Hmmm this could be intriguing. This sounds like a Sox move. Get a top SP cheap because of injury risk. I really can't see why LA wouldn't exercise that option tho. 8.75M is nothing for a possible top of the rotation starter. Of course they could be clearing the books if they are going to try and sign Manny.

Because of the shoulder injury, he might last a little while over the winter. I'd see how things go with Peavy (or Sabathia/Burnett... sigh...) before making this move.

Yeah, I'd like him as a bottom of the rotation guy. Might be pricy for that kind of a slot though. In LA, he posted a 1.37 and 1.30 WHIP in his last 2 full seasons, and was awful in the time that he pitched in 2008. He's definitely interesting though.

Penny will get paid. Someone will scout him out, give him a physical, and pay him Suppan money on a short year deal. Us? Possibly. A lot of other teams would look at him too as a middle of the rotation piece.

It is a big risk for a small market team....it is not a risk for the Red Sox who have great depth should it not work out. I'd look into it.

Take a look. Offer a one year contract for 10 mil, with a second year option. Then if he approaches say 160 innings, have the second automatically kick in for a simliar salary.
