all their money at pitching.

Yes. He may be DH as well, it is hard to know. Replacing Giambi with Swisher is a wash, in my opinion. If Swisher placates the Yankee fans' sense of needing to add a bat, then great, perhaps their FO will move on to trying to acquire Sabathia or Burnett.

Yup they committed $26.75 millions for a bench player, righttt.

Owens and his career OPS of .633 was going to be the starting CF.

I wouldn't say that the two are exclusive. Giambi and Abreu could both very well be gone, leaving an OF of Damon/Swisher/Nady, Matsui at DH and Tex at 1B. Swish played plenty of CF over the past two years.

I think it was a great move, actually, and the stats tell me he had a horrendous FLUKE season, even though his stats weren't even all that bad.

1).251 BABIP, which is way below his career and the major league average.

2)20.9 Line Drive%, which means he was hitting the ball hard, but straight at somebody.

Yet still finished with respectable numbers accross the board except for BA, which is essentially a useless stat anyways.

And let's check out Bill James' projection for his 2009 stat line:

.240/354/451, and that's taking into account his lousy year.

If you ask me, the yankees probably pulled some highway robbery on this one.

Don't get me wrong, i hate the Yanks, but i'll be the first to admit that this was a great move by Cashman.

In terms of acquiring Swisher, there are a few things to consider

1. Swisher is the perfect buy low opportunity. He's a career .805 OPS guy who is coming off an abysmal yr after putting up 2 solid mid .800OPS yrs.

2. He adds power back to a team that has sorely lacked it. He's a .451 career SLG guy who will likely experience a surge in power once he moves to lefty friendly yankee stadium.

3. His versatility will help a ton. He could tag team with Damon and a couple of the rookies to lock down CF. He could be the everyday 1b. He could switch off with Nady at both 1b and RF. And he can also play LF if needed.

4. He's 27 and has already hit 104 homers. If you consider that he is entering his prime, you should expect him to improve significantly

5. He's signed for the next 3 yrs at 21mil with a 10.5 mil option for yr 4. Hence, for a versatile, switch hitting power hitter, we have him locked up pretty cheap through his early prime yrs.

AND THE BEST OF ALL....

We got him for our utility IFer who lost his job to Cody Ransom, a minor league pitcher who looks more and more like a long man, and another reliever who has bounced around between WAS, NYY and now CWS. To be honest with you, I think Nunez will be the best player of the bunch when its all said and done.

This is a solid move. It doesnt rule us out for anyone, but covers us at one of the two positions of need.

Yeah I pretty much agree. If you want to go get Teixeira too, you can, and stick Swisher in CF. If not, Swisher can play 1B and you can play Gardner/Melky/someone else at CF.

Mike Cameron will probably become a yankee too.......

Cashman stated Swisher will be the starting 1B.

Damon LF, Gardner/Melky CF, and Nady RF.

It already gives them option for their 2010 OF, when Damon/Matsui/Nady become FAs.

Great deal.

They would have to make a trade. I wouldn't expect it.

I don't think they'd have to give up much......

And he'd be a short-term solution, which is exactly what they need.

Exactly. Cashman's added a solid player who wont be expected to be an overwhelmingly significant addittion, but can sufficiently fill one of two possible needs although at this point it seems more than likely he's gonna man first, which might be good. It means we don't have to go out and commit $150 to a guy like Texiera. We don't need that kind of committment both financially, and long term. Especially considering the contracts we're gonna throw around in the pitching market. We can only have so many long-term, big dollar players, I see giving a contract like that to Tex is comparable to what we did with Giambi. We gave him a huge contract billed on hype, and eventually as the years passed his presence, especially financially became a burdon. Like Giambi at the time, Tex is a real good, solid player. But he's boderline great at best, and I have a hard time even saying that.

If we can fill our offensive position player needs with quality players to add to the great offensive core we have, we can get by especially with the vast improvements set to be made to the pitching staff. I think the offense is gonna be fine, despite the few question marks. I think Cano is definately gonna be better, the two guys filling the left side of our infield aren't going to be a concern whatsoever, Posada will hopefully be himself coming off the surgery; but with expectations of possible slight downfall, and I think our corner outfield is the only little question mark, but hopefully as I suspect Nady will do a nice job this year and even more hopefully Damon and/or Matsui (depending on if both of them are even here) can be serviceable. And there's still more to be done, we can't 100% rule out any of the possiblities on the free agent market including; Abreu, Tex (despite my feelings), Griffey, Manny, Cameron, Giambi, etc. to name a few. It's gonna be real interesting as a Yankee fan to watch this offseason go down, and I like the start we've gotten off to.

We shall see. Melky and Marquez was the rumored package for Cameron, so that will have to be changed. I have a feeling that it gets done. We could use a veteran CF presence that can bridge the gap until Gardner or Jackson are ready. And, if we add Cameron, we'd have one hell of a balanced offense. If we can get Matsui and Posada to stay healthy, this lineup is nasty.

1. Damon- CF- capable of hitting .300+ with a .370+OBP and 10-15HR

2. Jeter-SS- capable of hitting .300+ with a .370+OBP and 10-15HR

3. Swisher-1B- capable of hitting .250+ with a .370OBP+ and 25-30HR

4. Rodriguez-3B- capable of hitting .300+ with a .400+OBP and 35-40HR

5. Matsui- DH- capable of hitting .300+ with a .370+OBP and 20+HR

6. Nady-RF- capable of hitting .280+ with a .350OBP and 20+HR

7. Posada-C- capable of hitting .270+ with a .370+OBP and 20+HR

8. Cano-2B- capable of hitting .300+ with a .340OBP and 15+HR

9. Cameron- CF- capable of hitting .240+ with a .330+OBP and 20+HR

Thats balance. 4 righties, 3 lefties, 2 switch hitters, all capable of hitting for power, most capable of hitting for average, and most capable of grinding pitchers. We just need them to stay healthy.

Swisher batting 3rd is a no-no.

Matsui's a much better candidate to hit third than Swisher, since he's a complimentary piece in that lineup.
