“As far as any lingering effects from the injury, he just needs rest,” said Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein. “The No. 1 prescription for a torn oblique is six weeks of rest. We just couldn’t afford that at the time. He just needs to rest and have himself a good offseason, (and do) what he always does and build up his shoulder strength for the coming season.”

And, besides the altered tempo of Beckett’s offseason, the result of the Red Sox’ fate offered another education. For the first time in his professional baseball career, the pitcher was forced to leave a season burdened with a different kind of motivation.

Well, on the plus side, he'll need to work his butt off in the offseason and report next year healthy to prove he can stay that way so we shouldn't have photos of Beckett with a roll of fat hanging out of the shirt.

regardless of how bad he was in the postseason, pitching with a torn oblique takes some serious f***ing balls

his ALCS Game 6 performance is up there with Schilling in my book

Josh Beckett said he struggled to put his shirt on before his Game 6 start against the Rays and would have needed another cortisone shot to pitch in the World Series had the Red Sox advanced.

Beckett, who was pitching through an oblique tear, allowed two runs over five innings to win Game 6. "The one thing I know," he said, "is if I could have gotten the last three innings of that game I can get through anything." Beckett will probably be recovered from his oblique injury in 6-8 weeks.

Absolutely ridiculous.

I'm glad he pitched through it, tried his absolute hardest, and made no excuses if he didn't pitch well.

The guy has balls, and is a warrior.

Get healthy, get back to mowing people down next year.

Torn Oblique, and still threw 93MPH... wow.......

This is the type of mentality you want leading your pitching staff....

Dude is a stud, please extend him this offseason Theo:D

This is right alongside Schilling in 2004 but the sad thing is because this wasn't as visually dramatic and because the Sox lost, this will probably be forgotten soon enough.

Guess I was totally off in my analysis that his oblique was still bothering him against Tampa and that his pitches weren't where they should be.

All this without anyting fancier than my knowledge of baseball and my own two eyes. No pitch f/x or spreadsheets. Just little ole' me.

I can't believe I missed that. Wow...

Are you really patting yourself on the back for that?

(insert famous blind person here) could have seen there was something obviously wrong with Beckett....<_>

Funny how a lot of the same people who said I didn't know what I was talking about in saying he wasn't finishing his pitches because his oblique was still bothering him are now claiming that I was "Master of the Obvious".

I am destined to spend my life in the company of lesser intellects.

And in that game against the Angels, Beckett's bad start basically amounted to a tale of two bad pitches, both to Mike Napoli.
